Muggers (My son was mugged on Dulwich common)
Zaardvark replied to loobylou's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi, I don't think that posting items like this is scaremongering. It would seem better to have this discussion in a different thread than one such as this one, where it would seem to belittle or question the motives of the original poster. In my initial (probably overly harsh) response to Jim I also note that a similar type of incident occurred very near the park at a bus stop in the morning. This sort of incident was common on Ruskin park a few years ago but I noted that park wardens became more proactive and questioned pairs or groups of youths who appeared to hanging around entrances, etc. I don't know for certain how well it worked but I have not heard of any incidents there recently. Muggers (My son was mugged on Dulwich common)
Zaardvark replied to loobylou's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Jim Friends of mine witnessed a mugging at 8.30 am at the bus stop at Dulwich library the other day. My general reading of the forum tells me this is getting more common rather than less at the moment. Furthermore your posts fit into a rather sad type - you said something that you would never have said to the original poster in person. This may be random noise in the averages but Dulwich village mugging tells you that (a) either the muggers are targeting more vulnerable spots or (b) that the entire locality is vulnerable or © more probably both. How on earth did my reply to Barry's message (see my previous post) come before his message on the board? The forum is acting a bit wierd at the moment (all the forum looks new although I am logged in and viewing things). Best Z

Thank you Barry. Z

Hi, Just an observation for north dulwich - that the old timetables are still up (my wife missed a train there last night because of it). Best Z

Hi, Thanks very much for this - much appreciated. For David Leach: With the overstocking thing - I think the main issue is that the boxes/trolleys are left unmanned and full of unpacked produce for significant periods of time, if it were the case that they were being unpacked as quickly as possible I doubt there would be complaints. I observed on Sunday that boxes of bananas were left so as to almost completly block the fruit ailse for 15 minutes or so and then someone arrived and started/finished unpacking them. This has got much much worse since the enlargment, which does not quite make sense if it is just a restocking issue. Best Z

It could be an allergic reaction to one or two bites - they might generate 10 or 12 bite like looking spots. I get that after mossie bites when in tropical parts. I thought they were extra bites but a medic friend told me otherwise after examining them. I then took an antihistamine and felt/got better. Best Z

This is an important thread guys - can we stop it drifting. Does anyone one know if any other local schools (Torygraph or Grauniad, Independent or State, with kids or with kids) have been affected by this? Best Z

I told my wife about this and she said "Really! And what about the fairies?". My 3 yr old then said "Don't talk to the wolves. There are wolves in the woods, aren't there?" Anyway, given there is quite a history of this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4370893.stm) and (this guy used unattributed excerpts from the forum in his report) http://londonist.com/2009/04/the_saturday_strangeness_41.php - I don't think you are (too) mad. Hi Why is everyone still discussing this - Unkle_Paulie was due to have meeting with them on Saturday just gone if I read his posts correctly. The purpose of the thread originally was to help him make a list of the most common complaints for that meeting - adding new ones now is missing the point. Unkle Paulie - could you update us on the meeting before these guys tear themselves apart? :) best Z.

1. The lack of night lighting or gates locked at Sunset in the park (Sainsbury's own it.) I have come upon drunks sleeping off the night before on the bench on Sunday mornings, kids doing drugs in the playground, etc. 2. Why, in a 24 hour store, are the staff always restocking shelves during the busiest times of the day rather than early morning or at night? They block up the aisles with boxes, trolleys, etc. 3. Frequently they stock raw food on the same shelf next to cooked food (raw chicken next to ham), with no dividers. lots of other things come to mind (like what are they doing about store security in the light of the several incidents of gang and other violence reported over the last couple of years). Why is it such a disaster since the renovation? (I have been told they exceeded their planning permission on that too - apparently it is being arbitrated.) Sorry for the moan but I have tried complaining about the first couple of points but did not get a response. Best Z edited for speeelllingnng

Sorry for the accusatory association DM. I recant my previous statement.

Yes - DM is our number one I suppose - but on further reflection, given the similarities in language, might this vicount chappie be her long lost twin? Z Edited for speeleleleingnnnnn

Irony, irony - the irish bit is illogical but the comment is intended in jest. Must be DM's country cousins..

When I was 5 I was stung a few hundred times by a swarm of bees trying to set up a hive in a tree in our garden. Still, it means I don't react much to the one or two bee stings I have had subsequently, which were certainly less painful than encounters with angry bus drivers (whose names may or may not begin with A). However evil the bast**ds may be at times they are essential to food production so live and let live I say. Best Z

Hi, A few things 50 generations is unlikely to be enough time for there to be significant effects of selective pressure. Experience is thought to affect the activity of genes (the amount a gene is expressed) via what are called epigenetic mechanisms. These changes may be partly heritable but the extent to which they are is unknown and it would (currently) seem unlikely that all bar a small few of these changes would persist beyond a couple of generations. The biggest issue, as far as I can see, is that having kids at 20 is physiologically easier than at 30, and children of the 20 year olds would have a better chance of their parent looking after them until adulthood especially as 2000 years ago the average life expectancy would have been ~40. Parents starting at 30 would also have fewer kids for obvious reasons and, combined with more complications in birth, overall it would seem to me that the group with younger parents would have some advantages as well as being considerably more numerous. Thanks guys- useful advice indeed. I am looking into what you recommended - thinking I might try to persuade them that we could live like kings in Turkey for a month for less money. Best Z
