The obviousness of this situation will alas be wasted on yer average DM reader, or anyone else believing Universities are for toffs. The article is headed by a pic of someone striding across the quad, captioned by 'students on the Cam'
  2. You gotta have faith. bash into small pieces : the rough edges scoop up anything nasty, and shells absorb smells. It is the drain equivalent of muesli. If you are nervous Sue, start small, with one shell, and build up? (to raiding your compost) By the end of next week you will have a post up here, 'eggshells wanted'

All these natural cleaners we can use without resorting to chemicals. I came back to say, we always use a sink strainer in the plughole, it's amazing how much debris is collected, and in the shower also, although we had to modify the trap a little. Prevention is better than cure and all that.
  4. hello Sue, here is a country sink clearing routine which works : eggshells!! don't bin them, crush them and pound them down the plughole the more the merrier and carry on as usual. They will scoop up anything lurking and sweep it away. If you have an open drain outside, in the morning you will think you have a dead rat lying there. It worked for us, always, and costs nothing! And hope you are not eating omelettes all week ha ha Also, when we have boiled the kettle for tea whatever and there is water remaining we tip it down the sink plughole. When you use lemons, cut up whats left and boil it up in a pan of water for instant air freshener, especially after cooking fish, then tip the water down the plughole. Happy gurgles !
  5. uncontrolled, unchecked, uncovered, uninhibited, unsanitary, unhinged sneezing, on public transport, in close proximity, in a queue, at the next table, wherever. "In my day" we were required to have a clean white handkerchief on leaving the house, then pack of tissues, and why do people use a tissue or hanky then shove it up their sleeve or in a pocket? If people included in their morning ritual/routine, a stout blowing of the nose, I am convinced there would be less sneezing, less airborne germs, obviously, and less colds and coughs transmitted. Who remembers the poster in their doctors waiting room, stating : "coughs and sneezes spread diseases - trap your germs in a handkerchief" This should be on all public transport and railway/tube stations. If spitting at someone is a common assault, why isn't sneezing?
  6. hello, has anyone mentioned this already if so apologies : I have ambivalent feelings as do many people, for leaving Europe, taking for granted that we would have free movement whilst waving a British passport. People wil vote according to their personal circumstance and it's true there is an age divide : older people will vote out for autonomy and perceived sovereignty but younger people with more political, fiscal and youtube nous will vote to remain as they believe they see the bigger picture. Someone made a point earlier, I forget who, sorry, about ex pats living abroad. For those of us with properties in France (especially difficult at the moment), Spain or any other EU country, this has a profound effect on our sensibilities and a ripple effect in that our families are also affected, inheritance and all that. There are many many Brits abroad, many farmers, Cornish, Devonians, Irish, Scottish, and many now ekeing a living with gites and chambre d'hote, equestrian enterprises, removal firms, builders (!) roofers, car mechanics, whatever, all anxious now as to what will become of them. Sarkozy was never a friend to the British and Hollande even less. The French are adept at extracting money from hapless buyers and sellers of land and property and the rules of the game remain fluid. The national sport has always been, beat the taxman and the losers are the straight and honest Brits, Dutch, Germans, the price of a house or property for sale rises incrementally on the nationality of the purchaser. However it has been increasingly difficult over the last five years to sell property in western Europe, and nigh on impossible to sell in rural France with the current unrest, threats of terrorism, the ATC and fisherman with their napoleonic chains across the harbour mouth, the constant strikes, the situation at Calais, and general bloody mindedness which means free passage is not always possible, although rural France ironically, has to be one of the safest places to live in the world The English (British) are not buying in France. The English in France are returning in droves, taking whatever they can for their dream homes. The cost of living in France is enormous, pictures of weekly markets and stalls burdened with fruit veg, fish etc, and a bucolic lifestyle are not representative of most of France The hidden costs, of Tax Fancier, Habitation, Utilities, fuel, and the escalating cost of wine and cigarettes, which always seemed to be the staple diet of many ancient Frenchmen, means that sojourns to France have lost their appeal. My sister bought a brand new apartment in Spain nr Seville, which she bought two years ago as the price was so low she could not resist. However the people who bought off plan and five years ago are now in despair, The English pension/s do not have the same power as they did and there are no extras. This view will I hope suggest reasons why many will vote, IN, as they see no reason to vote OUT. In the small town where we live we have seen businesses start up and fail, grind to a halt, have no backing whether from the Maire or the locals. There does not seem to be a spirit of endeavour or entrepreneurism encouraged or flourishing in new businesses, the red tape, mindless bureaucracy and intransigence of the mindset always puts paid to that. The social taxes are extortionate, which is why cafes restaurants and shops are family run mostly. I guess you all know this. For allthose people saying, we want our children to be able to travel/study/work in Europe, I would suggest that the picture is very different now. Europe is not a safe place anymore. However money for study or travel will still have the same cachet. Work I am not too sure about. The only educated people working in France (Paris or Bordeaux)I met were teachers, Embassy, wine merchants and exporters, and banker (one) British builders and ancillaries are mostly redundant in France, for obvious reasons. The Dutch and Belgians, Germans are staying away in droves. This is my view from the pont for what it's worth. We buy run down places in France and Spain for our retirement whatever, spend too much money on 'doing them up' and now cannot sell for what we bought them for. It is beyond dispiriting. We need strong leadership that's for sure - one who does not embarrass us, bumbling Boris and his Turkish army he is our fifth column. If anyone else has a personal European viewpoint they have already espoused or about to I would be pleased to read it

  9. hello, is there anyone/family who has attended the procession along the Mall or wherever, who could recommend a good spot to stand, please? We will have a three year old, and our main concern seems to be proximity of toilets. She will be on our shoulders for most of the time. Also, what is the optimum time to be there. Thanks in advance.

I screamed and closed the door. What else you gonna do?? Maybugs, the locals called them. They are like little whirring black barrels in flight.
  11. an opinion - these hapless animals are not being killed/mutilated by the same person, moving from Shepperton to Peckham, this is a network of people in their own locality. This is a terrorist at work. Why else would anyone kill a cat in Silvester Road then carry it home to Rodwell Road, and not leave it where it was slain. And fox cubs. It is likely that there is a DarkWeb site for catslayers, most likely with photographs.

  13. Can anyone advise, please, the best route into Whitehall on Saturday to watch the procession, bearing in mind that we will have a 3yo with us, although she will be on our shoulders when we are watching. Every year we say, this could be the last time, and any thoughts please on how busy it is likely to be, thank you

    helicopter

hello, thanks for mostly helpful comments. This was not a hovering helicopter, we are high up so could see it was looping clockwise around Herne Hill high above KCH and around Nunhead then Overhill Road and arou d we could check its circle over and over. The clatter of a helicopter does not bother me but this was rhythmic and repeated. However the Ovaltine worked and I awoke sweet tempered as usual !
  16. I believe/hope that blah blah meant that the EDF is irrelevant to Wandle and SC. Well We'll see won't we that's fighting talk. Raise the banner. We will not be sidelined. (do we have a banner)??

    helicopter

Is anyone still awake and can say why is there a helicopter circling as though it is on patrol? It is so noisy we closed the windows and can still hear it through curtains and double glazing. Planes do not bother me too much but this is annoying. Up now making ovaltine. sweet dreams y'all
  19. we are Wandle tenants on CPR as in a sudden desperate situation involving immediate surgery which obviously they knew about necessitating offer of small apartment. What we could not grasp was how filthy it was and had to install new toilet!! it was disgusting. The obfuscation, lies, intimidation, lies, promises, lies, harassment, lies, threats! lies, mag describing how wonderful Wandle are and new CEO who is uncontactable! and 'housing officers' with a life experience of a 12 yo and as much tact, we despaired. Do not think you will fare any better. Stay until you are offered something better. Wandle are morally deficient : fasten your seat belts it's going to be a bumpy ride. And Wandle, ceo and all, are about to be exposed. Which does not help you residents. We listened to Drivetime. Tracey Lees sounds like someone on the you know what. HH will make mincemeat of her. And hopefully will have your collective backs. This is a shocking, disgraceful situation, good luck one and all
  20. neighbwe? mean neighbours of course. its difficult sometimes from a phone on the way to work on a bus. but nothing to the stress and worry tenants here are experiencing. We are with Wandle through cruel circumstance which will clear and we will begone. Only hope SP tenants somehow are raised by this if only eventually and have a better life. This situation is shameful. I am so sorry that in this day and age we cannot help people more.
  21. Owen, cannot speak for the Solomans Passage tenants or any other Wandle Tenant apart from myself discovering blank indifference, ignore, treat with contempt. for over 18 months now. therefore can imagine the psychological mental, and emotional effect this is having/will have on settled residents intent on describing a community and now being required to disperse in some sort of illogical diaspora as though this is war time. From my own experience Wandle have : no sense or sensibility, no logical or reason, no morality and no care for tenant including no fire alarm system and no means of escape in case of fire. We do not always realise this until we are esconced. As we have an expectation of safety through landlord. This is a situation with many faces is it not, we will rally as neighbwe will not abandon you do not be afraid.
  22. To all Solomon's Passage residents - we are truly sorry to hear this shocking news. I don't believe your wider community are powerless and we will want to help. What I do find surprising is that with nearly 2,000 views on this thread, so few messages of support help or hopeful resolution. Is everyone else still in shock?
  23. Saffron, I clicked on your link and saw the date. It seems the trail has gone cold.
  24. Saffron, shocking though this news is, it is about 6 weeks old.
  25. pollyanna you have an oven that is 15 years old? is it still efficent? we have a 3 yo very expensive slide in all electric cooker and if we could pay someone to come, slide it forward, clean it properly, we would happily pay 100?? but unfortunamy most firms charge by the oven
