I think they are mawkish and almost bring out an element of rubbernecking in people; but I can also see where there is a sudden death, they provide the opportunity for people to respond in an immediate way. Grief is private, but when young lives are involved, how do classmates/ friends come to terms with losing someone. I think many people find themselves already prepared/ expectant when they lose a loved one - but that's not the case in roadside deaths. And a simple act of leaving a message in a significant place perhaps offers a ritual that can be helpful. But I agree they need to be taken down within a certain period - a month at the very most. Leaving flowers to rot and die with tattered bits of paper, where one can no longer even make out a message, just re-inforces the bleakness of the event in my opinion. What I personally can't stand is public grieving over strangers - the Dianas and the Jacksons of the world.

The Belle-Carnells can't make it.....though we might pop in for a cheeky one at the end of the night.

Midsummer at Soho Theatre - a play with songs (but definitely not a musical) was one of the most delightful plays I've seen in ages. A love story yet also a ripping good yarn - fun, poignant, surprising - and with two brilliant versatile actors. Perfect for a miserable end of January cold evening. Go!

I don't believe for a minute they go that fast - Personally I would rather see kids flying round a park, doing something active, than sitting at home in front of a computer screen. Surely if you walk on the grass you won't be bothered? Most of London's most vibrant parks will have some kind of activity that is going to annoy and irritate some - rollerblading in Hyde Park anyone - but I suspect deaths by trikes or rollerbladers are few and far between.

All power to him I say. Must say in the Belle Carnell household, one is more likely to catch a glimpse of these: http://www.marksandspencer.com/Thermal-Ribbed-Longpants-with-Wool/dp/B002LOANIM?ie=UTF8&qid=1263473884&categoryNodeID=43371030&ref=sr_1_5&page=&node=53905031&sr=1-5&mnSBrand=core&rh=

Acid Casual - you certainly seem to have a great boxing knowledge (and sparring with Benn is certainly something special) so I wonder if you think like me that Naz was always set-up to lose due to Brendan Ingle.... Let me explain....I've read reports that Ingle is renowned for producing young boxers with super fast reflexes and practicing the "hands-down-by-waist get-the-&%$(-out the way style of defence. Now Naz was no doubt a superb practitioner of this art. It allowed his powerful punches to come from unorthodox angles confusing and hurting opponents. BUT....with age all of Ingle's fighters reflexes begin to wain. Without the basics of good defensive skills they begin to get hit more and more creating a vicious cycle. Eventually they lose. And cannot come back because by then, it's too late. Hamed allowing his family to run his career and slow up on his training certainly didn't help but I can't help wonder whether the seeds of defeat were sown early on in a Sheffield gym....

Personally I am looking forward to Posh at the Royal Court in April - Laura Wade is a terrific writer - I saw her debut play Breathing Corpses a couple of years ago and loved it.

A smacked child ?is a successful child?
Bellenden Belle replied to silverfox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
How do you define success silverfox? Good exam results? High earning potential? Doesn't necessarily make for a well-rounded individual; able to distinguish from right and wrong; who knows how to handle themselves and to treat those around them with respect and humanity. -
Happy Birthday MP....make it a good one!

I agree with MM - I think it's quite sad to see such a negative response to the original post. Sometimes we have to take responsibility for things that happen to us and accept that some things - like bad weather- just happen and are nobody's fault. We complain about a nanny state, but whoops - one fall and we want to know why there wasn't someone there waiting to catch us.

Am I the only one curious as to the original message..... Glad you made it safe and sound though!

Can I play devil's advocate for a moment? If you support a charity and wish them to succeed and continue in a difficult financial climate, then surely you can't object to them making an ask of you and others. Which you can choose to ignore. Or, give them a call and ask them to remove you from their mailing list. At least give them a chance to respect your wishes. You may well not be able to afford that much money. But others will. If you ask people for ten pounds, thats what you will get. Ask for one hundred and if they can afford it that's what people will give. Working in charity I have seen millionaires giving three pounds a month on direct debit - no doubt because a form once arrived asking them for that amount. -

Much discussion has taken place in the Belle-Carnell household. Already I have been forced to rehome my fairy (soon to be resident at the Mike P's abode) but today my coloured fairy lights were also deemed tacky! Well! So my question dear forumites is - how do you dress yours? And let's have some pictures too!

I have a pair of tickets to a BBC recording session of David Sedaris this Sunday at 6.45pm. I can't make it. Would anyone like to go?

An alternative place to eat is the Wellcome Centre - three minutes from Euston. http://www.wellcomecollection.org/eatandshop/index.htm It's a fabulous space, is licensed and is great if you're looking for a light supper followed by devilishly good cake option. Worth looking at the exhibitions if you get a chance too.
