Hi Johnie. X refers to a crystal. It determines the frequency that the circuit resonates at so that it only operates the appropriate receiver. Without further investigation I would guess it has a frequency of 57.768MHz which are the numbers on the can. Hope it helps.

6:07, 6:33 or 7:05 all take about 65 minutes to Parkway station via Blackfriars from Denmark Hill which I believe is about a 10 minute coach link from there to the airport terminal. I've been thro' there many a time on the way to Bedford but never actually got off for the airport. It depends on where you are going as to how long before your flight you need to be there. There is a 5:07 getting there at 6:30 if you need the full 3 hours hours for some international flights. Check to make sure they are running in the morning at http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/service/timesandfares/DMK/LTN/tomorrow/0745/arr#outwardJump

Thameslink from Denmark Hill to Luton Airport parkway. May need to change at Blackfriars depending on the time.

Police had stopped a car outside The Lordship last night about 9:30 and an officer was walking up and down the bit outside the launderette. Maybe connected?

I've lived in East Dulwich all my life which is somewhat over 60 years. It has never been West Peckham unless you are maybe using Estate Agent gobbledegook. ED wasn't a gentrified place for the next half century or more. Maybe Peckham was more desirable in the days of the likes of Jones and Higgins where I used to have a Saturday job in the 60's but that era didn't last long. It is only in recent years that Peckham is spectacularly rising again in desirability.

I agree with Sue that price is not the only thing to look at. A balance between service and cost is needed. I love the "singing website" reference singalato. What a massive difference in quotes and so high. What on earth is going on there?

Hi Mary123, Glad that you are sorted with the car insurance. Same apples for house and fuel I'm afraid. We all need to look around for the best deal.
-
I went with QuotemeHappy which is the online version of Aviva. All done online unless you need to make a claim which I quite like. I used to be with Elephant. I also found the same problem with house insurance. My mother had been with Saga for several years having been wooed by a very good rate of about ?250 a year for full cover house contents and property. A few years later it had reached ?750 a year for the same cover with no claims having been made. When I contacted them they couldn't explain why it had got so much but they would also not reduce it. I took out a new policy in my name, since I also live in the house as a carer, with Prudential (a well respected company I think) for their fullest cover for ?200 per year. It also meant I was a new policy holder so no discount applied which makes it even better as a deal. Shame on Saga and their treatment of old people.

Hi Mary123, I live in SE22 and I bought a newish car last year. My Insurance company of 15 years put my premium up by more than 60%. Upon renewal I did an online search as advised and got full comp, protected no claims and legal cover (so not a slimmed down policy) for less than half my old company's quote. I have literally just renewed it since it is now 10% lower than last year. I did fear that it would be hiked upon renewal and also due to the government's increase in insurance tax so was pleased with the drop. It really pays to shop around and not stay with an old company at renewal. They have no customer loyalty so neither should you. Good luck with your search.

V1 & V2 Bombs dropped on Lordship Lane.

There is a large article about the stretchers in the Mail online today. It talks about all of the London estates that used them but it appears that the first to have them removed entirely was the Dog Kennel Hill estate. This seems to have motivated opposition but may be too late for DKH railings. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4794898/Campaign-save-London-s-stretcher-fences-used-Blitz.html -
You could try the Dulwich Constitutional Club on East Dulwich Grove about 100 metres up from the Bishop. Hall, bar and large garden. Lovely spot in the summer. http://www.dulwichclub.co.uk/

I think someone is having a Diane Abbott moment. A council spokesperson (not sure if it is Cllr Fiona Colley at the top of the article) said "For instance we will save ?28,000 per year by moving to paperless committees ? this saving alone means that the replacement programme will pay for itself within two years. The change will bring Southwark in line with the majority of London boroughs where some staff and cabinet members are issued with smart phones and tablets as standard.? How can a saving of ?28k a year (if true) pay off a cost of over ?700k in 2 years. My maths make it ?56k. Less than a 10th of the costs. As Penguin68 says, there are many cheaper options available. Are they allowed to use these devices for personal use? It seems the gravy train just rolls on and on. Thank you James for bringing this issue to light.

Conway Road Works at Junction of Wood Vale and FH Road
bargee99 replied to Penguin68's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi slarti b, They did a similar thing in Landcroft road a few weeks ago. Signposted all the lampposts and put out cones for a week of pavement repairs. Cars all duly moved and come the day they turned up and lo and behold they had posted the wrong section of the road. Of course the section of road they wanted to do was still full of cars. You could not make it up if you tried. -
The Waterboys, a mobile phone and Alexa. A weird story?
bargee99 replied to Alan Medic's topic in The Lounge
The Waterboys "Whole of the moon" is one of my all time favourites. I would definitely put it on my funeral list of songs. Pity I won't be able to hear it then. -
Burst Water Main Ulverscroft road
bargee99 replied to DulwichFox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Conways put out cones and posters on lamp posts and cars in our road last weekend. They informed car owners that there was no parking on one side of the road all week while the footpath was being repaired. Having all moved our cars accordingly we found out on Monday morning that they had posted the wrong part of the road and that we could all go back to normal. You simply couldn't make up the incompetence of this company and their council clients. -
Hi edhistory, Surely such banners should be sponsored by the local businesses that they are designed to help with trade. They are not going to be there to simply say to people North Cross road is a lovely street are they. I really am becoming a grumpy old man in the face of such waste.

Camberwell Grove bridge closed for at least 6 months
bargee99 replied to gm99's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The ?1m is the cost to make it safe for large vehicles. For cars from the council website "the cost to the Council for this option is approximately ?17,000 plus the costs for any works above the bridge to ensure the 3.0 tonne limit is not exceeded (such 'above' works would be required for either maintaining the status quo permanently or to manage a 3.0 tonne limit. The costs to strengthen the bridge to 7.5 tonnes or more is in excess of ?1m." I make that 4 or 5 bike hangers :-) -
Hi Robin, Dexit. I like it. Let's sign up Wolfie Smith. Wolfie's revolutionary Tooting Popular Front can't touch East Dulwich or is that Goose Green? As you say. Yuuk.

Hi James, It was the comments about Grenfell Tower by Corbyn and McDonnell that made me revisit this thread. As you point out the changes to fire measures were started in 2005 under a large majority Labour Government now conveniently forgotten. Again I agree with you that an expenditure of ?72,000 per flat is a large expenditure and hardly scrimping. The terrible results are possibly caused by mismanagement or simply by incompetence but most definitely not austerity. The behaviour of K & C council now is simply beyond belief. Back to the topic of local budgets. Many of us think that the cost of the bike hangers is simply too high. ?50,000 to hang up 60 bikes in the street! As a sole carer for a 94 year old parent I simply want her to be able to walk on the pavements safely. Come on mate, to suggest that these bikes will make any difference to the wear and tear of the roads is a stretch by anyone?s imagination. I feel your pain about local budgets and their restrictions. I worked for 40 years in Medical Research in a London University before retiring a few years ago. Many years back we wanted to purchase an expensive piece of equipment. We offered to manage our budget for a couple of years to be able to afford it the same as any good household would. We were told very firmly that was not an option and if we underspent this year our budget the following year would be cut because we obviously didn?t need it all. For the equipment we needed we would have to apply for a special grant and hope for the best. The spend it or lose it policy still seems dominant in all walks of public finance even now. How can that encourage responsible spending? Surely this needs a massive shakeup? About 10 or 12 years ago, time gets a bit distorted once you retire, the University decided that all departments needed a business manager. The business manager then decided they needed an accounts manager. The accounts manager decided they needed a grant manager. Most higher echelons of promotion in the public sector require a person to be managing other people as part of the job description. Hence the creation of this pyramid scheme of employing people. This I also believe to be endemic to all walks of the public sector. Maybe this explains my cynicism of public services actually being run for the benefit of the public and not the staff. Not much encouragement either when the very top staff of universities, health services, government departments, MP?s and councils all seem to have found the money tree for pay rises of 20% or more over recent years.
-
I am reluctant to get drawn back into this debate having expressed my opinion before. However, Jeremy Corbyn in today's PMQ's blames all of the recent tragedies on cuts to council grants. When we see such a gross waste of public money as these kind of schemes, when there are many more urgent priorities, simply because they are councillor's pet projects makes me mad. Council oversight of all building projects around the area have been complained about on this forum forever. Do we actually think more money would make them do their jobs any better or simply waste even more?

Phantom automatic public convenience - Lordship Lane
bargee99 replied to edhistory's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I'm sure April 1st may be relevant. If it is, who thinks that it's amusing. How easy can it be to register a non existent building. Surely, something wrong with the procedure if it can be done simply for fun. -
Phantom automatic public convenience - Lordship Lane
bargee99 replied to edhistory's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Edhistory, how on earth did you find that! Non existent but certainly a good idea that we have asked for before on other threads. -
Thanks Admin. I thought it heartless to simply refer to the problems about travel without recognising the horrific event. The reason for the detail was that the National rail website showed very confusing information this afternoon. At least people are now aware of the problems and to check regularly and that London Bridge will not be a walking option for most of the morning rush hour.
-
If you go the National Rail website it will show no disruptions to current services and shows the trains running in the morning. Please make sure that you open the message at the top of the page " no trains calling at London Bridge" and view "more details" to see the actual state of play in the morning.
