Working in Finland in the New Year (for 4 months)

MP, don't the batteries die on their feet at those temperatures? Find that out after you've figured out that you can't press the camera buttons with your mits on :-S -
Working in Finland in the New Year (for 4 months)
louisiana replied to Ladymuck's topic in The Lounge
Whereabouts in Finland? Helsinki would be a lot better than somewhere upcountry like Jyv?skyl? or Oulu. And in those kinds of locations, there are also fewer English speakers. (I did resort to sign language north of Jyv?skyl?, when I had zero Finnish.) I didn't find Finnish an easy language to learn. From what I've gathered from friends and acquaintances in Finland in a range of occupations, the Finnish workplace is not particularly frenzied. (I get the same impression from a major Finnish firm I've worked with here.) And it's not particularly expensive (unlike Scandinavia) compared to here. -
burglaries in Forest Hill/East Dulwich areas
louisiana replied to concita's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Taking the number of burglaries per ward per month, for three of the relevant wards, and comparing to the number of households reported as being in each of those wards, gives an annualised figure of around 1.5-2.8% of households burgled each year depending on ward. (That would pan out at 1-2 houses being burgled in my street every year.) That's a very rough average, and of course some homes may be much more likely, and others much less likely, to be burgled, owing to location, security measures, presence/absence of owner, presence/absence of large fierce dog etc. And how is it spread geographically? We know that some burglars seem to hit in several properties in a street in succession, or in neighbouring streets.... So there's an impression that there's a lot going on, perhaps? It's difficult to avoid taking into consideration what happens in one's own street. So if you know your near neighbours have been burgled, you know there's a burglar or two that's been walking past your house and perhaps assessing it. Which does make you think. And yes, edresi10 is probably right, people want to vent. From what James said about what is classified as a burglary, it seems unclear whether some offences may be perceived as 'burglary-type' by the burgled, but defined as something else by the Met; and it may be that attempted burglaries do not count. Then there other types of home-related events (e.g. threatening person on doorstep) that perhaps meld into someone's perception of 'home invasion', but clearly do not count as burglary. So people's experience of what they see as 'threats to their home' may differ to some degree to what the stats say. -
Does any shop in the area sell these? I'd be addicted to them if only I had a regular supply. :-S

Chick peas in the pressure cooker are a doddle, so there's no reason not to buy dried. And yes, the skins do tend to flake off. I have one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/WMF-Perfect-Pressure-diameter-stainless/dp/B00008XWYR Ultra-reliable (unlike some others I've tried) and good spare parts provision.

Put it in your petrol tank?

Is it illegal to take photos in Peckham Rye station?
louisiana replied to Timster's topic in The Lounge
Lounged: because it's Peckham not Dulwich? It's not a public place, it's a private space (which is locked at night) which the public are allowed to enter at certain times and according to certain rules. Much like a shoping centre or a swimming pool building. It's not beside the point, as the owner of the space can decide the rules of play. It's probably in the bye-laws, so worth checking those out. Once upon a time BR was fairly laissez-faire, but we seem to be seeing more and more Greek-style (read: paranoid) behaviour from Those Who Must Be Obeyed these days. I wouldn't be surprised if they started arresting train spotters the way things are going. -
He was just slagging off EDF. No great loss.

The inside of the station is not a 'public place' in that sense. -

Now he's playing the moanning minnie on the West Dulwich forum... and wondering whether the same people run both :)

Yes, please do.

Thanks PeckhamRose. All encouragement gratefully received, and all ideas too. Clearly, public authorities like Southwark Council are on a learning path ;-) They may end up somewhere different to where they are right now, given current/future developments (peak oil, 'workfare' type schemes by the ConDems...). *Some* of the time we can help fix things by talking, informing and putting points of view or bringing pressure to bear. That's part of the role we see DGG having; it's often hard to achieve things when you're an individual as you often don't get listened to with any seriousness by The Powers That Be.

Some of you may be aware that there's an organisation called Dulwich Going Greener. DGG is a charity set up in 2006 to work towards a greener and more low-carbon Dulwich (SE21 and SE22). It's all about the practical green things that people can do locally. The idea for the organisation grew out of an event at the Dulwich Festival that year. The intention of this post is to establish a focus for DGG on EDF and to encourage dialogue about practical green work in Dulwich (rather than just having random DGG events posts in the Events section). You can find the DGG website at http://www.dulwichgoinggreener.org.uk/ and we're on twitter too at @dulwichgreener You can find most of our events posted to the Events section of EDF, but we also run a mailing list which you can join on the DGG website if you want to get monthly updates in your inbox. Tomorrow night (Thursday, 8pm) we've got a fab film on, Pig Business, which is the result of four years of exploration of intensive pig farming. http://www.pigbusiness.co.uk/ We're really lucky to have the film's director, Tracy Worcester, along to discuss and answer your questions. Tracy attends only a small number of screenings and is fairly busy advising UN-type institutions, so this is a bit of a coup! Check out the Events section for full info: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?6,561498 DGG is an umbrella for a range of practical local projects, which include Dulwich Vegetable Garden. DVG is a demonstrator veg garden in Dulwich Park (behind Rosebery Lodge, on Dulwich Common). It took quite a lot of effort to get the whole thing off the ground. There are now regular work days for volunteers, normally one during the week and one at the weekend (yes, the volunteers get to eat the veggies!). The next one coming up will be on Sunday 14th Nov (10.30-12.30). You can follow DVG on twitter at @DulwichDVG to find out what's coming up. There are also other really fab projects, such as the Secret Greenhouse on Half Moon Lane. Check out the DGG website for more info. Other stuff: We've been running regular environment-related films and talks upstairs at the Crown & Greyhound. The series continues. We've run a Give and Take event in conjunction with Southwark Council and Veolia, at the Francis Peak Centre in Dulwich Park (very successful) and are hoping to run some more. This is kind of like 'Freecycle in person'. We're starting a push on allotments. Southwark Council seems to be really hands off on this, and there's a massive shortage locally. Whether it's individual allotments, community allotments, community-supported agriculture or anything similar, we're interested in your experiences and ideas about what could be done. And we're also interested in hearing from you if you'd like an allotment or other growing space and can't get one. Please do contact me at dulwichgreener@gmail.com, as I'm trying to pull this one together over coming weeks. We're planning to do something pretty major as part of the Dulwich Park fair end of the Dulwich Festival in May 2011. More news on this very soon, as it's still really, really early days, but I have to confess it's going to be loads of fun. And lots more... If you'd like to get involved, do get in touch. If there's something that you'd like to see us doing which we're not doing currently, likewise. This is an interesting journey, and all contributions and thoughts are very welcome. Lou dulwichgreener@gmail.com Edited to add email address.

He he professional writer - hardly, given his tortured rants and spelling failures. I pity the poor people who have to put up with him in RL. Including those tenants.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
louisiana replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James I'm curious to know: are the two burglars in custody, or are they out on bail, on the streets to thieve again? Do we know how many burglaries they are 'alleged' to have committed? There would appear to be a number of burglaries reported in other streets in the ward in the two week period (in addition to those in surrounding streets in the next wards), so I'm interested in how the numbers stack up, how things are counted e.g. if someone breaks into a shed in my garden and steals 2 bikes, is that burglary or is it 'bike stolen'? Is an attempt counted the same as a completed offence? For example if someone breaks my fence and locks trying to get into my back garden, or if someone breaks a window and then gets scared off by my neighbour? Can you point me to any operational definitions? -
How do I stop Virgin media sending post to me?

I should try this I've never been a customer of theirs, but I reckon I've had more than 25 letters a year (for several years) from these clowns and I'm heartily sick of it I'm on every 'don't send me anything list going (MPS, the Royal Mail opt out) but they just keep on coming There is never a return envelope included -
Yet Another Crash on Barry Road - Underhill Road Junction
louisiana replied to trentk69's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I came out of Underhill onto Barry on my bicycle just after (and got off my bike and crossed as a pedestrian because all looked so messy). Wondered what was going on. It's not a good junction, but a lot of the problems are down to the people that use it and how they drive. -
