  1. That's really bad, sorry to hear about that jgray923, I'm really fed up reading about these little tw*%$s and worry that someone's gonna get hurt - they are using a knife ffs. Totally unacceptable and quite shocking really.
  2. Upmarket winemerchants with a great reputation and knowledgable staff - good luck to them! Much better than many alternatives that i can think of (amusement arcade, poundland, mobile phone etc etc.)
  3. That?s a little disingenuous Otta, there have been several fairly strong criticisms of posters like Ron70 who have been clear that they don?t think it?s acceptable. It seems that some people take more exception to those of us who dont want it and are emphatic about it being out of order and invasive to intrude on to property to rummage through others bins.
  4. Alan it's a moving film and highlights the indisputable iniquities of our world. I?ve already highlighted the plight of these people as potentially vulnerable to exploitation by unscrupulous gangs. Let me ask you a question, do you think Southwark council should give them access to the dump on the Old Kent Road? Would you be happy allowing unfettered access for immigrants to the clearing dump, creating our very own favela? If we turn a blind eye to scavenging from our bins regardless of data theft, clothing or scrap metal we also encourage unlicensed commerce in which those individuals who we purport to care about are then exploited. IF they are illegal immigrants then they shouldn?t be here and need help from the authorities (and that is another debate). And this doesn?t negate everyone?s entitlement to privacy, respect for property and security from intrusion. So those who make accusations of intolerance, meanness and lack of understanding I encourage you to think it through a little more before knee jerk ?embarrassed to live among you? reactions. Also here is a charity that helps: http://www.migranthelp.org
  5. Well, a few of us have gone in to reasons why we are "upset about it". I agree that it's not a perfect world and it's sad that people are going through bins and there are certainly more important issues to sort out. But it doesn't make it any less unacceptable because it's a minor issue in the grand scheme of things, does it? which is what I think your driving at. There is a school of thought that by getting the petty issues right you make the whole a bit better (which is how New York became a nicer place to be than it was in the eighties).
  6. Alan have you actually read this thread?

Robbin - don?t go back to the Daily Mail, stick around and have some fun, truly all life is here! re saving my space, I couldn't possibly save "my" space with a bin, which would be disrespectful to the neighbours ;-)

It's just that I > have this image of you in my head and I just had > to clear that up. robbin ☺ YOU LOON! I?ve got off street parking and the bins are on the drive way. The "scavengers" in question have to walk on to the drive to start their rummaging. This is where I had my motorbike cover pinched from and that probably does mean I?m more vexed about the whole scavengergate issue. I still don?t think it make a difference though - it?s just wrong to go through people?s bins!
  9. Thing is Otta - cle used the words to describe the sentiment that is being banded around i.e. somehow coz someone doesn't want others going through their bins on their property they are somehow uncaring (uncharitable). Semantics or he said/she said etc. doesn't change that and I hope cle is enjoying defending the position - it's eminently defendable and the criticisms come across as tosh to be honest. More sanctimonious holier than though leftish drivel ? there is another debate to be had about protecting these immigrants? from unscrupulous gangs who exploit them by getting them to do this type of scavenging!
  10. cle I agree with you and so do many others, it's obvious that it's unacceptable behaviour and perhaps those accusing you of being uncharitable don't respect other peoples property either. I certainly wouldn't accept stranger rifling through my bins on my proerty and have reportd it to the police. Regarding asking them what they are doing they have made it clear that they dont speak english.
  11. So did I :-)
  12. SJ: 1. Do I think I can walk around London with impunity - (I think thats what you mean right?) Impunity: exemption from punishment or freedom from the injurious consequences of an action Yes I do. I'm not in a hurry to walk down Rye Lane at midnight on a Saturday night but generally, yes, I expect to go about my normal business with impunity. 2. "Jesus. Look who in arguing with". I dont know what you mean SJ, elaborate please? you dont know me, I'm curious????
  13. So we saying our society is so bad that you can't risk using a phone in a public place for fear of it being forcibly taken from you and that this is such a common occurrence that you can't reasonably expect to be protected by the law? And then we wonder why people get vexed hearing about a mugger who nearly gets caught and our reaction is, but it?s only a phone and you didn?t get hurt so it?s not so bad! Ho hum?.
  14. Well, yes, there is. That is if your satisfied that the application of the law in London is effective. In pratice I'm not sure that you would get your collar felt if you had used reasonable force to apprehend the perp (perhaps not running him over). Then again if you were being judged by some on this forum you would probably get a tougher sentence than the mugger.
  15. I know El Pibe. No excuses, perhaps it's all this talk of justified retribution. I'd much prefer the old bill to deal with it..whoops there I go again, sorry! Let's get back to consequences and responsibility for our fellow citizens etc.
  16. And the bloke what done it deserved a slap so the next daughter what gets mugged for her phone by the same geezer might not have to coz he would have been taught a lesson.. thats what..innit..ffs
  17. StraferJack, the young lady who was mugged on Sunday was someone?s daughter and if you were her Dad perhaps you might feel differently about "going all The Professionals" and indeed "then we would see some ugliness". That?s the point; most of us or our family?s have had bad experiences with muggers, thieves, burglars etc. without anything really being done, that?s why you get the reactions that you are so unhappy about. You call it nonsense, I call it taking action and I'm glad that those people did, they should be commended, it's just a shame the **** got away. If you want a good example of nonsense check out the way that the law is applied in the courts dealing with twats like this - maybe then you'd be a little more animated about criminals getting a free pass - regardless of wether it's just "over a phone".
  18. I say again - What about those poor people depending on that phone being stolen! As we speak there are desperate people dependent upon which that phones income? Who are going to support their family values!
  19. But Bob, spare a thought for the phone shops down Rye lane who would suffer dramatic reductions on profit margins if care free youngsters are prevented from violently mugging people for phones and selling them to those responsible businesses, that vital plethora of second hand technology boothes. We must remember there is a whole stolen phone eco system upon which many of our precious citizens depend to fund a balanced diet, education, a roof and err(oh sorry I mean crack and spliff obvs)
  20. Dont worry Strafer Jack, he didn't get slapped, run over or molested in any way - he's free to try it all over again and I'm sure his caring parents were pleased to see him when he got home on Sunday evening for his tea.
  21. Either one would have been quite satisfying to be honest, if he was carrying a knife then runing him over would be safer, either way my first thoughts are not "poor little kid, doing some bad things for a while" I think that we should see more public spirited civic actions like these to be honest - people might feel a bit safer on the streets then. Oh! and making him eat the phone might have been another option.
