  2. Ryan Gander's piece, aside from the earth work that would have provided a dynamic space, would have directly supported youth performing arts projects in South London with about ?80,000 over the course of the next 10 years. Art with a function, art for the public. Instead the commissioners have picked a useless and non-site-specific piece of art that is, according to those two specifications, no different to the Hepworth that was put there 40 years ago. One might have thought that the idea of "public art" might have advanced somewhat in that time. But I suppose, after all, in these austere times, it's better to spend the full whack on a useless sculpture than on a project that gives money to local youth projects.
  3. Conrad Shawcross ugly metal things to be installed in the park: http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/barbara-hepworth-sculpture-stolen-from-dulwich-park-to-be-replaced-with-antitheft-works-by-conrad-shawcross-8892880.html
  4. I don't think anyone is going to be very happy about the final decision that has been made about this :( Except for the artist that won
  5. Hi John K, We've been in consultation with a landscape architect and the park management who all felt that there would be no issue with drainage. Owing to the proposed position, which is at the higher end of the park, the gentle slope should allow the water to run off freely. There is an area of lower ground nearby which, we have been told by the park management, has never had a problem with drainage. So we feel positive that the area will remain a groundwork and not a water feature!
  6. All maintenance issues have been considered and budget put aside for any additional mowing that may need to be done. There is a map of the proposed location at www.astageforanything.com.
  7. The bird's eye view is almost secondary to the function of the space, the fact that from above it looks like the Hepworth is more a part of the process than being an overriding concept. Most importantly it provides an interesting space that can be enjoyed in a similar way to the Hepworth. During the research for this project Ryan read threads on this very forum where people shared photos and memories of their enjoyment of the Hepworth, and it is hoped that this space would be enjoyed in similar ways. Fourth plinth has been done before, no point recreating it. But if a platform for happenings is what you want then the Stage For Anything provides just that, as well as a budget for local performing arts groups to put on a yearly performance.
  8. UPDATE: there are now video interviews with the artists on the Southwark website: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200438/dulwich_park_art_commission/3119/shortlisted_artists
  9. The Peckham Pelican has started having some gigs
  10. I see the similarity! However the image on the site is a photograph of a model rather than a painting (I wish I was that good at painting!), take note of the detail to the rhododendron bushes on the model.
  11. The four artists' proposals for the new art work will be on display at a special exhibition open to the public. Date: 14, 15 and 21, 22 September Time: From 11am to 5pm Location: Francis Peek Centre, Dulwich Park, College Road, SE21 7BQ The artists are: Ryan Gander, Anya Gallaccio, Conrad Shawcross and Eva Rothschild. At the exhibition you will be able to view models, watch film and read artists' statements about the proposed works. You will then be able to comment on them. If you can't attend the exhibition itself then you can view the four shortlisted artists' proposals online and then share your views by completing an online form: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200438/dulwich_park_art_commission I work for Ryan Gander and you can find out more about his project here: astageforanything.com
