Family coming to London : what to do
Eliza.D replied to bouhbouh's topic in The Family Room Discussion
If you want to stay local I would suggest looking at the ruins of the Crystal Palace and then going to the small museum. It is very interesting. Check the museum opening times though. The boat trips on the Thames are always great. -
I don't often post on the forum but have read all the posts on this subject so now feel that I would like to add to the discussion. I do have a child at Kingsdale but would like to say that when he was offered a place he was also additionally offered a place at Harris EDA(being the first year entry of the new School) I would have been very happy for him to attend Harris, I even posted on here to get some views of fellow formites. One person (can't remember the name)suggested I ask my child which was his choice.Idid ask,and he said Kingsdale. He has been very happy at Kingsdale. He has friends at Harris. His friends(and the parents) are very happy with their choice. Isn't it great that there are choices for parents? I have asked my son if there has been talk of muggings on Harris boys by Kingsdale boys and his reaction was astonishment. He has heard nothing of the kind. I asked him if his friends from Harris had mentioned such incidents and again point blank no. Debi has been very fair in all her comments and any negative comments on her input is not justified. I think it is sad that this thread has taken this course because Kingsdale has done an incredible thing in turning a School you wouldn't touch with a barge pole to a School that is popular because it is a good School. Equally Harris EDA was a much needed School and is still getting the confidence of parents making Secondary School choices. I for one hope that all our Southwark Schools improve and give our children the best start they can. Lets not pitch one School against another.

I have to say that the TLF website information on buses, roads and trains is rubbish, the EDF is a far more reliable source of information. Smaller side roads are a nightmare. I live on what is normally a rat run but have seen almost no cars at all today. Saw the pizza delivery guy nearly come off his moped braking at a junction even tough he was going about 5mph. is is right to expect them to risk life and limb for a pizza.

School closures - fastest off the mark?
Eliza.D replied to silverfox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
My son is a Kingsdale pupil and he is not going today. From what I gather from the School they have a skeleton staff today. The School is open but that could change. Don't really want to send him on a hike just to be turned back when he arrives. -
Question to any historians out there. I work in the Walworth area and whilst i don't pay much attention to Rd names and buildings, recently i have been aware of lots of references to Trafalgar and The Victory. Victory House Victory School The Victory(Pub)x2 Trafalgar Avenue I was told that before the Heygate was built the Road names had more references to the battle of Trafalgar. My question, Are the names to commemorate the battle or did the Walworth area of SE London have a more significant role in the battle. It is not far from the Thames, but also not that close. Maybe it was a place that saliors lived. Just interested if anyone knows. I have discovered recently that both Bermonsey and Rotherhithe are vey interesting and worth a look around.

All of the above and also Hal David, Bernie taupin, Noel Coward, I'm sure its not easy putting a story plus sentiment into a short slot and make it go with the music. Hats off to them.

I have been asked to tell all those with young babies that Best Start for Babies is running from Rye Oak Children's Centre evry Monday morning 10-12. It is run by LLLU+ . If you havn't been yet then give it a go. I don't have much more info but am sure that the Children's Centre will be able to give more detail if you need it.

I would love the song as my mobile ring tone.

I have watched this a couple of times and am hooked, it is brilliant. It really is a feel good song it lifts the spirit and should be our world cup anthem. I can hear the terraces chanting 'Star on the shirt'. Well done to all involved. Love it.

Primary school place allocation chaos has started!
Eliza.D replied to tallgirl's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I don't know if this is useful but their is a School Preference Service. The information card say's 'Support and advice when applying for a School place'. The number is 020 7525 5211. I have every sympathy for your anger and frustration and hope it is soon resolved to your individual satisfaction. -
HOw does one find a good childminder? Desparate!
Eliza.D replied to Clarey999's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I would suggest that you speak to Childminding Network Coordinator in your area. She runs the Childminder drop in groups and can probably give you advice about those childminders in your area who have vacancies as the Direct Gov list is not always fully upto date because childminders don't always inform the FIS when thay have or don't have a vacancy. -
A slight variation on the thread but if you want to find your porn name. Take the name of your first pet and your mothers maiden name. Mine is Candy Braithwaite.

It's 70p an hour.It used to be free on a Sunday but not anymore. I have parked there many times and found it quite safe during the day, its well lit but after dark it's the walk back to the car thats not very nice.No one seems to park after the second floor. I would agree with Sean better to get bus or walk. If you go to the cinema in the evening then i would park around the surrounding Streets on the Mc Donald side of Rye Lane, approach from Bellenden Rd.

Apologises Linzg. Can i suggest that you contact Southwark Family Information Service. They can put you in touch with Early Years who will be able to advice and support you through the process of setting up a Childcare provision. They will also be able to offer training in Safeguarding and the implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

I think you should have elaborated on your thread. You make caring for other peoples children a pure financial venture. Which of course it is not. The established nurseries in the area have gained their reputations by word of mouth and the good ones are doing very well, and i guess would not want to sell.

I would just like to say that I pity any parent in this current situation having read previous threads. I had a pretty smooth infant/primary transition but I had the Secondary School dilema this time last year but every thing worked out ok. Private schools are in their own crisis with the economic climate as it is. It's a horrible situation all round. My only advice would be do what feels right for you and rest assured that where ever your child attends the teachers and staff have the children's best interest at heart.

I think i would agree the man's an ignorant pig. I would also like to say that i think Beyonce handled the situation really well. She was clearly shocked by his outburst and must have been mortified by his behaviour. One other point. Whilst the video that she won an award for was good i wouldn't go so far as to say 'probably the best video of all time'. It was three women dancing(albiet very well) shot in black and white/sepia. Have i got that right? or am i mistaken?

Darren Sutherland: South London-Based Olympic Boxer: R.I.P.
Eliza.D replied to Tony.London Suburbs's topic in The Lounge
I have to confess I have never heard of Darren Sutherland, but reading what you have said he had a glowing future ahead of him and it is very sad that at such a young age he has died. A suicide is a terrible way to loose a loved one and my deepest sympathy goes out to his family and friends who must all be feeling a deep sense of shock and bewilderment. I know they will probably not see this but there is an organisation called 'SOBS' who can support those who have had someone close to them take their own life. -

Huge thanks to all who organised and played at the street party at the top end of Upland Rd. I had a great time and listened to great live music. So much talent and a great community coming together. Thank you again. See you all next year. xxx

Travelling to and from Kingsdale School
Eliza.D replied to happyED's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I spoke to Mr Dennis yesterday at the school and he said that all children who had a bus place would be contacted by phone over the weekend to give them details of collection points and times. -
Hi Leo It was good to see your post and that you are recovering at home. I hope that your friend will make speedy and full recovery. His injuries sound awful but i'm sure he is being well cared for. Please send him our very best wishes.

Thanks for both of your comments. I will sit down today and work out a system to check what needs to be done and when. I think we just finding it all a little overwhelming at the moment.
