interesting read. We're thinking about the same things for our kids in primary school as well. One thing I don't understand about Charter ED is whether they stream / set kids based on ability. I got the impression from an open evening that it is done a little as possible. All i could find on-line was this undated letter - https://www.chartereastdulwich.org.uk/_site/data/files/users/18/documents/9473A8A3547CCCD39DBC4A55CA1678DC.pdf?pid=167 For the most part, we believe in mixed ability teaching and do not stream in Year 7 or Year 8. The only exceptions to this are that we have a small nurture class for Maths. This is a provision for students who scored lower than 85 in their SATS exams and is designed to support them to acquire the skills to access the learning in mainstream class. We do not have nurture classes for any other subjects. We take a more streamed - though not a setted - approach in Maths and Science from Year 9 onwards. though unsure if this is still accurate reflection of policy, and unsure of difference between streaming and setting.

Secondary school catchment barry road

my contribution on this topic, covering similar stuff as scarlett - -
thanks all for highlighting need to register our feedback. I registered my view that partial privatisation of the park for 25 days of summer is not a good thing. And listed back at southwark the benefits they claim from park usage, which they are intending to restrict. https://moderngov.southwark.gov.uk/documents/s51656/Public%20Health%20presentation%20-%20parks%20open%20spaces.pdf

In. I played in (and won) the Camden market [fun, not the serious] tournament once FWIW. I also have a 9yo who would potentially be interested in playing

According to Charter ED's website today furthest distance offered was 1400m https://www.chartereastdulwich.org.uk/page/?title=Do+we+have+a+catchment%3F&pid=200 However, Google's cached preview states 1300m, so guess this must have updated to 1400m recently, and that the school publishes distances rounded to nearest 100m.

Interesting... Thanks for posting. Has anyone tried writing to councillors on this topic? Effective/ineffective way of getting voices heard? -

Rye Lane buses again: Consultation open on one way option

Nice one ianj for posting this. Everyone please fill it in if you want to avoid East Dulwich becoming even more of a transport black spot! I understand that lower usage and fare revenue may sadly mean some bus services will be pared back, but this proposal is voluntary, unnecessary, and would be self inflicted Not having buses running from what is by far the areas most useful station is ridiculous. -
Seeking after school / part time help with 2 children
McMurphy replied to McMurphy's topic in Nanny & Childcare Services
Hello - still looking! Please get in touch if you are interested - we have a good amount of flexibility in days / times -
We are looking for a friendly and organised person to look after our 9yr old son and 6.5yr old daughter after school 2-4 days per week from September. We do have some flexibility in days / times / hours- so please get in touch if you are interested and we can work out what suits everyone. About us: We are an active and friendly family living in East Dulwich. My husband works full time - long hours (mostly in the office, 1-2 days at home), and I am returning to study full time. We actually have 3 children, but the youngest (2yr old boy) will be at nursery. At home the kids like reading, drawing & colouring, lego, imaginative play, playing in the garden, watching telly (obviously!), and playing computer games. About the job: We are hoping to find someone who is happy to do the following: * Collect them from school (approx 10mins walk from our house) * Generally either take them home (could be via the park!) or to their after school activities. They do one joint activity (same day/place), and currently have one other activity each (on different days!). * Prepare and provide them with snacks & evening meal. * Encourage them with any homework. It's fairly light - usually just some mathletics/spellings which they can do themselves, they just need prompting to get on with it! * Help them to tidy up after the above activities. Finally to note is that I may sometimes be around at the house, and could also have the 2yr old with me. So we'd need someone who is happy to work around us a bit!

Extinction Rebellion to camp on Peckham Rye park for 2 weeks
McMurphy replied to MrsR's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I suspect they didn't leave anything behind because they're fundamentally decent and unselfish people who care about the environment and hence wouldn't leave waste. Somehow doubt they would take all of their camp with them on holiday. Hammerman - Please provide link to press story about XR protester jetting off around the world on regular holidays abroad. Note regular does not mean frequent. -
many mornings recently we have had, on our very visible garden fence facing the dining table, a pair of woodpigeons engaged in what I can only describe as "heavy petting", followed by what appears to be intercourse. we have young children and frankly I don't know what to do about this. we've resorted to eating our breakfast in the sitting room, away from this daily display, and to avoid the questions I inevitably have to field from the children on the topic. I tried explaining to them that the male pigeon wanted to be a bit higher up to get a better view, but they just pointed out that he could fly up the tree next to him, for which I had no answer. we've now resorted to only using our kitchen when it's dark, as that's the only time we can be sure we won't be forced to witness such a spectacle, which is obviously particularly distressing during family mealtimes. does anyone have any advice as to what can be done about this? I am looking into installing an electric fence atop our wooden fence, but failing that, I fear we shall have to leave the area for somewhere less likely to make my family bear daily witness to such obscenities.

good knowledge Nigello... do I take that to mean that, whilst I await the arrival of the sparrowhawk, I can lawfully kill the parakeets that eat all the bird food in my garden (see attached of 5 parakeets this morning dominating the feeder at the expense of the smaller native birds)

thanks for the update scarletbanks are you able to settle the debate about whether this 897m was the furthest distance offered in the initial offering (in march), or the final offering, after all the movement always occurs (so presumably September)? I know from my own experience primaries always seem to quote furthest distance offered as being the initial offers, i.e. before the movement/wash-up, so the actual furthest distance offered is much further. thanks

I missed this thread until just now, but very encouraged to see large scale support for reopening of bus routes down rye lane, permanently shutting them makes absolutely no sense. if the goal was to reduce traffic, it's not had the desired effect in my household as we now have to get a taxi to Denmark hill when traveling with small children and luggage. if the goal was to increase cycling, as a regular cyclist I can't say it helps, as, in my view, rye lane was fine to cycle down with buses on, and is arguably now more dangerous with pedestrians in the middle of the road. having had a well locked bike stolen from under a camera in Peckham rye bike sheds last year, after which I was told following filling in 30 minutes of forms that there's no CCTV, that's where simple focus from the council could be applied to increase cycling. shame that I missed the zoom 'consultation', please let me know if there's a link where I can submit my thoughts to the council on the matter, else will go direct via my councillor.

buzzard seen yesterday from Peckham rye, fairly high up and circling, looked like roughly over nunhead cemetery.

there's now a consultation on what should replace the bowling green, I've just submitted why I think a tennis court would be a great idea... /forum/read.php?5,2144121

hi, just seeing if anyone would like a game of tennis at one of the local courts? don't know anyone around here who plays. I'm a somewhat out of practice probably intermediate player, 40yo, fit, and male. drop me a line if you're interested, the weather's lovely! Matt

if i can add my name to any email / petition to get tennis courts on the rye, i would be more than happy to do so.

I arranged for Simon to look at our boiler which had stopped working and displayed an error message. As it happened, when he turned it on, it started working and no error message appeared. He offered some thoughts on what might have caused the boiler to stop temporarily, and didn't charge us for the call out. Simon was friendly and helpful, and I would expect to call him again should the need arise.

I'd recommend cycling too - back streets / park and cycle superhighway make it not nearly such a daunting prospect as it was a few years ago. 35-45 mins and you are in control of your departure times much more than public transport. Otherwise another option is to cycle to Peckham for the direct train to St Pancras (or with one change at Blackfriars - a step across the platform you get a few more departure time options).

Earlier in this thread (January), it was mentioned that there would more trains on the crystal palace- Dalston junction overground line from 2018, and more on the Clapham junction- Dalston junction line in 2019... Anyone know if this is still happening? Guess not as no direct mention of it here https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/london-overground/improving-london-overground#on-this-page-0
