We did cold turkey and it worked. Our first had his dummy until he was 3 and we were very nervous about taking it away. But when we did we only had one night of tears and then he was all good. So we were emboldened to try the same on our 5 month old and it was similarly easy. We didn't use any special technique or words, just a little extra TLC during the first night or two. All to say that, if you're lucky like us, it might not be the nightmare you think.

There'll always be mutterers who resent their peace being disturbed by a baby or toddler. Provided you're doing your best to keep your little one happy and occupied, just ignore them or ask them directly what their issue is. Most in my experience just say 'nothing' and go on muttering. I once sat opposite a woman who spent the entire train journey talking loudly on her mobile, and then started tutting when my boy got wriggly (but not loud). Once I'd sated myself by having a daydream about crushing her phone under my foot, I just ignored her. Some people just have a bent about noise from kids, just like I have a bent about loud phone conversations.

A lot of the songs that I like and think would be good at a funeral just don't reflect my life. I like 'Hurt' but I imagine my wife and family and friends would be a bit confused if they heard it at my funeral. So I'm looking for a song that says 'I've had a good life, I'm sorry to go, and while I want you all to mourn me for my allotted 30 minutes please get on with your lives thereafter', in a suitably somber way. My son went to MFN for two years until we moved out of ED and it was a bit of a come down when we visited the nurseries in our new area. None of them had the friendly, community feel of MFN and they all felt a bit 'commercial'. I'd wholeheartedly recommend it. I only need to look at the scrapbook of photos and memories they gave him when he left to know it's a good place.

And if all investment banks rip off their shareholders and provide a lousy service to their customers, why do people continue to invest in them and use their services? Investment banks help raise finance for infrastructure and other projects that create jobs. They lend money to businesses to exist, expand and therefore keep and create jobs. They help foster stability and certainty by hedging business' exposure to interest and exchange rates and commodity prices, certainty that allows those business' to expand. They fcuk it up sometimes, there are some rogue individuals out there and the effects can be bad, very bad. But can we stop the 'all banks are bad and all bankers are greedy, rich wnakers' chant please? It's getting really lame.
