  1. I just received the below email and knowing the 'people power' of the local residents, thought I'd share: The government is trying to change the law so big energy companies can drill for gas under our homes - without asking us. [Dulwich and West Norwood is sat on top of a seam of gas - and it?s already been earmarked for drilling. So unless these plans are stopped, gas could be sucked from under your home very soon. But together, we could do just that. Because to change the law the government needs MPs to vote for it in parliament. And the vote's in just a few weeks. Let's make it clear that backing dirty energy companies over constituents would be a toxic move. A huge people-powered petition against the plans - which we can hand in to our MPs - will make sure all MPs know the way they should vote. Will you stand up for your home ? The plans - simple changes to existing trespass law - could mean your home surrounded by noisy machines, and your local park turned into a gas field. All without your permission. The process - known as fracking - could also poison our water and produce toxic waste. And it?s known to cause earthquakes. All over the country, people and local councils have been refusing planning permission to dirty energy companies for fracking. But this change in the law takes away our power to say no to it happening under our homes. When we work together, we?re stronger. And we?re not alone. Greenpeace supporters, Friends of the Earth members and thousands of grassroots campaigners are all standing hand-in-hand to stop these plans, for each other's homes. It?s a truly people-powered effort. Will you join us? Sign the petition here: https://secure.38degrees.org.uk/page/s/mps-vote-against-fracking#petition

  3. Hi Emmie - we had to do exactly this last year. The ceiling height on the first floor is now 2.4cm & we have our loft room as the master bedroom & it's our favourite room (the loft has the minimum legal ceiling height). We couldn't be more happy with the result. Definitely worth it. We're in a Victorian terrace - if you want to take a look send me a PM Ali
  4. Yup me to, since lunchtime :-(
  5. Another reason not to get a CPZ IMO ... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-15881831 Resident parking permits increase across London - some have increased by more than 50% between 2008 & 2011...
  6. I used to live in a flat in Herne Hill - a good 10-15mins walk from Brixton tube station. Lambeth council introduced a CPZ around the tube station, so all the drivers that were parking close to the tube, began parking on roads out of the CPZ that were a 5 min walk from the station So Lambeth council introduced MORE CPZ's,this time on those streets that were a 5 min walk away from the tube. So drivers started parking in the roads that were a 7 minute walk from the station. So Lambeth council introduced MORE CPZ's on the roads that were 7 min walk from the station. So the cars started parking on the roads that were a 10 minute walk from the station.... you see where I'm going with this. Now my flat, a good 10minute+ walk from the station has a CPZ. AND ALL THE ROADS IN BRIXTON HAVE CPZ's. Traffic wardens go up and down all day on their scooters, catching people out and ticketing them. And you cannot park anywhere. It's a totally hostile environment. Furthermore, visitors permits that were once quite reasonably priced, have gotten more and more expensive and I think I'm not wrong in saying that trader parking permits are now ?25+ per day. So when you want the plumber to come fix your boiler, add another ?25 to that bill. While I sympathise with those that have trouble parking outside their houses (I sometimes have this because of the local pub!), the trouble is that if this is introduced, it will gradually roll out until all the streets have CPZ's and none of us will be able to park anywhere except on our small allocated patch of road and we'll all be charged for the privilege. You won't be able to pop along to the Leisure Centre, the post office, a cafe, to the dentist, to the doctor - because unless you live on that street, you won't have a permit. All the streets will have CPZ's eventually. Please say no to this.
  7. Can I assume that all those who object to kids being in pubs don't have children themselves? I get berated enough by my childless friends for not being able to hang-out more, now it seems I'll hack off everyone else that's in the pub for coming out. Truly the problem here is that our culture revolves around going 'to the pub'. Btw Yummy Mummy = offensive
  8. One of the reasons I love East Dulwich is because we can park here! As a former Brixton / Herne Hill resident it's an absolute nightmare as soon as CPZs are introduced - you cannot park anywhere there now without paying ?6 an hour. It started with the roads by the tube then progressively spread and got more expensive. My husbands mum (granny) lives there and we can't visit her unless we want to pay ?12 to have a cup of tea. Even WITH one of the authorised visitor permits, if you don't tick all the right boxes and scratch the right dates off, you get fined. We were fined ?80 - because we'd written our reg in in pencil instead of pen. An honest mistake but the council didn't care. In addition, local business are now suffering there because no-one can park. I realise the proposal is currently for a few streets in ED but these things have a way of ballooning. This is just a hostile way of making cash out of ED resdients - I would oppose this all the way.
