There are not many houses in this road, but there are several owned by black African families. Likewise there are roads in East Dulwich with fewer or more black/white people. The difference is money.

That is a very good point Amelie. Unfortunately that will make the third (no, fourth!) letter of outrage I need to draft this week. I've just finished one to Virgin about the Thursday morning train to Carlisle. Then there's the one to my mobile phone operator (who failed to fix a problem for 15 months). Then there's the Carlisle-Whitehaven train operator (Northern - appalling conditions as only one carriage on train). Then there's my incompetent insurer, who assures me he will do something, and then a letter arrives two weeks later showing they understood not a damn thing; going since December. You get my drift. I could do with some kind of letter of outrage template, with appropriate paragraphs to be deleted/modified: call centre menu trees; lateness; overcrowding; failure to respond; failure to resolve; failure to do the thing they promised; failure of their 'technical' team to know anything technical; facile excuses; failure to deliver on charter promises; illiteracy; misrepresentation; economy with the truth...

There was some activity around the back a couple of weeks ago. Not much though.

The planning application for eight flats (up from 6) on what was the back garden of a house at 379 Upland Road (Lordship Lane end) goes to the Dulwich Community Council meeting date: 3 July 08 time: 7pm venue: Herne Hill Baptist Church, Half Moon Lane, Herne Hill SE24 9HU (is this even *in* Dulwich? Why not somewhere in the neighbourhood?) I objected to the application, but I cannot attend this meeting. The report from the Council planning people is a whitewash. It's totally pro the development, despite the fact that the planned development contravenes official guidelines e.g. UDP density guideline for this area is 200-450 hr/ha, but this development is 473 hr/ha. I feel that my views expressed in my objection have not been fairly represented in the planning department's report e.g. I was adamant about over-development of the site, but nowhere does the four line summary of my objections state this or anything similar; nor does the report's section on Density and Residential Amenity (section 5.4) mention this fact. A convenient omission, considering even they admit that the development is over-dense according to the official guidelines. I'm quite angry about my views and objections being conveniently misrepresented in probably the only document the decision-makers will see (the planning department's 6-side summary of the case and recommendation). There have been several other objections, which is presumably why it's going to the DCC. I'd be very interested in speaking to anyone who intends to attend this meeting, or hearing any views from anyone on this.

I was coming from central London in a taxi on Friday night (approx 11.15) when we were brought to a sudden standstill on Camberwell New Road by umpteen police officers armed with these things http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heckler_%26_Koch_MP5 (I think) running about the road and pointing their firearms in rather uncomfortable directions. (Lots of police vehicles in evidence too.) Anybody know what was going on? It doesn't help my case persuading taxi drivers to head South when these kinds of things happen. (These days, I get in the taxi before telling them where I'm going, just so they can't make their excuses and drive away.)

Same here, but I confess I've never been looking and probably have my head - and eyes - in the clouds.

Cock a doodle d'oh; anyone else being woken by a cockerel?
louisiana replied to Ant's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
In Cuba this year we noticed that just about everyone had a cockerel (and often a pig or two) as well as hens: even government ministries and major research centres. I suspect we may be seeing more of this around here as our fragile 'civilisation' disintegrates (which I think it will do in the not too distant future). -
And what with Glastonbury being next week, I'm sure some will not get a bag

Live in East Dulwich and work in .....?????????
louisiana replied to ratty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
East Dulwich. 3 minutes via kitchen for coffee. Except when it's a trip elsewhere (Munich and Paris last week: was caught up in transport hell at both Paris and UK ends of the Bush visit - all flights to-from Heathow delayed by *practising for Bush's visit*) -
The worst thing I ever forgot (on a train or not)
louisiana replied to snoozequeen1's topic in The Lounge
I once forgot my passport, cash, cards and everything of value, in a bag at a bus stop in Jerusalem outside a museum. I was 18 at the time and was due to be in the coutry for three months. Since then, many things: last week I went out and down the road in my slippers... -

I popped in today and walked away with seven slices of house and classic disco, mostly on 12". The disorganisation initially floored me, but is actually quite fun for browsing if you have browsing time. John has no mobile signal and internet in that basement at present, so I'm sure he'd welcome any advice on getting comms sorted quickly and cheaply. It's been a good day: I also acquired an Asus Eee from this forum this afternoon.

In a hotel. Not in ED, mind. Fresh food, reshly prepared have nothing to do with good/bad hygiene.

Cat Epidemic (stop them going in my garden)
louisiana replied to Mabel's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Ms B Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Make sure you have no bare soil, sand or gravel - > if they can't scrape it up to cover their poos, > they won't go there. Um, I get cats that come into my garden and poo (a) in the middle of the lawn and (b) on the slate in front of my front door. In other words, nowhere near loose material. -
I know there've been some posts recently here about LL station. So just to point out that you can see Pissaro's painting of LL station at the recently opened Art in the Age of Steam show at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool. This was apparently the earliest known painting with a rail theme by any of the Impressionists. The painting shows the station surrounded by countryside.

What shade of green is it?

Les Djinns (Trentemoller remix) by Djuna Sound System and In White Rooms by Booka Shade. The DJ down at Goose green today was getting into quite a house and techno groove by the end.

Much better than the buses that had the 'the doors will be opening soon - the doors are about to open - doors opening' lark. Now that really did grate.
