I've reserved judgement for a few days but have had time to conclude the new layout is a disaster. The junction is much worse for those on bicycles. It will be criminal if any cycling budget has been spent on this work as the only way it will benefit safety is by discouraging anyone from getting on a bike. Cars turning right from Townley Road can now just start turning much earlier. Riding the other way you have no idea which path any vehicle will take, the new layout definitely encourages the first car to race across to beat oncoming traffic. Advanced cycle lights might improve this for those waiting at the lights when they change, but does nothing for those who arrive when the lights are green. Really unbelievable.
