I recommend Nigel Slater's Appetite. Everything I've tried from there has been straightforward to make and interesting, and has won plaudits. You can't say more. Also The Organic Cookbook by Carol Charlton. Everything there works, and works well. Also it doesn't make assumptions (no unobtainable ingredients, or esoteric techniques).

Egg based outrage at EDD...now quite scared
louisiana replied to bawdy-nan's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've been in a fair few times over the last four years, though I'm not a regular for the following reasons. The only person with a smile was the Spanish woman (now no longer there?) Visiting friends of staff (not buying anything) seem to take precedence (interminable discussions) over paying customers, and scowls are far too common. Too much space is given over to stock, which makes those queuing up uncomfortable - you can't move without hitting something or somebody. Sometimes you just can't move. The only things I will go in there for now are: one kind of bread and one specific type of pasta that I can't get elsewhere easily. I won't go in there on a Saturday at all. Louisiana -
Great to know, talisman. A guided tour would be excellent - I'm sure we could organise some bottles of bubbly. Louisiana

Zizzi's is somewhat worse than Pizza Express and Ask, but not as bad as Pizza Hut. Louisiana

Sorry I couldn't be there on Friday, but Mr L dragged me away to the count-ry-side. We kicked off Saturday morning cycling through a ford At Land's End in Berkshire, where I promptly fell over in a foot of water, and was nearly engulfed by the freezing waters of the river...whichever. It was cold! My hair band was washed away, but my Prada sunglasses were not snapped, thank goodness. Mr L offered to cycle back home to fetch the jag and pick me up, sodden clothes and all. But I refused the kind offer, and we instead cycled back with river in our cycling shoes, made a rapid clothes change, and spent the day walking instead. I shall not be attempting to cycle across further fast-flowing river fords in the near future. But I shall be coming along to the next EDF meet-up, as I hope will Mr L. Louisiana

I reckoned I was a red circle, but was told that I too was a blue circle. BUPA is clearly aware that there are millions of people across the land, sitting at their keyboards and bored out of their collective boxes. You should probably only worry if you believe in blue circles (something like believing in little green men).

SLP - call that journalism? If all these people can muster as news is picking up banter from a website, they are sadder even than I had thought. Actually, Marina Hyde in The Grauniad is just as bad - quoting material from political gossip websites and claiming it as her own.

That cactus has taken over. It'll be bigger than the house soon. Louisiana

There's a monkey puzzle tree on Crystal Palace Road. And palms in Peckham. The current issue of Living South reports a vineyard. What's the most exotic thing in your garden? On your road? Has anyone spotted bougainvilla? Varieties of citrus? Some young olive trees? Louisiana

Patek Philippe would be the tastier timepiece. These Claphamites have no classe. Louisiana

I'm told JAGS is not just an academic treadmill - music, theatre, art etc. also big there, and they do lots of work with local schools. But judging by the evidence of one of my neighbours, parents who send their children to such schools are relentless in getting value for money - always on the poor kids' cases about homework. I've always wanted to have a band called The Fabulous Tits ;-)

thinking about moving to East Dulwich - some questions!

Getting to NW London by picking up the Bakerloo or Jubilee at L Bridge is not bad. My hairdresser is actually in Westbourne Grove, as are several clients, and I often go to Paddington station - it's never proved a problem getting there in reasonable time. Louisiana -

They do some quite good bread (the cheese is better at The Cheese Block in my view), but staff can be extremely offhanded, and with all that STUFF they had in over Easter there wasn't enough room to swing a mouse, never mind a cat. I'm not surprised things got knocked over - it's their own fault. Louisiana -

Why not consider home schooling? A colleague of mine has always educated her sons at home - and now one has won a scholarship to Oxford! Louisiana

Mr L is trying to persuade me off to the delights of rural Berkshire, for some tip top cycling between ancient pubs this sunny weekend. I am torn (and he did come here last weekend). Louisiana

The public highway is the public highway. If she wants private parking, she needs to drive a coach and horses :-S through her front garden and drop the kerb. Or somesuch. People will be as considerate as they can - but you will also park where you can, these days. Louisiana (No longer a driver since a horrific accident in the 90s, but Mr L does park the jag outside from time to time, which tends to annoy all my neighbours who seem to think that the space in front of my house belongs to them, as I don't park on it myself)

Nero Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > You might find it a bit cheaper in Upper East > Dulwich (I just made that up. It could well > stick.) Yes, the Upper East Side :) That's where I am. Great views, very near Dulwich Park, nearish for Peckham Rye Park, near the best library, only 10 mins walk to William Rose and Moxton's. Transport options include Forest Hill (by bus), which takes you to Victoria as well as London Bridge. There's also a branch of Lloyds Bank locally, plus a (sub) post office, dry cleaners, DIY store and so on. There's never a problem parking in this street. Louisiana By that I mean past Townley Road. Hard at work gardening, cycling and boozing in ED this weekend. There was a fairly length Q outside W Rose around 1.30 today, as we wizzed past on the way to grotty garden centre to get some heavy duty gloves. And the traffic was fairly heavy on the way back too. Louisiana
