former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?

This is at foot of very steep hill, and lack of grit means we cannot do anything about the cars sliding down hill into LL (and oncoming traffic) in a completely uncontrolled fashion. Apart from pavements on the road itself. The gritter lorry has been around in last 24 hrs, but has failed to address the big issue at the foot of this hill. This bin is within College, by 20 feet (20 feet from Village ward, 40-50 feet from East Dulwich ward). -

Beat that without quoting Monty > Python I did my A levels while living in a tent on a farm (and working in a pub to support myself - until I bailed out of that when the pub manager started on a path of sexual harassment). It could be said that my parents (specifically my father) were not exactly supportive of anything, including supporting their own kids up to the end of A levels at 18. In my father's books, children were something to be used as weapons; even his own lawyer and my last headmistress called him 'bloody minded'. Once I'd moved out, my father sent my few possessions over in a van after having chopped them into tiny pieces with an axe (which he also used against a fridge bought by my mum - at 3am one night shortly before I left). My half/step brothers and half sister (from two subsequent marriages) had mostly similarly toxic childhoods. My half-sister (now 15) has been in hiding from him for four years. It has to be said: some parents are toxic. And they are not necessarily council-house dwellers (mine never went near a council house).

I'm puzzled why anyone would want a corrupt international circus, that would cost us all money, to come to town.

bellenden road/danby street - people going through bins
louisiana replied to Panda's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I did dumspter dive into a skip on LL - but only to retrieve a useful piece of wood that I could see from the other side of the road. And I don't have a van - only my little legs. And I'm certainly not selling anything! Just a local resident seeking to make as many outputs as possible become an input to something else, rather than being taken to landfill (which is a key principle of permaculture). Someone once wrote an article on the contents that flow through a skip between it being provided and picked up. In my view, if you've dumped something in a skip in the street, and someone else thinks a thing in that skip might be useful to them, fair enough. Obviously that does not include personal info - but you'd be a bit of a twit putting such stuff in a skip, methinks. That belongs in a shredder (and thence to the compost bin, or perhaps bedding for your rabbits or hamster :)). -
We have a grit bin on our road, but not all roads have AFAIK. I think we've got one because we're categorised as a high-frost-susceptible road (and we have quite steep hills). More grit bins have been rolled out this year, but unlikely to be enough to deal with these sorts of conditions.

best tactic for deploying central heating

Do the upstairs rooms have doors? Where is the bathroom/toilet? -
We (middle aged) cleared a substantial section of pavement on our road (a third of one side) before running out of grit on Wednesday. We've asked for more but none has been delivered yet. Difficult to clear without grit, owing to depth of snow up here, the road being narrower than normal (where do you put it!) and danger of creating thin sheet of ice on this steep hill, which would be worse than the powder snow. Only one or two cars have attempted to move - the second one ended up just sliding about the hill and half-blocking the road yesterday. Hope that hasn't prevented a grit delivery (the blockage was right next to our grit bin!)

Hi James What's the policy on re-filling the grit bins? We gritted one part of our pavement (steep hill) on Wednesday, ran out of grit, I called the council to get it refilled, they thought this might happen on Wed night or Thurs daytime, but it was still empty last night (Thurs night). It's difficult for people to help clearing if there's no grit - on this steep hill shovelling just ends up creating a sheet of ice (this is a high-frost road). -
Mine is around 7.2 this morning. O2, over a BT line. (I can almost see the BT exchange out of the window, just around the corner, so I should be getting the max.)

Zeban, it's quite likely that your elderly neighbours are not online, and not on this forum. I wouldn't worry about knocking on doors if you know there is someone elderly there, but probably best to employ some ground rules if you don't know them/they don't know you, to help allay any fears they might have.

Just checked the grit bin and it's still empty. I called the council yesterday to get it refilled but... On these hills, unless you grit as you clear, you're just creating a thin sheet of ice (on a very steep slope), so I won't be doing it tonight.... or until our grit bin is refilled.

I'd never work for a company that didn't allow desk workers to WFH. It's about what you achieve, not about showing your face (and wasting time doing so).

Do people think it is s good idea? Cleared and gritted - but by this morning all my good work was reversed as the snow was back up to the previous morning's level again following overnight snow.

Came back an hour ago from Aldgate/Gracechurch St. Buses fine, with 185, 176, 40 seeming to run to end of route, and DKH fine. Didn't check out trains. This morning's experience was: - 40 and 12 not running from the Library - 185 on diversion via Barry Rd - 12 only running from Peckham to Camberwell Green and hundreds of people trying to get onto buses (many more than usual) with most buses not stopping because they were full. so I ended up getting 197 down Barry Rd, 12 from the Rye to Camberwell Green (where it turned around), 45 to Elephant and 40 from there to Aldgate. All buses this side of Camberwell were moving super slow, some barely more than walking pace, and some were taking pretty odd routes and not stopping at bus stops even when they were not full. I say this only because the same may happen again tomorrow (given that snow is falling 5/10 here in Dulwich southside).

PGC, I think that is what is known as a Special Situation!

Ear-muffy-type-thingy MP Where can I get it MP???

I'm lovin' the tail on that, sandperson! :) Unfortunately, I think I'm needing those ear flaps.... and that one seems to be out of stock. Just considering how a Davy Crockett and balaclava combo might look, style-wise ;-)

Excellent, Barry. Well not excellent weather, or excellent transport (though it's quite good, considering), but excellent communications! From 'Our Bazza'! It's all about managing expectations, innit?

Very little snowing in ED all day, none at the moment.

I'm looking for a halfway decent (or even classy :)) trapper hat or similar. Any suggestions for who's doing good ones? (I realise lots of people are probably out of stock right now.)

We've cleared around 1/6 of the pavements on our road (I did a small section) and have now nearly run out of sand/grit. Have just called the council to get the grit bin refilled, and asked the chaps to check other nearby bins while they are here. I think our plan is to do one side of the road only, 'cos it's just too much work otherwise. Could do with more help, but of course many people are out at work until after dark. Our road is really icy, and cars on the steep bits haven't got a chance of getting out - wheels just spinning on steep slope - but I don't think there's any possibility of clearing the roadway of snow/ice manually. I was out in my mountain hiking boots too... Made a lot more progress than the cars up here!

This gets me even more as I'm on every list imaginable (including the PO's no unaddressed mail list) plus I have a no junk mail sticker. And *still* they stick rubbish in leaving the letterbox open. The next one I catch (tomorrow) I shall be roasting on a spit. B)
