  1. He did lots of freelance work for things like the Jonathan Ross show and Cheryl Cole's hair for X factor or whatever she's on. Not thst that helps. And yeah, he was a brill hairdresser Jess

    Weeds

I love Weeds. Thought it was brill. The last series which was on in the US was a bit far fetched though. The first couple of series' are definitely the best.
  3. I was turned down for a stall as my cards aren't environmental enough (i use recycled card) and also apparently I'm not local enough (living on Peckham Rye). So I snubbed the fair too.
  4. I don't think LL *needs* anything shopwise. We live in London and have plenty of buses to take us to other shopping centres. And I shudder at the thought of Jigsawm(etc), purely from an oh-my-god-extend-my-overdraft-immediately p.o.v. In fact, what I'd like to see are a couple more charity shops.
  5. The white poppy is for pacifists and people who don't want to donate to the British Legion http://www.whitepoppy.org.uk/ I don't find it annoying or offensive.
  6. The haddock i had at Seacow was amazing, but the chips were dry and stale and very disappointing.
  7. I found Ukranian Tractors really quite dull. Am loving Tove Jansson's THE SUMMER BOOK and looking forward to when my son's old enough to be introduced to the Moomins
  8. I think it's a bit more complicated than that, Unkle_Paulie: yes, boredom, poverty, lack of responsible parenting most definitely come in to it. But also the negative effects of drink and drugs, the fact that children and teenagers can be impossibly cruel no matter their class or relative wealth. I'm not condoning these kids, or the crimes they commit. But I do think that they're a symptom of a wider malaise as opposed to a rogue brutish element which has nothing to do with their environment. If that makes any sense (it's been a long day...)
  9. Say what you like about Peckham High Road, but i think it's v handy and also as I've been going to the same shops for years quite friendly.
  10. Boredom is just one factor to the restlessness of young people today. Add in poverty and deprivation in a society which is mostly focussed on materialism and ownership then surely crimes of violence and robbery can't be a massive surprise? And there's the boredom of nothing to do on a Sunday afternoon, then there's the boredom of years and years with nothing to do, no outlet for creativity, energy etc, and no promise of things ever changing. It's a class and money thing.
  11. It's a great area - multicultural, easy access into town, aforementioned shops and cafes. Crime can and does happen anywhere. If I had a choice I'd move there as opposed to ED in fact.
  12. I've witnessed loads more dodgy things in Camberwell than in Peckham. A man was stabbed to death in broad daylight outside the bookshop I worked in amongst other things. Peckham is far from perfect, but I feel much safer in the shopping street there than I do in Camberwell.
  13. There'a a huge difference between north Peckham and Bellenden Road area. Though they share the same post code, they're worlds apart.
  14. as per your previous post Unkle_Paulie, what exactly do you think the youth of East Dulwich (the ones apparently instigating these attacks) actually deserve? Do you really think it is on the increase? Since when?
  15. Radio 4 ran the story this morning on the Today show news round-up as well. Must have been a good press release. Personally I don't mind it being headline news, but then I'm a bit of a leftie...

    ED's Soap Box

People who listen to loud music on their mobile phones (the music is invariably crap) I loathe free london papers which have no news and clog up an already clogged london Dogs not on leashes when they should be Mice anywhere and at any time
  17. Have had similar probs with Kings X GNER fast ticket machine which gave me tickets but failed to give me accompanying seat reservation on a packed out train so I was left standing most of 3 hours. Another word of advise regarding GNER: you can save loads of money if you get your tickets face to face at the station in advance as opposed to over the internet or even the phone. I saved about 50 quid last Easter.
  18. It seems to make you quite angry that some people actually like the play area
  19. dog poo not being white anymore cos of less calcium put in tinned dog food these days. Apparently.
  20. Are we still talking about the playground in Peckham Rye Park? If so, I (still - said so in earlier post) like it and while there with my little one today thought good things about it: small and enclosed so not worrying about him running off and being lost; never millions of people there like Dulwich Park. Plus I am a big fan of the park itself so always a joy for both of us to leave and meander back homeward bound through it. Honestly, if you saw the park near where my mother lives in Newcastle you'd see how good it is. I feel lucky to live near it.
  21. I like the Peckham Rye playground. Yes, it's not perfect. But I like the fact it's hidden in the trees and there are no cars to be seen; it's enclosed, secure and small enough to be able to keep an eye on my son. I love the park in general though - there's much more for kids to do there than just the play ground.
  22. Since 1998, with a year or so in NZ. Think for all the gentrification and the ludicrous property prices, it's still a good place to live.
  23. I think RosieH was using irony
  24. I always call it Denmark Hill round there. Not too fussed about the house though, either exterior and from reading the Indie today interior, but then I'm a bit boho and quite like clutter
  25. they're innocent until proven otherwise as far as i am concerned, what with us being a democracy etc.
