Well the Beeb has an obligation to provide a wide range of radio formats and cannot bill the radio listeners for it. That is public service. Sky doesn't do it.

Man stabbed to death near East Dulwich station
louisiana replied to louisiana's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Ma, his street was given in the police statement and is already being reproduced on other websites as of yesterday, so I don't think not pasting the police statement here would make much difference, though to me it does not seem a sensible thing for the police to have done given the circumstances. -

Those are the words of the poster, Alec John Moore, talking about whether he should be concerned or not, not the BBC, so I'm a little mystified about how that should be interpreted as a black mark against the BBC. There are many possible scenarios, going from individual quiet revolutions Portugal-style, through to Islamist takeovers across a series of states, via oil at $200, ?300 or more (which pretty much leads to shut-down of the Western economies). I think some countries may go down the former route but surely it is of interest to hear informed views about what is going on on the streets, and the likelihood of different scenarios along a wide spectrum? I'm not exactly surprised that the Israeli media is reporting extensive continuing support for Mubarak among Israeli decision-makers, with criticism of the US and Obama for failing to continue to support him. The Israelis are perhaps the most "worried" of all, with lots of talk about Islamist takeover. Scaremongering in my books. I'd agree with Alec that the Beeb is giving a lot of time to a good range of extensive analysis on current developments, some of them pretty sophisticated. Really liked the Fulbright guy this morning at 8am talking about why Egyptian soldiers might not support Mubarak in practice. Another commentator (academic) compares Tunisia with fall of Berlin wall... > > In regards to the Israeli coverage I think it was > the coverage of the incident with the ship coming > into Gaza.

Well, it does have the word 'irrational' in the title. :)

Nubian, you're right about this not being new, though it's relatively recently that such young people have become both victims and perpetrators of this kind of violence to this extent. And yes, this kind of thing has happened in the area before. A couple of years ago, I by chance came across David Fergus (later aka Davidstar Royal King) at a road crossing in Crystal Palace. I then spent 30 minutes talking with him (or rather listening to him) but found it difficult to take my eyes from his face and head. In 1994 he was shot in the back of the head at point-blank range with a sawn-off shotgun as he came out of a disco at the youth club on Albrighton Road, only a few hundred feet from Dulwich Hamlet FC. He was 23 and already had a promising career as a boxer. Half his head is a mess, he lost an eye, and he walks slowly and with difficulty, but it's amazing he came out of that alive. Today David spends his life talking to young people about the dangers of gangs and weapons which is why he was in CP that day. He's an amazing guy. The teenager responsible for shooting him was never caught. -

For example, I've noticed a > strong anti- Israeli, pro Palestinian sentiment > over the years. I've spent some time in Israel and the occupied territories so I take some interest in these areas, plus I listen to BBC radio every day of my life, but I can't say I've noticed the BBC is "especially biased". I find programmes such as From Our Own Correspondent very informative and balanced. Can you point to any particular broadcast? We all come to where we are with a set of experiences that predisposes us to particular views, so... > > It seems your comment above even proves my point > -'trying to get a sense of how worried we should > be about destabilisation in the Middle East, for > instance'. I can't see how that statement proves any such point. Surely 'trying to get a sense' is what people are doing when they listen to/watch/read the media. Everyone.

Chicken gone bad in Plough Sainsbos
louisiana replied to benjaminty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
And lest anyone think that this is a Sainbury's issue... I once bought two fresh chickens from Tesco in Pimlico (Christmas Eve) and they were both green/blue within 12 hours. Really nasty. Returned the birds to the shop, of course (after Christmas, by which time they were totally rank) but the staff at Tesco didn't seem at all bothered. -

You have 8 postings listed on EDF since you joined. Eight. Five of those eight are currently displayed (the others perhaps have been deleted by you or someone else?). *All* those five posts are on this thread, which I started on Saturday morning. So I cannot see any posts you have made on any other subject. (Compare and contrast: many other posters here have hundreds or thousands of postings on hundreds of subjects over years.) -
James: useful to know (for the borough) would be: - children in care at any given time (average/trend and indicative ages so maybe by age group) - number of children adopted each year - number of children in foster care each year (counted in the 'in care' stats?) Adoption can be brilliant for kids, and foster care also. What is rarely brilliant is living in some LA home or a procession of LA homes. Children need a family.

UK economy shrunk by 0.5% at end of 2010
louisiana replied to wjfox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
"Without growth, there would not be a way of paying that interest." I should of course also said that inflation will also reduce any amount owed in real terms. So in a way governments quite like inflation because they always owe money and inflation will reduce in real terms what they owe. So growth and inflation are the sine qua non of government debt. Though governments will always deny liking inflation; just so they don't appear to be real bastards (anti-saver etc.) -

I would be really surprised if *anyone* at a Sainsbury's Local was expert in any aspect of meat. They are basically shelf-stackers. So, a recipe for disaster? Why not visit the very nice (and reasonably priced) butcher just across the road? -

That is staggering. But the way we are going unless something serious happens to stop it. -

DJKQ, I'm referring to cases where the media first report that the stabbing or whatever is part of some gang rivalry then it turns out that the individual murdered was (a) possible victim of mistaken identity (completely unknown to perpetrator) or (b) chance encounter in the street, on the bus etc. (perpetrator goes apeshit, victim could have been anyone). In other words the media attributes to gang culture attacks which as (as far as the victim is concerned) are random happenings. -

You DO need a TV licence if you watch LIVE content on iplayer (ie at time of TV broadcast)as I stated above. Not if only watch catch-up. The first time you watch LIVE content on iplayer this will be pointed out to you on screen. In other words: - broadcast/live (whatever medium): licence required - narrowcast e.g. catch-up: no licence required

As yet we know nothing of the circumstances let alone whether this was anything to do with 'local gang culture'. Such events all too frequently get blamed on gang rivalries when they are nothing of the sort. What I am aware of is that a lot more kids seem to carry weapons than ever happened in my youth. They often claim it is for self defence. But carrying a weapon will lead to the weapon being used, and whoever it is used against (someone else or the carrier) it's going to be bad news. There really must be a change in culture and behaviour on this. Many years ago (1980s) my first ever jury service case was a youth club stabbing. In these cases it's difficult for justice to be done: the jury is faced by a mass of contradictory 'evidence' from dozens of teens (plus then there are all those who are too frightened to give evidence). Teens must stop carrying weapons. Period. I don't know how that is going to be achieved but unless that happens we really are on a downward spiral. -
The licence fee pays for all BBC services and channels, offline and online (and now will include the World Service too, previously paid for by the FCO). A licence is not required for catch-up services/narrowcasting, but only for when a programme is broadcast (transmitted live on TV and simultaneously via iplayer etc.).

GDP is large both in my terms and in nation state terms. Even a banker might say the number is large. 0.5% of that is a not insignificant sum, whether you are comparing that to average earnings, banker bonuses or FTSE100 profits. As a percentage it's also an important figure when comparing to (normal) trend direction and quantum. A big movement in the 'wrong' direction. (That assumes accuracy: my experience of compiling govt survey stats is that there's quite a margin of error.) -
Following on from Pickle's response, I think many people in the pilot extension area (December) don't know they are. Some of us got a leaflet in December saying a pilot was starting in October. So it was widely ignored. And while the leaflet gives the collection day, it doesn't mention anywhere that the day has changed. So taking that together (wrong month and 'wrong' day of week), I think many have just ignored the leaflet and continued as before. Hence all the recycling boxes (and blue bags) put out on the wrong day all along the street. And when their recycling box is still full when they get back from work, people just think the bin men have failed to show up.

According to one of the traders, Sainbury's at the Plough has been hit twice recently (not once). There's also been a theft or attempted theft of cash box from a trader who was going to the bank. And several attempts to break in to another shop, with intruder on last occasion trying to disable CCTV by cutting through cables to the building... The verdict from one trader is that since Sainsbury's Local has opened attention seems to have been drawn to the area (more people about but unfortunately less trade for the traders other than Sainsbury's) and in their view there's been a sharp upswing in offences or attempted offences (including attacks on the cash machine).
