Primary school appeals process - help
malcol replied to prdarling's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Possibly it was compiled before the bulge class was agreed or perhaps it makes it easier to stick with the normal 90 places so as not to confuse people who may think that 120 is their normal intake amount. I can assure you though that this academic year (09/10) they took in 4 classes amounting to 120 children and next year it will be 3 classes. -
Primary school appeals process - help
malcol replied to prdarling's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Just to confirm, Goodrich actually took in 4 classes last year (two in September and two for the January in take) so they had 120 reception children (09/10). This year they won't have a bulge class but will still be taking their usual 90 children (3 classes) again spread over two start times (September and January). -
Goodrich School took on a bulge class last year and as far as I can tell it really hasn't had a negative impact on the school or the children. This year Goodrich has close to 120 pupils in its reception year. My son is in Reception at Goodrich and loves it. He feels safe and secure and is not even aware that he attends a school with the largest primary school role in Southwark! If taking on an extra class for Heber means that more local children are provided with a local school then the community as a whole should support this and the school! Good luck to you all with securing a place locally. M

It's odd this notion that 3 is bad number...middle child syndrome and all that. I am one of two as is my husband and we both wanted more than two as we could see the down side of being just 'one of two'. Personally I think the number of children you have and their future childhood experience is much more to do with the parenting and love that the child/children experience than how many siblings they may or may not have.

What makes you think it going to rain during our Easter bank holidays...?!?!?!?!

Done at 3. Time, money, space do not feature in my need/wish to stop I just can't bare the idea of being pregnant again!!

I agree with the previous posters, what more can the school do? They have sent very stern letters out to the whole school and they have stood outside on various mornings but to be honest it hasn't worked and should they really have to police the parents in this way? It's about time parents started to make a stand and confront other parents about their behaviour. It's no good having a moan on this forum. I have previously tackled a parent who nearly reversed into my child whilst we were crossing the road. The parent hardly batted an eyelid but it left me feeling guilty about any consequences it may have on my kid in the playground later on (her child was older and much bigger). Individually tackling this problem will probably just lead to heated arguments at an already fractious time of the morning. Collective action is needed. Any ideas?

My kids have been able to manage short animated films from about age three onwards. Test them out at home with a film first though!! I'm just waiting for my littlest one to 'come of age' then we can all go to the cinema on a rainy saturday afternoon...not that we get many of those in this country....

third the stacking cups. Ikea always has them in stock if you know of anyone going there.

Getting home (to East Dulwich) via Peckham nightmare... (26th Feb)
malcol replied to R&A's topic in The Lounge
It's all over now. Apparently they got the young boy down safely (according to a community warden) which is relief. -
I had my third with Brierley and they were wonderful. They do prefer people to decide that a home birth is what they are hoping for however, my understanding is that if, for whatever reason that decision needs to change then they will continue supporting you. The service they offer is great and very professional. I had several conversations with them over the phone and then with my husband before we were booked in with them. I can't actually comment on their skills during birth as unfortunately I misjudged my labour and didn't call them until the baby was quite literally on the way! They arrived 25 mins after the call was made and my baby was born 23 mins after the call! As I say that was my fault so that shouldn't be a worry for most people. The immediate after care was amazing both for me and my husband (who was a little traumatised) and made me very pleased that we chose them. If this is your first child don't be afraid of just phoning different teams up and chatting to them, most midwives I saw before and after always had time to chat and reassure me about any anxieties I had. Good luck with your decisions

Weather issues in East Dulwich - Schools, Transport...
malcol replied to Mark's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Heber is quite likely to be closed for the same reason as Goodrich, that is a lack of grit. Goodrich ran out of grit yesterday and any new supplies from Southwark are being prioritised for hospitals and roads. It is the need to keep external steps, paths and playgrounds ice free thats causing this current closure. The staff did a great job yesterday at getting into school and enabling it stay open, so although today is frustrating its just one of those health and safety issues that no-one can get around. -
I once read that 'to date no child has ever starved to death through being stubborn!'. If your children are still drinking milk and taking small amounts of food then they will be fine. This is probably a passing phase or indeed teeth related but if you were to record everything that your child eats in a 48 hour period you'll probably find it is a lot more than you think. If it continues longer than a few weeks than you have to decide whether you want to make it an issue or not. I have found that from a very early age children pick up issues about food and their parents expectations and they use it very successfully to push every button in your body! I have no answers but from my personal experience I would say don't get into the habit of offering alternatives at meal times. Cook what you think appropriate and if they don't eat it then they don't eat it! I wouldn't offer any puddings and try to limit snacks in between meals. I sound mean I know but believe me with three kids all with their own likes and dislikes I have to be!!

Car left running stolen on Friern Road under owner's nose
malcol replied to agathoise's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As I said previously this was just bad luck. Crime like this doesn't happen all the time she was in the wrong place at the wrong time and did something which seemed reasonable but with hindsight was risky. Its not her fault that some moron with no morals or values decided to get in her car and take it. Why can't some of you show a little more sympathy and stop being so smug about how it would never happen to you, one day it might! -
To be honest, I don't really understand these tables.

Royal mail are trying to ruin mine and my kids Christmas, starting with advent calenders. I went to Sylvester Rd today to be told by the nice guy there that they are delivering whatever comes to them but the problem appears to be at the depot in Vauxhall, which apparently covers all of South East London. There's not enough staff and a backlog of parcels. I've tried speaking to 'automated Sarah' on the customer helpline but to be honest she's a bit well...automated! I need someone to rant to, anyone got any recommendations?

Car left running stolen on Friern Road under owner's nose
malcol replied to agathoise's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I too have left my drivers side door open at Sainsbury's, my house door wide open whilst going on the school run and the most recent (and I like to think most spectacular!) I left my house keys in the lock of the front door from 4pm until 8.30am the next morning AND my husband was away for the night! Amazingly nothing has ever been stolen. Actually that's not true...I've had two Sat Navs stolen from the car because I keep forgetting to lock it!! My heart goes out to the lady who got her car stolen. That is just pure bad luck. Malcol -
Hi , Just to reassure you my eldest moved into his big boy bed when he was just about to turn 3yrs. Prior to that he had made no signs of wanting to move. We had by then taken him out of his grow bag and used a cot duvet for him. The transition into his big boy bed was fine, absolutely no problems! My middle child moved from his cot to his big boy bed when he was just over two. We had been having lots of problems with him waking during the night and refusing to go back to bed. After a few AWFUL months of this my father suggested we try a bed for him and within days of moving him into a bed the waking stopped! He is still a very early riser and if any of the three are to wake during the night it will be him! My daughter is 2 yrs and still in the cot, the longer I can keep her there the better!!! Personally I would suggest you keep him in the cot until either you feel uncomfortable with it or he does! As for the night waking, my personal and perhaps controversial suggestion would be to limit his day time nap to 1hr or thereabouts. Its possible he is just not tired enough at night! Just a suggestion, Good Luck M

Dulwich Park Children's Playground Incident
malcol replied to Angel Delite's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's quite possible that if this young lad has masturbated in the park then he may have masturbated in his school and if that is the case his school, be it Charter or not, may already be trying to keep an eye on his behaviour. Extra information given to the school should surely be seen as useful and not over reacting. It's not as if the OP could give a name or really detailed description but the incident itself may be enough to help staff help the individual. Lets hope it was just a very unfortunate place for him to have chosen to do this. -
Brilliant.

Complain. HSBC once cancelled the wrong card and when I went to innocently use it in Sainsbury's the checkout person called her line manager who then proceeded to cut it up in front of me and the rest of the queue behind me. I was very embarrased but just as cross as I knew there was money in the account. I complained very strongly, in writing. They checked their records about which card I had asked to originally cancel recognised their mistake and sent me a huge bunch of flowers and got me a new card sent out for the next day. Complaining works sometimes and makes you feel a lot better to do something rather than not. I think cancelling your account was a little premature as now you're not a customer and they have little motivation to look at your complaint. However, I also believe from what you have stated that the staff should have intervened. It doesn't matter whether you had finished your transaction or not if your belongins were still all over the machine then the man should have waited or politely asked you to move aside whilst he got in with his transaction.

malcol replied to northlondoner's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I was driving through the Bellenden road area an the way back to ED and and I happened to notice a printers just off the road (I think?) it was stating that it was able to do same day printing. Does anyone know what it is called or have the contact number? Thanks -
Just as an idea/information Goodrich School are organising a 5k plus 1 mile fun run (26 April) for children and parents and are incorporating free get fit training sessions for parents who are going to take part. The aim of the day is two fold. Firstly it is being organised as a fun family morning to promote family fitness and secondly as a fundraising event for the school PTA. There has been excellent support from local businesses which have helped to cover the set up costs, therefore the event has become accessible to most children with the lowest entrance fee being 50p from which they will recieve a medal and t-shirt. This year the fun run event is going to be just for Goodrich children but the 5k is open to any adult. I'm not sure in what capacity you are involved with the school in Sydenham but this could be an idea for promoting fitness and bringing your school community together. For more information on the run itself please see www.friendsofgoodrich.com I hope this useful. As an organiser of the event the set up has not been too difficult so far so could be an option for your school to organise.
