9/11 - Have we learned anything?
louisiana replied to DJKillaQueen's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Invasion of Iraq was nothing to do with 9/11, though it was billed as a war on terror, whatever that is. Iraq was at least in part about oil. There's a brilliant documentary about the history on this and how the US government story changed as the US public failed to respond to the need for a war for oil (with footage of the changing story, as I recall). I'll try and find the link. Israel will also be in any Middle East story. Magpie: how have any actions taken since 9/11 prevented anything? What actions, and what have they prevented? -
They don't come across as exactly milk-drinking, celery-crunching types.

What's the other 5%? Watching paint dry? :)

I wonder whether Aquarius Moon has anything to say about non-vegan rats... Or do rats have an 'our furry friends' dispensation?

Pope faces protests and apathy on visit to Britain

Jerusalem is not a hymn and is banned in many churches. Blake was strongly against organised religion, and was tried for making seditious statements against the head of the Church of England. But he did see angels (here on the Rye) and I think also thought that angels spoke to him. But then he was a bit potty. I see the poem as an appeal to the people to tell the truth of the horrors they see in the mills, collieries etc. to enable society to move forward. Blake wants to be taken to a heavenly place (in that chariot of fire) and removed from the work of the devil, which is what he could see developing around and about in London. All a bit pastoral-mystical. -
Viruses? What are they? :)

I moved from PC to Mac 3 years ago. I now avoid PC if I can. PCs just drive me mad now with all the hanging around waiting. I have not found problems with document files: Word, PowerPoint, Excel all fine, for example. Only one tiny niggle in a complex Excel s/sheet where someone decided to build a naff macro that didn't transfer correctly, three yeas ago. You can use the same external drive on both a Mac and a PC. I have Parallels installed to be able to run Windows stuff (there are other similar products out there) but I've found I've never needed to use it. If you need any specialist applications, check they are available for Mac (they often are these days). Sometimes Mac users get a better deal e.g. SnagIt (which I use a lot) is paid for on PC but free for Mac version; Camtasia is much cheaper on Mac than PC. A Mac will be more expensive. But it's a great machine that you will probably become quite attached to. And if anything does go wrong (which happened once), the Apple Store people can be amazing on turnaround (e.g. drop off machine Friday night, pick it up fixed Saturday lunchtime.) I've kept my PCs as back-up, but that's all they are.

Perhaps we should all be banned from spending time in our homes, given that a huge proportion of A&E is (I believe - correct me if I'm wrong) treating people who've had accidents at home.... Isn't Hull a bit of a special case? Like, full of nutters?

Though I suppose you might argue that Rosie's landlord had placed her into a state of suspended animation while the painting works were proceeding, eh?

Whenever I see the word W**F, my poor brain unfortunately interprets this as What The F**k. Is there a cure?

Interesting. No, a process of deduction. If she has not seen any paint slapped on, that kind of suggests she was not around when it happened, non?

But it might be wise to call in the professionals, rather than DIY, in urban areas.

"If that was the case > then the landlord should certainly take care of > it." No. It is down to the tenancy agreement. The tenancy agreement may say that Rosie is responsible for it all, regardless. Unlike some other European countries, there is no standard tenancy agreement in the UK.

Oh and apologies if my typo > offended you *raises eyes to heavens*. RosieH can speak for herself regarding when painting was done, but she does say that she has no idea on the paint, which seems to suggest that no painting has been done since she took over the tenancy ??

edcam, the flat was clearly not painted before this tenant took up occupation. Responsibilities will be completely down to the landlord (I have been one) and contract. You say "problems cause (sic) by tenants". Well it's not clear which tenants, is it, because the flat clearly hasn't been painted between tenancies. IOW, you are talking out of your hind end.

ED is of course the best kept secret in London. Just don't tell anyone else, eh? :)

As melbourne groover says, sugar soap (DIY shop) is your first port of call. This will get rid of an incredible amount of grime. In my siting room, it's been removing 70-yr-old grime from original fire surround. Then, with what is left, try a *sample* paint pot or two. They are cheap (?2.50 or so). H White and Son on Brockley Rise (going towards F Hill) can also sort out just about any colour of anything with their amazing paint mixing machines. But check your contract first. It may be that your landlord should be sorting it out.

The Dulwich Estate would like to hand over the site to a property developer to develop a leisure centre, which would certainly help to fill the Estate's coffers. The property developer in question has been Citygrove Securities, which has a subsidiary Dulwich Leisure Ltd. You can see a portfolio of Citygrove Securities developments here: http://www.citygrove.com/portfolio.html -
I've used this junction quite a few times over the last couple of weeks, as a car passenger, as a van passenger, as a cyclist, and as a pedestrian. I live within 0.5 miles of the junction. I have found the lights useful in getting across FH Rd on all of these occasions. This morning, for example, they allowed me to get across the road to the doctors' surgery without taking my life in my hands (oh the irony). Yesterday evening, they allowed out car to easily cross FH Rd and do the same on our return, when picking up items advertised on EDF. And the same for when we've been picking up building materials. This morning I stood at the junction for a while and counted the number of vehicles in each direction. For example, on one change of lights, there were 6 doing the Dunstans/Colyton directions, and 9 doing the FH Rd N/S directions. This was at 12.15pm. On each occasion there were more cars waiting on FH Rd than on Dunstans/Colyton, but there were always 5+ cars waiting on Dunstans/Colyton. Numbers will no doubt vary at other times of day, but I think it's clear that there is a fair bit of traffic Dunstans/Colyton (particularly coming from Dunstans). As a pedestrian, I do also feel the lights help somewhat in supporting pedestrians crossing. It's not just the Park they are trying to get to/from, it's also the medical centre, the chemist etc. And many of those visiting the medical centre are elderly, less mobile etc. MM is speaking from the position of someone on Marmora Rd. It has to be said most people living in ED, or who use this junction, do not live on Marmora Road, and we should probably not be taking decisions on traffic based on what 'people on Marmora Road think'.

Likewise. Once or twice in a summer fine. But not a regular thing. Unless they invite you too :)

Presumably the markets hadn't "factored in" NOT too big to fail, Mick Mac?

Mick Mac Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > I dont think the markets are the last to react. I > believe they factor in the next 12-24 months. So the markets factored in Lehman's, for example? (On 22 Aug 2008 shares in Lehman closed up 5%; up 16% for the week; three weeks later Lehman's filed for Chapter 11)

"supermarket isles"? I've never been to one of those. :)

Swings and roundabouts. Foxes eat rodents, and around here that will mean rats and mice.
