@NewWave that link doesn't work for me! Can you double check and repost? Thanks!

I work from home 4-5 days a week. I have a home office. But I like to go out sometimes in the middle of the day. Buy a coffee and a slice of cake and spend 40 minutes to an hour (max) in a cafe. What's wrong with that? If you work in an office, you have to travel to work. This means you have to leave the house, go for a little walk etc. If you are a home worker, this doesn't naturally happen. If you don't go out - say to a cafe for a quick coffee - you may end up not leaving your house for the entire day - which is not good and leaves you in a bit of a funny mood. This is why some people (like myself) go to a cafe to work. Not to stay there all day. But to leave the house for an hour. I don't understand why people are so upset about the whole laptop-in-a-cafe thing and I think perhaps some people misunderstand the intentions of home workers in cafes. My ten cents.

Do you drive a car Tarot? I hope you know that you are *FAR* more likely to be injured or even die while being in a car than in a terrorist attack. I suggest you start thinking positively - stop being a hater and try to be a bit more empathic. There are lost of people in the world right now who are running for their lives. There is no conspiracy. There are just many horrible horrible wars and conflicts going on right now in the world.

I saw a bunch of people drumming as I cycled past Peckham Rye park around 3PM today. Is that what you are referring to? Looked like an organised group of drummers doing a bit of a concert. Sounded pretty professional, as far as I could tell. I thought it was really nice - sorry to hear that some people found it a nuisance!

Weekend Postman on Crystal Palace Rd
fizzmoll replied to WrightC's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Nigello, sounds like WrightC has complained several times to the sorting office already. Could you get a cheap CCTV set up in your porch? Would that be legally ok? Maybe in that case you could record the postman being sloppy and present the sorting office with some more hard evidence? -

In terms of estate agent ratings, also check out this site: http://www.allagents.co.uk/postcode/se22/ - lots of reviews of most of the estate agents in SE22. Probably the wrong area for you, but we bought from Robert Stanford in Forest Hill and they were great. -
Switching to Internet only household - seeking advice
fizzmoll replied to apod's topic in The Lounge
Hey apod, On the virgin web site, they advertise a 100 meg broadband only offer for 33.50 per month - http://store.virginmedia.com/broadband/compare-broadband/100mb.html With BT, I think I pay ~45 pounds a month. The BT service is rock solid (fiber all the way into the house) but I think I would probably still go with Virgin if I could. They are cheaper but perhaps more importantly feel more modern in their business strategy than BT. imho. good luck with finding a good deal! -

Hey! I have a projector and a chromecast. It is amazing. Haven't used a TV or a phone for years. For broadband I use BT fiber - so unfortunately I do have a landline that I have to pay for but never use. The only reason for this is that virgin doesn't do broadband i my street. I used to have a setup with virgin about 2 years ago where i only paid for broadband - no TV, phone nothing - just the data. -
@Loz - I totally agree and I heard a programme on the radio today where they argued something like along these lines - which made sense at least to me: Benefit to cost ratios are indeed extremely hard to measure and evaluate and is not a precise science in any way - HOWEVER what conclusion can be safely be drawn from ratios of 10:1 and above is that it identifies an area which is highly likely to be interesting for further research and investigations. It's time to take cycling seriously from an economic perspective. It is still being seen as some sort of sport/hobby/kids/leisure activity but in reality it is an extremely smart and cost effective means of urban transportation. European urban areas are growing very rapidly and this problem won't go away. Cycling is here to stay. I am pretty sure that what we are seeing now is only the beginning.

This is an interesting EU report looking at the benefits of people cycling rather than using cars: http://www.ecf.com/wp-content/uploads/ECF_Economic-benefits-of-cycling-in-EU-27.pdf This report calculates an annual economic benefit of cycling in the EU-27 of at least ? 205 bn. Also, when it comes to investment in cycle related infrastructure: (from the report above) ----- A report for the UK Department of Health in 2010 concluded that "...the economic justification for investments to facilitate cycling and walking has been undervalued or not even considered in public policy decision-making. Yet, almost all of the studies report economic benefits which are highly significant, with benefit to cost ratios averaging 13:1 (UK and nonUK)." In comparison, UK government guidance on the evaluation of major projects says that a ?medium? value-for-money project will have a BCR of between 1.5 ? 2, and a ?high? value-for money project a BCR of at least 2.5. ----- London also has a massive problem with pollution ( http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/jul/15/nearly-9500-people-die-each-year-in-london-because-of-air-pollution-study ) and more people cycling could greatly contribute to a better urban environment in terms of NO2 levels for example. These are also interesting reads about long term urban planning and analysis: http://international.stockholm.se/globalassets/ovriga-bilder-och-filer/urban-mobility-strategy.pdf http://lup.lub.lu.se/luur/download?func=downloadFile&recordOId=3972511&fileOId=3972519

Cyclists v Motorists can be debated ad infinitum. However, this is also about Cyclists v Pedestrians - I personally don't think there are any excuses for a Cyclist to run into a pedestrian as they are crossing the road at a traffic light. I commute quite a bit between ED and Soho on a bike and I see this happening all the time. No excuses here bike people - I don't care if you are trying to "F***ing save the planet" - if an old lady (or indeed any pedestrian) is trying to cross the road at a traffic light, don't jump the red light!

House prices (in East Dulwich)

For great pictures, I strongly recommend getting a 10 mil lens, super wide angle. This is what estate agents often use to take compelling pictures of interiors. You can get a canon lens for under 200 pounds: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-EF-S-10-18mm-4-5-5-6-Lens/dp/B00KAQX66Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1438288354&sr=8-2&keywords=canon+10+-+22mm You probably also want to dial up the expose a few notches, making the pics look brighter. Just make it look more appealing. If you want to sell it yourself, why not make more of an effort? You are asking someone to pay A LOT of money for something - take LOTS of pictures, go the extra mile, set up a small web site to advertise it. Why stop at 5-6 pictures when you can have 20? Push it on facebook! Record a walkthrough and put on youtube. Just because it's London doesn't mean it is going to sell itself automatically. However, I do think you can do a lot more yourself in terms of marketing this - maybe something to try if you are still hesitant about estate agents? In this day and age, there are so many options, and so easy to produce high quality digital deliveries. -
What an AMAZING thread.

Scooters/motorbikes being driven down cycle paths
fizzmoll replied to nbridgeman1's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Sounds like an accident waiting to happen. A single accident with a motor bike and a child is enough for it to be a big tragedy and a potentially life changing moment for a family. What's wrong with trying to discuss this and potentially take preventative measures? -

Underhill road - what's it like?
fizzmoll replied to konradc101's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I used to live there for a couple of years, with young children and biking into Soho on a daily basis. It's a fantastic area, very quiet, leafy and lovely. Village feeling. You are close to the horniman museum and park. You are fairly far away from shops but it's not crazy. There is a newsagent on wood value for milk and last minute stuff. There is the horniman farmers market on saturdays. And forest hill road isn't a crazy way away, with a coop, post office, GP etc. We ended up doing ocado/sainsburys order for most of our food which was awesome. For the biking, yes, you will have a bit of a challenge going up that hill on the way back from work. But it's not too bad! It's short and steep, so walking up the hill only takes a minute longer (if you can swallow your pride!). Would have been much worse if it was a long stretched out elevation. When I wasn't biking, I found going on the P4 to brixton and then victoria line into London was the quickest route into Soho. But it's not a great commute. Hope this helps. Yes, you are kind of far away from railway stations, but other than that the location is pretty amazing! -
Lively dogs and little kids - Peckham Rye Park
fizzmoll replied to Coco22's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Thanks for the kind words Rahrah and HappyFamily! Most dog owners that I know and that we meet out in parks and streets are like you guys - considerate and mindful of other people (esp. children) and with well behaved and absolutely lovely dogs! Hopefully, if my son meets a couple of nice, gentle dogs, he'll be all right! :) -
Lively dogs and little kids - Peckham Rye Park
fizzmoll replied to Coco22's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Many thanks to the two guys and their dog who scared the crap out of my three year old son yesterday on Peckham Rye. The dog came out of nowhere, jumped all around my son and barked loudly. They were about the same size. The dog's two owners said to me "Don't worry, he just wants to play". Well, why are you telling *me* this? Instead, why not try to explain it to my crying three year old son? He now seems utterly terrified of all dogs. The dog then left my crying son (who clearly didn't want to "play") and ran off to another little child (sitting on a picnic blanket) and did the same thing, with the same result. Thanks, well done guys! Cheers. -
Here is some info: https://www.gov.uk/smoke-control-area-rules From the page: *Outdoor ovens, burners and barbecues* You can use outdoor barbecues, chimineas, fireplaces or pizza ovens. Any of these appliances that release smoke through a chimney of a building - eg a summerhouse - can only burn authorised fuel or must be exempt.

Someone in your circle of friends perhaps has a wood burning stove?

One thing I never understood is why estate agents don't put a QR code on those signs. So that you could just snap it with your phone and navigate straight to their web page with the relevant details. Estate agents == Luddites?

Thanks! I'm aware of this feature, I just keep forgetting to do it :)
