Remind you of Harry Enfield sketch- "I saw you coming"?

Apparently Portas has described female cabinet members as being ugly and stated that they should be given a make-over and make more glamorous and sexy. Can you imagine the kerfuffle if it was a male making such a comment?

Is there a plan to tackle crime in the area?

Just because people are complaining doesnt mean they aren't reporting crimes as well - merely that they are disenchanted about the possibility of it leading to any change. -
Bottom line for me is just to look at the amount of time his friend spent in his vicinity in even a quasi-official capacity. And how in the name of God did his friend get the sense that he was entitled to print up HoP business cards whether or not it was with the knowledge/permission of Fox? Is it now 22 visits to the MoD in 16 months? And all sorts of other jaunts as well. Whoever paid for them and whatever was discussed the appalling lack of judgment and blurring of boundaries is just unacceptable.

With the police cuts coming in I think the likelihood of seeing more bobbies on the beat is somewhere round zero. Think I mentioned elsewhere on here a police acquaintance of mine who works in the despatch centre taking 999 calls. He had to sit and listen to a woman being beaten by her partner for AN HOUR before he could find a unit that could respond. I have known a couple of other assaults where 99 calls have been made and it's just been a complete no-show from the boys in blue. Bottom line is a 999 call to the police is a lottery these days. You might get two or three cars within minutes or you might be waiting hours. The response on this forum to date to any suggestion of proactivity by the community has been a display of lamentable lily-liverishness from an H&S conference. -

Perhaps everyone should view Pacific Heights again to see how badly wrong it can go?

I am afraid that by the general opinion of this forum, there is nothing to be done. When security guards tackle criminals we are told it is not their job and they should just watch it happen and leave it to the police. When a neighbourhood watch type scheme is suggested it is decried as carrying the risk that someone might actually break a nail or risk offending someone so it can't beencouraged. Result - we all sit and complain and put up with it. -
The 'odd' behaviour from Knox is consistent with adult ADHD aswell as with autistic spectrum disorders. With regard to the false accusation after a lengthy interrogation (although I thought it was 14 rather than 40 hours) why would this surprise anyone? People confess to PERSONALLY having done serious crimes they are innocent off, so it is not remotely surprising that someone could be co-erced into accusing someone else. An FBI interrogation expert who was quoted on the subject stated that he was not surprised the authorities had extracted false statements but was simply surprised it had taken them as long as it did. Let's think about the Birminghan Six - they all confessed to crimes of which they were clearly innocent after unsupervised, unrecorded interviews. And they were worldly, grown men. The phenomenally powerful dynamics of interrogation situations are well researched ad extremely alarming. Have a look at the case of Paul Ingram: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thurston_county_ritual_abuse_case There is also an excellent chapter on the alarming conclusions about interrogation psychology in the excellent book on cognitive dissonance 'Mistakes Were Made But Not By Me'. I truly believe that this book should be required reading at school.

Am quite serious. Coffins could be buried vertically (feet first) with just as much dignity and ease as lengthwise and it would save space. Many years ago when in Switzerland we noticed that the length of the graves was very very short. We attempted to discretely enquire why without success. My gran suggested that only explanation she could make sense of was vertcal insertion of the coffin and it made a lot of sense to me.

Phone snatched from me on No.12 bus
Damian H replied to msamykey's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Always struck me that the 12 bus is a mugger's Christmases all come at once. Just watch or some poor sap near the door who is using their phone or not holding onto their gear, wait until the doors are just starting to close, grab it and jump of with the doors closing behind you. The driver will keep going and it will probably take ages until someone tells him what has happened. I am surprised it doesn't happen more often. I also keep my eyes peeled for any dodgy characters standing on the pavement when the doors open. Same thing could happen - this time with the mugger seeing a victim from outside and popping onto the bus just long enough to grab and depart. Keep your valuables hidden, or firmly grasped and keep your eyes open for those around you. -

Just an idea. I appreciate the difficulties the police have and that it is largely a resourcing issue. I am less interested in criticising the police and more interested in seeing where that leaves us and where things are going with further cuts. I take your point, however, but I feel we are moving towards a situation where people and communities will have to be more proactive in protecting themselves in a lawful and responsible manner. -

Loz Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > You wait until you need them, then I bet you'll > have a different opinion. The question is, when you need them will they turn up? I know an officer working in a control room who sat on the phone for an hour listening to a woman having the s**t kicked out of her by her partner fo an hour before he was able to locate a car that was free to respond! His verdict, informally expressed: "Get out of London, we can't protect you." I have had the same experience with a guy running around near The Plough threatening people. I caled the police twice and they had no-one to respond. Another occasion at Mile End - young woman nearly assaulted and robbed in a coffee shop - forty-five minutes after the police had been called they still hadn't shown and I had to leave. Friend recently was burgled just off LL while he and his family were upstairs. Police were called in early hours - didnt turn up till about 8am. In the meantime said thugs had come back and attempted to steal his car. I love the idea of the police - works in theory. Problem is it is a complete lottery as to whether they will actually be available to respond. -

Showing that banks tend to be bluffers and liars who will do anything to wiggle out of taking responsibility for the failure of their own systems. -

Surely it is well known that a Lebanese Loop can copy the card and pin hole cameras can be installed in machines to catch the PIN? I am very surprised to hear that a bank is still telling people that these things can't happen. -
I think that Christmas is something ED does quite well generally with people like Monica really leading the community involvement from retailers. Any thoughts as to how we could make things even better this year?

parent and child spaces in sainsbury's car park
Damian H replied to dully's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Straw man after straw man after straw man - it really beggars belief. Firsly, civilservant, I have never accused 'all' ED parents of behaving in this way, so I have no idea where you get that from. Secondly, I do not have s 'hate-set' including any group whatsoever. I have frustration with various elements of inconsiderate and selfish behaviour which I have elaborated upon. I suspect there are a vast number of people who object to various types of self-absorbed behaviour without that representing 'hate'. Again, I wonder if we have some projecion going on here? The other aspects of anti-social behaviour you identify, I also object to but they are not related to this thread so why would I have brought them up? In terms of working at laptops in coffee houses, I have always been very aware of what table space is available and have often moved to a smaller table myself or left a cafe if there is a queue and I am not spending enough to justify a table. That has been apreciated and recognised by the owners and I suspect if others I have mentioned were as considerate to the interests of staff and customers things would be considerably improved. "Bashing an easy target"? Firstly I am not bashing anyone - I have set out an opinion and defended it in response to attacks, insults and some pretty disgusting group bulying behaviour on here. If anyone has been 'bashed' it is me and I am not at all sorry if you don't like the fact that I have pushed back. Evidently you thought I was an easy target who wouldnt stand up for an opinion and I am not at all sorry if it has surprised you to find out that is not the case. Complaining about the use of a facility I don't use? Well, since when did a person only have a right to an opinion on something that directly affected them. If we applied that principle to the whole Forum we could probably halve the number of posts in any thread. PeckhamBoy - I have an office with wifi and a dongle as well but sometimes I currently (and very often historically) used local wifi enabled venues for variety or necessity. Also in terms of me being 'rude', I would love you to point out where I have been rude, other than briefly by returning a specific insult to the sender in response to being personally insulted? I appreciate that some people categorise firmly stating an opinion they don't like as rudeness but I don't think that really fits the dictionary definition. I think the most risible comments, however, are the objections to the number of posts I have made. I think if you will look back over this whole thread you will find they are commensurate wth the number of insults, criticisms etc that have been levelled at me by a swarm of different posters. To object to my posts is effectively to say "Damian H, why won't you keep quiet and say nothing when we gang up to bash you?" I think the answer is self-evident. If you don't want a dog to bark stop poking it with a stick! I do realise the main objection you have is the fact that someone has a different opinion to you, is not afraid to voice it and has thrown most of your points back in your face. Not a comfortable experience for people who expect a local concensus on such matters and think they should be able to shout down, insult, brow-beat and generally intimidate a dissenting voice. Well...tough! -
