  1. I in some part actually agree with what Lenk said. I was born in Tulse Hill, lived in Norwood, Brixton and Herne Hill and have lived in ED for the last 20yrs. I was around during the riots and through the Maggie years and i do believe that we are still trying to put right the wrongs that she and her government inflicted, but i also think that there are other reasons aswell. Absent Fathers and a lack of male role models for boys in particular being one.
  2. Well the police should concern themselves with minor crime because those responsible will take the view that crime does pay and go on to greater levels of crime. Anyway it depends on one's view of what is minor and what is not. If the crime is that minor then chances are it is not reported in the first place.
  3. When bad things happen we are all quick to jump on the forum and talk about it and give opinions, and that is the right thing to do, but as a community we can all do a bit more. Become involved in neighbourhood watch schemes. Get to know our neighbours and their children. Be that little bit more vigilant to the activities of suspicious characters and report things to the police. If the police are aware that these things are being noted by the general public then they may be more likely to respond. If you report something then take the name of the officer you reported it to, ask what they are going to do about it, even for the smallest crime get a crime number and follow it up. Certain areas do have spates of incidents. A few years back Dulwich Village seemed to the target for a spate of muggings on lone women during the quiet times in the day. Seems like it is our turn at the moment.
  4. So glad to have read this post and and the advice given. I have a child starting at Kingsdale in September and was wondering how he would get to school. At the meeting with the deputy head i did mention the overcrowding on the p13. Any alternative route is worth a mention and gratefully recieved.

That is part of my point. The secondary schools are less open than Primary schools. There should be a regular dialogue between school and parent and any lack of communication by the parents flagged up. Once a child enters Secondary they should not be viewed as anything less than a child albeit an older child, but still a child.
  6. Surely these kids are known to their teachers in school and the school should be feeding back to parents any concerns and for that matter the police. When children enter the secondary school system the school should have a partnership with the parent/parents ('every Child Matters)and should insist on parent feedback. I can't imagine that any parent just doesn't care what their child is doing, and hasn't worried that they would get that knock on the door saying their child has been involved in an 'incident'
  7. I hope that everyone involved in this incident is ok. Even being a witness to a violent incident can be traumatic. I would not like to speculate what the catalyst or motive for this incident may have been, but am sure the Police will be thorough in their investigation. Given the success of Barry Station Manager on this forum, would it not be a good idea for the Local police Station to adopt a similar stance and have a person who we can ask questions too and get some sort of reassuring response.
  8. peckham Rye Park and ajoining common are lovely open spaces. The park has had lots of money spent on it and is a great place to walk and picnic. It is well used by local families, dog walkers (majority responsible cleaning up after their dogs),kids playing football and people jogging. I prefer Peckham Rye Park to Dulwich Park which always feels a bit claustrophobic.
  9. Why the low slung jeans with their arses hanging out the back? Bad look
  10. Good on you. Always better to be safe than sorry.
  11. Leonardo Da Vinci and one of those Egyptian gods like Isis or Horus. Byron would be pretty cool to meet.
  12. Going back some 35 years we lived on Pymers Mead, west dulwich. We used to chalk on the pavements of the Estate, drawings, coded messages, hide ans seek games. Things that kids do. Our immediate neighbours came round once with a bucket and suggested that we clean it all off. My mum went into a rage and told them that if they didn't like it they should clean it themselves. All the house's had the living room on the second floor so that all the living rooms looked onto each neighbours patio. My brother to get them back chalked a huge penis on the patio. No neighbour could look out of their window without seeing it. The offended neighbours came round to insist that it be removed. My mum refused. It did rain a few days later and the chalk image vanished.
  13. Yeah, we are sending out bad vibes to whoever did it. The damage to the car is always more of an expense than anything stolen not to mention the hassle.
  14. I in no way support the death penalty. It is inhumane to kill another person whatever the justification. The two individuals that carried out this hideous crime will stay in prison for a very long time and will hopefully die in prison. My thoughts go out to the parents of the victims. No one should loose a child, let alone in such a horrible way. They may have seen those who murdered their children sent to prison but they too will serve a life sentance.
  15. They sound like a right shower of shite. I hope the two responsible for these terrible crimes rot in prison.
  16. I was once a holiday rep in Greece for a very short while. Among my list of disasters was the airport transfer. The coach driver got lost on the various pick ups. On the way to the airport (once we had found everyone) the hold door opened and all the suitecases fell out down a steep embankment. Everyone was panicking that they would miss their flights. I reassured them that they would get their flights. We arrived at the airport 3 hrs later than we should have and most on my coach did infact miss their flight. The company was called SunMed. They were based in Forest Hill. Shortly after i left the company went bust.
  17. it's a sad story really but i had to laugh. 80 year old who kept her mum in a deep freeze for 30 years. Quote 'A post-mortem had to be delayed until tomorrow because the body had not fully defrosted'

  19. Sorry if it has been previously mentioned -But when you are in a queue and the person behind stands so close that they are actually touching you. As though they beleive that someone will sneak into the space inbetween or they may get to the front a nano second sooner. The worst offenders are in air port check in queues. They push their suitcase so close that the case rams into your heels.

  21. I too remember the above. Ray and his mum at the wool/card shop. They moved to the Isle of Wight. The Moore Park Hotel was my local for a short while until I moved further down Forest Hill Rd and then it was the Herne (Jack and Vera). The bakers on Forest Hill Rd was baking all night. A hot loaf after a night out. I never actually went myself but in the 70's the cinema on Grove Vale (block of flats now opposit the Texaco Petrol station) had a Guru who would talk love and peace and buddist philosophy. Don't forget that iconic night spot Kings on the Rye.

They are > certainly no longer a cheap option for people with > very little money. Totally agree. The Mind shop does a great job and the money raised goes to a really good cause, but surely the other point of a charity shop is that it is cheaper to buy second hand. The Mind Shop sells some clothes, video's, household items etc at only slightly less than the original shop price. St Christophers Hospice shop is closer to the essence of a charity shop.
  23. I have a tea tray that i bourght from that shop. I love a potter in second hand shops and bought things from the mens clothes shop(previously mentioned) on Lordship Lane.
  24. When there has been a car boot sale in the vacinity and all the tat that they can not sell or be bothered to take home appears in bags outside the charity shop, then i think the poor staff that have to move it out he way before they can open up and then haul it into the shop are miffed to say the least. If you want to donate then do it in shop hours or use the official charity bags that are put through the door for collection. People who leave black bin bags full of stuff that could get ruined by rain or pinched don't care.
  25. After a swim at East Dulwich baths we used to go to a sauna place on North Cross Rd and then undo all the good work with a curry. The sauna place was closed down for allegedly being a knocking shop.I was young and naive but never noticed any funny goings on.
