  2. I'm at work with the last of the Roses. What was wrong with Caramel Keg, eh? Golden Barrel sounds really dumb.
  3. The Lymond Chronicles by Dorothy Dunnett (six books really but you can't split 'em).

If you like the old lurid Pan paperbacks they have quite a few other Shutes in the the secondhand bookshop by Balham station. Leave some for me, though!

I am truly sorry to cause you such consternation Jeremy, but on this occasion it was probably too late for me to have time to buy a ticket and catch the last train :)
  9. Yes, it is indeed nice to be dropped off near your house on a dark dark night... When the buses *work* I think the door-to-door journey time isn't much more than by train once you have factored in getting to and from the station at either end and any associated faffage like ticket-buying. Sadly they don't seem to work quite so well these days :(
  10. Victorian Dad was brilliant. I also loved Top Tips - such as rolling your bedroom slippers in beaten egg and breadcrumbs and telling everyone you are wearing Findus Crispy Pancakes.
  11. I don't know what was going on last night but it took me almost two hours to get from Monument to ED. The last two 40s didn't turn up so I did a two-bus journey to Camberwell via Elephant. After half an hour and two 176s which were too full to get on I gave up and took a cab. I got home freezing and thoroughly cheesed off, only to find a letter from Southwark Council Tax informing me that according to their records I am in arrears. So much for internet banking!

  14. Oh well, if it's folded this thread is immaterial.
  15. Will there be a stall outside selling fish?

  17. Oh yes, he's definitely the thinking woman's (fictional) crumpet.
  18. I contacted TfL recently to complain about overcrowding on the buses along LL, especially on the 176 and 185. Here's the response: 'Thank you for your e-mail of October 13 concerning overcrowding on buses in the East Dulwich area. We at Transport for London (TfL) are most grateful to you for drawing the issue to our particular notice, and I am pleased to respond. To the best of the information available to me, I have to report that there are no plans currently to add buses to routes 176 and 185 in the weekday morning peaks. Please note that the peak hour service on route 185 was augmented as recently as September of last year. However, I appreciate that local circumstances can swiftly change, and also that we are witnessing growth in bus patronage throughout the network, both of which may account for the overcrowding you are experiencing. I have forwarded your comments to the department responsible for planning and instigating amendments to our bus services. Although all our services are monitored as a matter of course, we are always pleased to receive additional information from members of the public such as you. It greatly assists with our evaluations. Please be assured that your views will be taken into account when the routes concerned are next being assessed. Thank you once more for bringing the matter to the forefront of our attention. Please contact me again if you require any additional information.' Perhaps if a few more complaints are received they will actually DO something - the contact form is here if anyone is so inclined: Contact TfL Buses Now if only we could also get them to clean the buses once in a while...
