  1. Two trains were cancelled this morning at North Dulwich station this morning due to "staff shortage". Almost a forty minute gap in rush hour.
  2. That's a really helpful message. Anyone know where to get decent price dust sheets? I was also thinking of installing a plastic sheet style door to try to keep dust away from first floor. Anyone done that ?! I guess the message is that we should put dust sheets over everything in the living room during the day.
  3. I just can't see how any bus/coach/lorry will be able to turn left from Townley road onto EDG given the size of the build out that is now taking shape. Has the plan changed?
  4. We pay ?11 per hour
  5. I want to add my support to Terry McGinley. He came around at short notice and helped us out with our electrics which had gone catastrophically wrong. Was very reasonable on price, too. Would use again
  6. Guy came to my door today, saying he was a parent and trying to get a football team off the ground on a Sunday in Dulwich Park. The sheet said Southwark Rangers. He then asked for a contribution to get some kit. Lots of signatures so I gave ?4, although I thought it was slightly suspicious. But he talked a good game. Red hair and clipboard. I guess we will find out if it was a scam soon enough as he said he would send info. Anyone heard of Southwark Rangers?
  7. We are thinking of using this company and wondered if anyone had used them and had any feedback. Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks a lot.
  8. Must say that we found Herne a Hill to be a fantastic school and don't recognise some of those earlier comments. Teaching is excellent and we found it be a very kind, supportive and stimulating place. There is a broad mix of kids and they all end up going to good schools. We didn't have a huge amount of homework, for what it's worth. Of course they have to prepare them for 7+ but genuinely think the teachers just try to get the best out of each child. We were very happy.
  9. Agree with all of above. The earlier you go, the better. If you drive, get the first slot of the day and beat the traffic. Definitely take own food. It is a superb day out.
  10. Watching this thread with interest. We'd like one, too.
  11. On the website of Dulwich and Herne Hill Safe Routes to School, it says there is a 3pm meeting this Saturday at St Barnabas Hall to discuss "ongoing local confusion and concern" surrounding these plans. Seems like a good chance to find out why they are supporting this particular plan in first place as opposed to original, less contentious, options and to make them aware of what local parents think about impact of no right hand turn.
  12. Good post by Slarti. On current EDG junction plans, the build out from pavement on Townley Road looks like it will mean coaches physically unable to turn left into EDG. So where will they all go ? Calton Avenue!
  13. For what it's worth we pay our au pair an extra ?8 an hour for any childcare duties in addition to hours as an au pair. We pay her ?120 a week for 20-25 hours. We think it seems fair given the responsibilities involved. Hope that helps!
  14. There appears to be a real problem at this sorting office at the moment. They couldn't find a parcel that had been returned there for collection as we weren't in. One of our postie's told us staff shortages had created a real back log of parcels etc and that some mail was taking days to get delivered. He very kindly went and found our parcel and dropped it off on his route which was incredibly kind of him. Sounds a bit chaotic. Just passing this on in case other people are having problems or wondering where there post is!
  15. While some of the measure appear sensible, we are totally against a no right turn. Where's the analysis to prove that a) it is necessary b) where all the traffic is going to go? Would be interesting to know what our local councillors stand is on this.
  16. Great letter. Question is, why has the school reportedly had this asset for the last nine years and only now appointing a swimming coach while giving this fantastic team just a few weeks notice after the term is underway? It seems very unprofessional and harsh, letting down lots of local kids in the process.
  17. Thanks for answers. Wasn't sure if local charity shops took crockery. Mission accomplished!
  18. Just wondering if anyone knows where I can donate some crockery - assorted plates, bowls, cups and saucers from a set - which we know longer need? Thanks very much!
  19. This may sound a bit mad, but I've been using magnesium oil spray on my legs and I have stopped getting restless legs during the night. It worked for me and thought I'd pass this on.
  20. That won't work. We have exactly the same problem and can't find a neat solution. Would be interested in any ideas, too. We bought a cheap food bag which was zipped and they still managed to get in!
  21. I was thinking about shutters but haven't found the time or money to press the go button. I have a colleague who researched this thoroughly. He said that companies use the same sourcing in the sense that the shutters all come from China. That's why it takes at least eight weeks for the shutters to arrive. Here's what he told me: " One city in China makes 80% of the world?s plantation shutters ? probably because they?re right next to an enormous forest of bass wood, which is what they?re made from, a durable, lightweight and thermodynamically stable wood ie. It won?t contract or expand as the temperature changes in your room/house." It makes sense to get at least three quotes. A bigger company which does a lot of marketing needs to recoup those expenses, for instance. I would definitely shop around and get recommendations.
  22. After much agonising, we've had our front garden done recently by London Landscaping Company. Billy is the boss. The work was first class and we are really pleased. PM me if you want to take a look. We looked long and hard at replacing our worn Victorian tiled path but it is very expensive to do. We went for a cheaper option and don't regret it.
