http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00qplyv/Case_Notes_Maternity/ Our very own Mike Marsh has his say (NOT my favourite person, I personally think he's a fool!) A good interview all the same and I guess I like the approach. Ruth, from Brierley midwives (my midwife :-)) is also interviewed - again interesting. Kings are building a midwifery division onto Kings with 5 rooms .. fab!

I was just about to ask about fevers. My son hasn't had a fever at all and seems completely fine. He threw up his dinner so I gave him a rusk and a little yoghurt and then my breast and he again threw up a little again. Its very disheartening when you can't keep your little one fed. Bring on the sunshine and healthy vibes ..!!

ah - just reading your post Pickle - My mother used to give us grated apple when we were young if we had upset tummies and even nausea .. I have absolutely no idea why grated BUT its the only thing we used to actually keep down (I still do it now if I'm ill in fact.)

Ladies .. what age group are we talking about here ..? My son is 7 months old but has vomited up his morning breast feed in bed, diarrhoea whilst having breakfast, followed by bringing his solid meal up too but he seems completely fine with it all .. NHS direct have been amazing .. its difficult when to know to start worrying hey? Its only been a few hours but he's still very little so I don't know if I should ride it out for the rest of the day .. He had a terrible reaction to something over the weekend and we ended up at SELDOC with a red hot rash and swollen neck and vomiting - but he's better now - so thinking this is unrelated and its this tummy bug .. or not!! (just writing this is making me think i'm being stupid - calling the doc now ;-)

yes!! my son is 7 months now and I was breech right until the end too. I also tried everything - including moxibustion. (in fact I have lots of those charcoal sticks left so I can give them to you so you can do it yourself.) I initially went to see Dan at Dulwich Therapy rooms for the moxibustion and then continued the process at home - the first few times my bub definitely moved but there after it didn't bother him at all. I chatted at length to my midwives to continue with a natural breech delivery but then gave in to the idea of an ECV - which was successful. Another lady in my NCT class was also breech and her ECV was also a success. I found the ECV very painful, but she found it was fine. Looking back I am completely happy that I went along with the ECV option. I was nervous but was initially seen by Laila Fahael at Kings who explained everything to me and then the lady who preformed the ECV was ... I forget the name .. but she was an Indian lady and she was amazing. She's very professional and very confident and I liked her bedside manner. You've just got to remain calm and confident that it'll go your way - and I'm quite sure it will (don't worry about the stats for now ;-) All the best and good luck

Fuschia - that's awful that they missed that! Not suprised you have no faith in the service but very weirdly I was considering putting up a thread to say how great my experience with SELDOC has been - just yesterday my 7 month old son fell terribly sick very quickly due to a bad reaction to something so his neck blew up in a red and white rash, then it got into his eyes, projectile vomiting followed this, and we had to get onto them - they called us back in no time - only to tell us to go straight to the hospital - and they saw him immediately. I had to use them a few months back and again they looked after me. [its always good to know the other side though - I'll be prepared for it now - thanks!]

doh - sorry! cleva ladies ;-)

Forest Hill Road Surgery rocks! that's if that's possible when it comes to doctors .. Completely agree with Molly - Brierley midwives are fantastic too! Congratulations and all the best x

There's a video? mmm .. I didn't get one :-( I managed it by looking at the instructions in the little booklet. I agree with it sitting low on the kids though - I also thought that - its the same for us.

lorraineliyanage - I managed to figure out the hip position whilst standing in dixons at heathrow airport a few weeks back (!!) my little one was about to loose his head from all the swinging to and fro as he was trying to look around and kept pressing away from my front. I think its pretty easy and actually find i can do it midway in a shop now too. I really like the hip position when i'm out shopping if i can't find a trolley with a seat, or if i'm just nipping in. I do find myself cradling him with one hand - but i think that's more for security then anything else and it takes away the weight from my arm - i can take my hand away if i need both hands for something. My boy is almost 8 months and he's a rather solid heavy cha but i still manage .. welcome to pop around and try it out if anyone's thinking about spending the cash on one .. hope that helps!

The Ergo is amazing go (in my opinion) and I tried loads of different ones (beg borrow and steal from friends ;-) I find it very easy to use - it goes on the back, front and hip. Its so sturdy (my little one is big and heavy as well.) The baby bush (Little Life) were my other choice - but I decided I wanted the choice on where to wear my little one, front or back .. but then I think the baby bush will take their weight for longer when they're more heavy?? don't know ..

Sounds awful for you! I had bad morning sickness .. and it didn't let up after the first 3 months like its "supposed to" but I just managed it as best possible. Sorry, hopefully its different for you obviously - some people do just wake up on a morning and its gone over night though. With all the tips above hopefully something will work for you though .. Just take things slow (obviously) - it helps to take it easy and guard your energy. I went to yoga so became familiar with breathing and relaxing techniques .. I lived on weak horlicks, hob nobs and yoghurt - so whatever you can eat/drink go for it. (I actually lost 10kgs which I stressed about terribly and felt awful that I wasn't providing my little one with everything he needs - but they take what they need and he came out fat and happy!)

Is anyone watching "One Born Every Minute" on C4
linzkg replied to The Nappy Lady's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Ha ha! I was dying to open my laptop and start something - I knew you'd be on the case Molly;-) Pickle - completely agree, in fact main reason I wanted to get on here (how sad) as that man was doing my head in!! argh, can you imagine!! especially when she was nearing the end and he was fobbing her off saying just push.. I didn't think the second youngster was much more supportive though?? Maybe its just the cameras in their faces that makes them play up? I hope so for the partner's sake. Seeing how "clinical" everything was in the hospital was interesting .. it somehow gave me comfort I think that it's just another day and just another job and you are just another cog in the wheel so get on with it and push basically .. but obviously in another way its rather scary to think how easy it seems that you could be forgotten about coz there's just so much going on around the midwives. We're considering trying for number 2 in a few months but after last night's episode I was left rather tearful as I'm a ninny (but I also think everyone watching it at some stage must gave had a small lump - first birth was a tough one and thinking number 2 may have to be elective c - but I'm even more petrified of that (needles and stuff..) here's hoping the following episodes wear me down and I get "into" it - haha! PS, not asking for this thread to turn onto me now - I'll be asking for help closer to the time ;-) -
yip - i've always washed my little one morning and night and then lather in derma type moisturiser straight away without completely drying him off - it works a treat. hopefully he only had it mild and the heat doesn't effect him as it did with mine.
-
Just a thought, we've just come back from south africa with our 7 month old and he battled with the heat and humidity - he's a big fatty so he got a heat rash under his neck and had also had eczema as a baby - i've got a bunch of remedies at home which you are welcome to or I can tell you what we went through - nothing's heavy prescription and it has no steroid or cortisone. But other then that we just managed the time of day we went out into the sunny parts and also i'd recommend somewhere with air con? definitely a pool. ps, they tend to sleep better due to it being so hot - enjoy!

I see .. Was a little confused but thought something might have been up .. Hence I thought I'd tread lightly .. Haven't been on for a bit so came in from the back end ;-)

whats a breastfeeding counsellor and where do we get one?
linzkg replied to iaineasy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi, seems you guys are sorted now for breast feeding .. but Clare at Kings is AMAZING! I had a terrible time for the first 2 months - looking back I don't know how I continued and got through it. I had mastitis and thrush and I was also over producing milk in one breast bla bla (we had a tough start with the little one .. he was in special care bla bla .. everyone forgot about me "filling" up.) He started on donor milk in fact but now he's almost 8 months and I'm still confidently breast feeding. Clare gave me some good ideas on how to manage it and get through it. Every now and again I go out and forget (or can't be bothered) to express so we've got formula if he wants it and I don't mind either way coz it's all good in its own right. Thankfully he takes bottles and thankfully he loves coming to me for milk too. I think you can get too sensitive over it all in my opinion. I have 2 pumps now, an old fashioned electric and also the manual Lansinoh and its fab! I'd definitely recommend it! Eventually your wife will "get to know herself" and how she works and she'll be able to manage it I'm sure - I go for a day away now and don't travel with a pump - but when I'm back in my son's company they just seem to fill up and I'm ready for him to feed - its all good! All the best to your wife, and you - its awful to have to sit there and watch her in tears (and it does feel like someone is putting a nail .. sorry, not necessary hey ..) but just remember it is possible but if it doesn't work well you've both tried your best hey. -
oooh i don't know fuschia .. i've just begun this weaning and may have found this very interesting ..

Forest Hill Road Surgery is a great surgery and I'd definitely recommend them! I also second Molly - Brierley are a great bunch.

Stroller / push chair recommendations?
linzkg replied to benjaminty's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I completely agree with lorraine - the microlite is fab! I get around the local shops with a basket in one hand and buggy in the other - its v slim and folds up 'long and thin'. Great for new bubs as the car seat fits onto the base in no time. Good plump tyres - not cheap plastic ones - I was nipping in and out of the city centre with confidence. (I do need to actually sell mine but I still use it to go shopping with my 7 month old son as the car seat slips into the base but you're welcome to have a look at how it all works..) I've also bought a maclaren - this will see my baby through now - its fab too! Easy to take up and down with your baby in the other arm. I find most other makes fold flat, almost into squares as such and take up space in the boot. -
Public transport to Heathrow with a baby
linzkg replied to Keef's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We've just flown from Heathrow with a 7 month and used a local firm that provided a car seat - if you're still stuck I'll get the number for you (just trying to find it now) They were great! It was about 50 pounds I think .. Also, leaving your car at the airport isn't a bad option as it works out just as cheap/expensive! Otherwise I"d second njc97 and go that route - I've done it a few times now when seeing off friends/family and gone along for the ride - just wouldn't recommend it in peak times obviously - but it takes about as long as the cab ride (sounds like a lot but its really not.) Train from Forest Hill to London Victoria would be a better route but there are stairs at Victoria from the train to the tube .. not fun! -
Oakwood midwives - advice needed please
linzkg replied to MichelleT's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Wodey: contact Brierley midwives (my son is 7 months now so I was with them recently) The support I received from them was amazing. They offer home visits (but I think mostly only towards the end when you're "big" otherwise they run their clinics at the Dulwich hospital [which obviously makes sense] but I definitely had home visits early on too. They do try to get you to meet with all of their team in case when you go into labour your midwife isn't available - I felt this was a big bonus! They have a good relationship with Kings so you're definitely looked after there as well. I was overdue - so often on the phone to them calling for "help"! They answered their beepers in good time. I had a difficult labour - they controlled the situation very well and I never once doubted their ability. -
Brierley midwives! They're also attached to Kings so get pref treatment apparently .. they are lovely and you get to meet the whole team (generally) so if you go into labour and your midwife isn't available at least you don't have a stranger with you ..

When i was pregnant the first thing i did was look for midwives - my doc surgery at the time was absolutely useless (!!!) I secured my spot with Brierley midwives - updated my doctor at the time. I changed my doc shortly after then to the Forest Hill Road Surgery who are attached to different midwives but its never been an issue at all. Surely grabbing a midwife is a priority and worry about your GP afterwards? Sorry to sound a bit hasty but otherwise it seems your doc (who does nothing really during the pregnancy) is almost controlling it?
