East Dulwich Station Mural is being painted
se22cat replied to eastDAG's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Am honestly gutted at being tied up the whole weekend, really wanted to get some photos of the piece from start to finish : ( On the positive side, having seen the artists other work, I just know its going to be fantastic and something I'll enjoy seeing every time I pass the station, and yes, doing creative work in horrible weather is a real test on ones patience, so extra kudos to them for that! So happy to see the area getting more street art : ) -
Rogue moped riders operating in this area
se22cat replied to Robert Poste's Child's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Before we had to pay poll tax, you'd see Police on foot patrol all around the area in Goose Green, now we've lost our station, pay more tax, and seeing a beat cop is a rarer sighting than a shiny Pokemon : / To be fair though, when I did report a gang of around 10 scooters bombing down our street without plates a patrol car was heard in pursuit just a couple of minutes later, no idea if anything came of it though. -

Very sorry to hear about yet more people in ED experiencing bike crime : ( Having a nice bike has become something of a status symbol amongst kids these days, it was seemingly only the local weed delivery mules that rode obviously stolen bikes up until a few years ago. It seems the food chain these days is now: Stolen Boris Bike slow, heavy and easily spotted by police (a rare, endangered species, sometimes heard, but rarely ever seen in SE London) now seen us unfashionable, Moving up to stolen OFO bike, probably only takes a few minutes if that to disable, as the police know they can be parked anywhere in London, less suspicious, "everyone is doing it" and have become something of a status symbol. You can't do tricks or wheelies with them very well, too heavy and they look uncool so only a temporary solution. Fixie bikes or flashy carbon fibre road bikes, a clear status symbol of street urchins everywhere, it's obviously been stolen, they would have almost certainly sold the first couple at Brick Lane market to get money in their pocket, so not their first stolen bike if they are riding it. Dirtbags have the internet too, so they know which bikes, like Bromptons sell for the most, and with zero police on the streets in many areas, just a slap on the wrist for the first time they are caught, and laughable sentences the second time around it's no surprise things have got out of hand. The parent/s are absolutely complicit in this type of crime, even someone half blind can tell there's no way they would get a nice looking bike for a few quid. And with those OFO bikes, surely even the most braindead parent would realise they don't come for free. I have to say that the general level of bike locking in ED is pretty atrocious, and with kids seeing locked bikes as a convenient spares resource, as can be seen on the video below, hope to see people doing a better job of it. This is staged as hell, but still a satisfying watch https://youtu.be/VnpmYps8xK8?t=17

Just think of what became of the catflap thread, the mere thought of a Dutch uncle has my keyboard quivering in fear. -
Horrible to hear what happened, it seems violent bike thefts are increasingly common, have heard the quiet line between Peckham library that goes through Burgess Park has been the scene of several bike muggings this year too. This got posted on the news today too. https://www.bbc.com/news/av/uk-england-merseyside-45453786/manchester-cyclist-dragged-across-road-during-mugging

In Japan, blow up dolls are known as "Dutch wives" maybe OP's shinobi senses are detecting an increase of those in the area masquerading as yummy mummies? -
I think 2 Girls 1 Cup use the "pour over" method.

I don't shop there (my wife likes the vegan food stall though) but I've always loved the energy of North Cross Road market on a Saturday morning, especially since it's revival thanks to our local councillors amongst others a few years ago. It's super friendly, attracts a lot of people from outside the area and although it's very small, there's lots to see, hear and smell - a real feast for the senses! I miss the cat with the pirate collar that used to stroll around near the chemists, was so sad to hear it passed away.

Our neighbours on both sides always offer warm and friendly greetings to visitors, so even if they opened their door without it being rung, would have heard their greeting, but heard nothing (window was open, so would have heard). Thanks for the tip, I guess a tidy up of the garden and a visible alarm are in order. Maybe this will finally convince wifey we should get a woofer : )

I swear by Dr Bummi at http://dulwichdentalcare.uk/ she's the best dentist I've ever seen, she's taken care of me for ages now and always been fantastic! I hear you about the NHS and hygienist treatments, it's all a bit of a mess and feel that at least some of the costs should be covered by the govt, but in times when even a bunch of operations are due to no longer be available so there's not much hope for dental cleaning under the NHS unless someone strikes oil in Catford or something.

I feel doubly stupid and frustrated at myself for not taking the opportunity to get a look at the guy : ( I definitely plan on getting something like a NEST setup in the future, you can also make your own with a few Raspberry Pi's, though you have to be careful to choose a weatherproof case with adequate cooling for the later models. ED is brilliant, let's keep on looking out for each other!

I had our front window open downstairs to get some fresh air this evening, and was working in the room behind it with the light on when someone rang our bell twice, I turned the hall light on and just as I was going towards the door, the voice of a young-ish man said "very sorry, meant to knock next door". Normally I always open the door to get a look at the person, but they sounded polite and apologetic so thought nothing of it and went back to what I was doing. It wasn't until a few minutes later that I realised nobody had rung or knocked at either of our neighbours, nor had there been anyone speaking in the immediate vicinity. Am kicking myself now for not bothering to see what they looked like, but I think it's either clear that they were either an opportunistic thief, or all the break ins around here have put me in a state of paranoia. Either way, just thought I'd post. Let the ridicule begin!

Scumbag playing loud music on Worlingham road
se22cat replied to se22cat's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Ah, well, whoever was the guilty party, they seemed hell bent on destroying their sub-bass unit...There's a fair few health professionals and others on Crawthew who work shifts. I know the very nice group of builders working on the White's former house (one of their sons spent a good 7 years or so doing it up, mostly by himself before selling, only to have all his hard work knocked out...)have been switched to a new lot, and the ones working on the house next door have been working in teams throughout the night and weekends for the last month or so, not very nice for the neighbours : ( Apologies for the rant! -
Does anyone know which number on Worlingham is playing this crap EDM at full blast in the morning? I have a feeling it's the same person who used to do the same thing at night into the early hours a while ago before the council intervened. The sound of their rubbish music, along with annoying as hell bassline is making it over to our street and is driving me mad. I want to report it to the noise team before this becomes a regular habit.

Book Clubs in ED or surrounding areas
se22cat replied to Sparkler's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
This fantastic series [surely deserved a third season!] should get you in the mood https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcSLA8I8I04 Both Radio 2 and 4 have book clubs: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01b7431 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006s5sf podcasts here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006s5sf/episodes/downloads Even the World Service has one: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p003jhsk Here is a warning against the evils of booze and book clubs; as ED residents are well known for their love of grog, I doubt this piece's findings will have any real effect! https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/entertainment-arts-18093926/does-booze-ruin-book-clubs Would post more from other sites, but am on the bus. Good luck with the club, maybe do a podcast or at least a blog with twitter/hipstergram account to share thoughts on what you are reading? -
