Economy, Energy & Enviromental crises
Huguenot replied to LadyDeliah's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The only thing that worries me about these 'problems' are the artificial hurdles placed by fundamentalists who prevent solutions being enacted. The principal crisis with environment is food - whilst society is perfectly capable of dealing with the infrastructure costs of wayward weather, it can't if it's not eating. The solution to the food crisis is genetic modification: a solution currently blocked by fundamentalists who see science as unnatural, and hark back to a fictional agrarian earthly paradise as the answer (an approach that cannot possibly feed 9 billion people). Similarly the answers with energy already sit before in nuclear power: a solution currently crippled by fundamentalists who see confuse their own lack of comfort with a flaw in the technology. They wallow in terror of the hundreds who have suffered at the hands of nuclear power, but are blind to the billions that suffer as a result of fossil fuels. The economy is a red herring: obsessions with 'debt' are ridiculous tubs for year one fundamentalists to beat for people who don't feel they have the opportunities they desire. Currency is a means to the exchange of goods and services, nothing else. The death of currency will be as long and painless as its introduction. The alternative probably sits in front of us now in simple forms of local barter. They best approach to this would be to stop equating 'change' with 'disaster' and 'unknown' with 'non-existence'. Fundamentalists need to be sidelined to their daft nostalgic fantasies of some Hobbit idyll, and allow brilliant people to do their job. -
Technically profiles are never 'deleted' they are deactivated so no further posts can be made. Posts made prior to deactivation will still be visible (to ensure the board still makes sense). This effect can also be achieved by you simply stopping using the profile, so this is this recommended course of action. Admin can 'force' deactivation in extreme circumstances (for example if a poster is banned) but since this is labour intensive and Admin is a voluntary position it's rarely imposed. Does that help? I'm not an Admin so I can't do this for you :) however, one of them will be reading this thread...

You won't get much credit for responding to the observation that a man's character is the sum of his thoughts and deeds rather than ostentatious peacocking with 'well, what are you wearing?'.

Ah, but no - these beards aren't the idle collateral damage of indolent ne'er-do-wells, but the carefully coiffed creation of depraved Gaius Germanicus wannabes. The wiry Mandelbrot complexity of the barbs disguises the shallow predictability of their personalities.

Do tell Cyclemonkey - that's an interesting story if illegal traders contributed to urban renewal?
-
Surely a beard is such an impractical act of vanity that it sits alongside binding your feet and belladonna eye drops?

The only challenge you might have is if those who can't hit the magic 75% lose interest :( The option's still open to multiply final score (not including maxxis) by percentage of games played, even if it drives Jah wild. I wish I could play but I know sweet fanny adams about football.

Not to worry, from what I can tell in richard tudor's total of 47 posts he's got at least 5 other frivolous and possibly vexatious demands for random information outstanding for the council, and at least 2 accusations of deception and/or fraud. So there's still lots more to keep us running around after him. ;-)
-
Maybe because if you have a problem when there is no evidence one exists, that you should have to pay a little bit of the cost in effort to find the answer. Have you come across vexatious litigation? ;-)
-
No, but maybe I was remiss in thinking other people might.

Except that ?170m hasn't been paid out, all that's happened is that paying rent to a landlord has migrated into paying interest to a financial lender at a saving of ?1.5m annually. Those savings have already been published - what other figures do you want to see? I would imagine an FOI request will simply be referred to Southwark's annual report. We shouldn't waste local taxpayers' money with frivolous requests.

The complaint against sniping seems to be that by bidding at the last instant it prevents earlier bidders from bidding higher. However, if earlier bidders were below their limit, then they're deliberately trying to deceive other purchasers by underbidding in a attempt to acquire goods at less than the value they place upon them. They hardly have a moral leg to stand on if someone gave them a dose of their own medicine. So I can't see a problem with sniping from that perspective. Sellers (and hence auction house commissions) may be restricted by such practices, but given that the solution is so simple and already widely available (do not set a fixed completion time, just a time range) then they are making a commercial decision not to use it. So I can't see a problem from that perspective. The fact is that bidders are trying to get the lowest successful price, and sellers the highest - whingeing is pointless.

And I'll be betting they wielded a Duncan Fearnley. I went to his factory once you know :)

Indeed! I've been reading that the actual AD 1 year was chosen because it meant that there would be a gloriously convenient conjunction of the planets in exactly AD 2000 - neatly facilitating the end of the world. However, the fact that the Bible was clear that Jesus was 30 during some Roman Emporer's notable moment meant that Jesus could only have been born around 4 or 5 BC. But then I also understand that none of the Churches seem to give much of a fig about that, so we probably shouldn't either.

I'm aware of the anti-Vietnam War protests, I've just never heard those protests described as support rallies for Mao Zedong? Isn't that why they're called 'protests' - they're against something? Either way, the trades union movement may well have supported Mao, but the Guardian did not support the unions' socialist movements at that time, and certainly did not support Mao. So your assertion about Guardian readers who should be ashamed is unfortunately in error in this case. I'm sure there are plenty of their examples though - so don't give up the campaign! -
In case anyone else is confused, Iceland is not and never has been a worker's cooperative, and it's been in more leveraged buyouts than M&S has prawn sandwiches. Its founder and chairman was even charged with insider trading after offloading masses of shares before declaring a profits warning. One time CEO of Iceland Stuart Rose only stepped down a year ago from Chairman of... M&S!

Hmmm, strictly speaking there weren't any years between 1AD and 525AD, and only a few doughty enthusiasts experienced 526AD to around 800AD.

Well they've got the Rugby World Cup in a few years time and need to build a fan base, and they might give him a red hat with gold piping? I think UK clubs have something like a ?4.5m annual cap for the whole team. He may get ?1m just for himself in Nippon, and a lucrative coaching role.

Dulwich Hospital Wasteland - New ED Carpark?
Huguenot replied to Gimme's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The challenge with affordable housing is that unless it's unappealing housing it rapidly becomes unaffordable housing. Housing will become affordable when we build enough for supply to outstrip demand, whilst simultaneously shutting down the social crime of buy-to-let. Just spending more taxpayer cash or more housing benefit distorts a ridiculous market to an unworkable conclusion. -
You've confused yourself m&m fairy - if the middle classes are 'snobs' they wouldn't be shopping at Primark, eating at McD's and drinking at Wetherspoons would they? Am I right in saying you used to run Jack's cafe serving frittatas and pastrami (surely the snack du jour of the middle class snob)? Hating your customers and abusing them on social media probably won't help your business much?

That's interesting Quids - I can't find any reference to those protests, can you give more details? When was this? If it was the 50s and 60s they would be unlikely to be Guardian readers - at that stage the Guardian was considered a capitalist rag. The Guardian campaigned against Attlee and Bevan, and even opposed the creation of the NHS, believing it to be symptomatic of a nation in decay. -
Very kind of you to take one on the chin to balance the books for us shaman. ;) Is it possible that male wiccans are responding to some inner sub/dom yearning?

Tuilagi's 31 and his side haven't offered him another contract. He has reached the age where injuries start to set in and he'll spend more time on the bench an on the field. Japan have offered him mega money (they've got plenty of ambition) and the less physical nature of the game over there will probably mean he gets injured less and can play for longer.
