Never been called but would be happy to ?do my duty?. My other half, on the other hand, is a magistrate and therefore, effectively, does jury duty voluntarily every week (albeit ?judge and jury duty? alongside two others) - for no financial reward or compensation whatsoever (beyond travel expenses). Without magistrates the whole judicial system would grind to a halt. Virtually all criminal cases and most civil cases are first heard in a magistrates court. My understanding is that somewhere in the region of 95% of criminal cases are dealt with in their entirety at that level.

East Dulwich pubs ? intolerable music volume

Planning application submitted for new DHFC stadium
dc replied to BrandNewGuy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
dc Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Yes. They?ve withdrawn both the lease application > and the planning application. Sorry, this not quite correct. They have withdrawn the two linked planning applications and have notified both Southwark Planning and the Planning Inspectorate of this. It is not clear if they have officially withdrawn from the lease case yet. I was working on the supposition that they have pulled out of the planning process because they do not intend to provide the ?150,000 ?security for costs? to which they refer in their statement. If this is the case - which I think one can reasonably infer - the lease hearing will not go ahead and the lease will automatically remain with Southwark. -

Yes. They?ve withdrawn both the lease application and the planning application. -
When I was at university (studying genetics and microbiology) we had to do a final year project/dissertation. One of my fellow students studied the microbial content of bottled waters. They found coliform bacteria (an indicator of contamination) in a number of brands of still water. The acceptable level for tap water is zero as their presence indicates a contamination within the water supply which, of course, could have huge public health implications. No carbonated bottled water had any viable coliforms. This would always be the case as the carbon-dioxide lowers the pH to a level of acidity where pathogenic bacteria will not survive. Not sure how good it is for the enamel on your teeth though. I drink tap water - and sometimes filtered tap water because it improves the taste of my tea. The filtration would not remove any bacteria if there were any present anyway. Sometimes I drink carbonated water when I?m out if it has a particular flavour - the alka-seltzer taste of Badoit for eg. It?s possible that standards have improved in the still-water bottling industry (the project was almost 30 years ago) but I don?t see the point of drinking it at home and I haven?t looked them up.

The > proposed boundary changes look much more sensible > taking in parts of Forest Hill and Sydenham but a > worried Helen Hayes opposes them vigorously. Sorry, I can?t let that go, not least because it?s one of the few things I actually know something about. The ?analysis? above is simply untrue. In 1997, when it was created, the new ?Dulwich and West Norwood? seat actually had a smaller notional (ie a calculation of what the result would have been in the new seat in the previous 1992 election) Labour majority than that of the old ?Dulwich? seat. The real change has been in the demographics and the voting patterns of electors in London. When I first came here to live in the mid-80s the Tories had 8 seats on Southwark Council. They held 3 wards outright in the old Dulwich seat and the then two member Alleyn ward - loosely East Dulwich - had one Labour and one Tory Councillor. Now they have just two out of the three members in Village ward. How EDOldie thinks retaining the old boundaries - effectively keeping the parts of Peckham and Camberwell south of Peckham High Street and Peckham Road would have made the seat more marginal is beyond me. Camberwell and Peckham currently has a Labour majority of 37,316 (65%). At the 2017 General Election, Labour had majorities of 23,162 (16.6%) and 21,123 (44.8%) respectively, in the Lewisham West & Penge, and Lewisham East constituencies to the south of ours. Good luck with carving a marginal out of that. It is clear that the same social and political changes were what also drove the very high Remain votes in Southwark and Lambeth. Remember, Streatham had never had a Labour MP (not even in the great landslide of 1945) until Keith Hill won the seat in 1992. Chuka Umunna MP now has a majority there of 26,285 (47.1%). The change in the marginality of our constituency really has nothing to do with the 1997 boundary changes and everything to do with the changing nature and political outlook of the people who live here.

Very pleased to see in the Independent article that Peter John, the Leader of Southwark Council, says that: ?We are never going to let the club fail?. Whatever difficulties the club faces right now and in the future, that is very reassuring. The club, founded in 1893, is older than most of East Dulwich itself. It would appear that Southwark recognises Dulwich Hamlet?s current contribution to the local community and its historical significance. -
None of which I?m aware. They do have young kids (and on one memorable occasion a grown man) who come out with the players before kick-off in team shirts but I?m guessing that isn?t the sort of mascot you had in mind?

Just a reminder that today is Non-League Day and it?s ?Pay What You Like? at Champion Hill Stadium for the Hamlet?s Isthmian League clash with Needham Market at 3pm. Any profits from gate receipts will be going to two local charities (The Copleston Centre and Lambeth & Southwark Mind) with half of the ?50/50? takings going to Prostate Cancer UK - the FA?s designated charity. The club is expecting a bumper crowd and the advice is to get there early as there have been large queues at the turnstiles before kick-off at recent matches.

The scheduled match at home to Harlow Town this Tuesday (3rd October) has been postponed as Harlow are involved in an FA Cup replay. The next home match will therefore be the ?pay what you like? game at 3pm on Non League Saturday - 7th October vs Needham Market. All profits will go to two local charities: The Copleston Centre and Lambeth & Southwark Mind.

Tough old game tonight but a very good one to win. Two clean sheets on the bounce.

To be clear: as has been stated above, yesterday the footballing side of things at Dulwich Hamlet organised a charity match between 4pm and 6.30pm in support of those suffering as a result of the August mudslides in Sierra Leone. This was an initiative that came from a number of Dulwich Hamlet players and coaches, was supported by the Football Committee and the Supporters? Trust, and was very much in line with the community values of the club. The other event was allowed to happen by the current owners. It may seem like a technical difference but it isn?t. It is, in fact, fundamental to the future of Dulwich Hamlet where the aim is for it to be owned by its supporters and run in the interests of the club and the local community.

Huggers Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Wow has the long-missed lost rail link between > London bridge and Charing Cross been restored > without me even noticing?! Yep, since the end of August 2016. As I mentioned above there were restrictions for the first year, with trains leaving CX not stopping at London Bridge in the morning peak and those passing through London Bridge towards CX not stopping between 4.30pm and 6pm. Now, since early September, trains scheduled to stop are doing so in both directions at all times. The link to Cannon Street should be restored in January 2018 and all work completed by ?Spring? 2018.

The link into CX from London Bridge is now working again in the evening peak having previously been out of action between 4.30 and 6pm going into town.

The only birthdate information that is given is for rising 18s - to determine when they will be eligible to vote during the publication year of a particular register. Completely agree with the ?absolutely sickening? comment of course.

Ummm. Not sure how to take this rather surreal turn in the thread, so I?ll take it at face value and say that it wasn?t.

House prices in ED - new Tribeca development overpriced?

The church on one side of Adys Road and the vicarage on the other side are both in SE22 and, in effect, mark the SE22/SE15 border at that point. -
Fly tipping Forest Hill Road/Dunstans Road

James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Charging for busy waste collection has led to more fly tipping. Some empirical evidence in support of this claim would be helpful. Worth noting in this context (i.e. a LibDem Cllr trying to point score against a Labour controlled borough) that the only LibDem controlled London borough charges ?30 for up to 4 items and ?50 for 5-8 items. Southwark charges ?16 for up to 10 items. -

I would love to pay MP's in warm beer and > burgers, VAT and Council Tax I understand the sentiment but I think you need to take into account the nature of the event. I've been on a number of governing bodies and voluntary organisations. On every one of them lawyers, accountants, architects, IT professionals etc have all given their time and their professional skills freely and without any thought of remuneration. Without such input our schools couldn't function and - with magistrates also being unpaid - our legal system would grind to a halt. I imagine that everyone involved in organising these community events are giving their time freely and working very hard to make them a success. If people are happy to play music to add to people's enjoyment that's up to them and I'm sure everyone involved will be extremely grateful and the day will be made more enjoyable.
