  1. We've asked TFL Buses about the lack of information about the diversion over Twitter. At first they said that there were notices on the stops, but not they say they're going to investigate. Please feel free to add your complaint to this thread, here: https://twitter.com/TfLBusAlerts/status/1068118110132215808
  2. I am really sorry to hear about this Gillian. I got burgled in December and had two ukuleles taken. Neither was very valuable, but one was a present from a friend and so I was very sad about that. Oddly enough they picked up a guitar and then left it behind, perhaps when they noticed the ukuleles. I wonder if mine were the same thieves who have a penchant for string instruments. The other things they took included an antique laptop, a cheap radio, a couple of very old Nokia mobiles and strangest of all, my razor and manicure set. I do hope you find your viola, anyway.
  3. I've also had a glut of apples this year, and was having trouble finding enough people to give them away to. It seems to be an early fruiting tree, so there won't be much more but if enough people were interested, I'd definitely like to be involved in some kind of coop. How much does an apple press cost, roughly? Does anyone know?
  4. I did try TuGo, but found it didn't work very well. Sometimes, it didn't respond when there was an incoming call, which meant that I couldn't answer. And when I called out the quality was very poor. But thanks for the suggestion of getting a PAYG sim. I had thought of this, but hoped to narrow it down before I went through the hassle of getting hold of them. I assume you can pick them up for nothing, these days?
  5. I would be quite happy with my current provider O2, were it not for the fact that in my home close to Goose Green roundabout, I get such a weak signal that I usually have to go outside to make a call. Can anyone recommend provider who might have better coverage in this area? Apologies if this has been recently covered in another thread, to which I would be happy to be signposted.
  6. Well, for what it's worth, I agree with you Fizzmoll but there has already been a long ranty correspondence on the Forum on this issue, with remarkably strong views expressed which frankly leave me gasping for some rather strong coffee. I can say no more.
  7. Hi Stardust, La Scala Coffeeshop on Grove Vale has wifi, there is almost always a seat, and they seem quite happy for people to ensconce themselves in their with a laptop for a while (so long as they buy a drink at least!). They also do the best coffee I have found in the area and the couple who run it are quite delightful. They even have a small garden at the back. In case you're not familiar with this wonderful establishment, here's a map. I hope to see you there some time!
  8. I've take stuff to the Mind Shop at the start of Grove Vale and they've taken it. I think they get something like ?50 a tonne for it. I think it's nice to warn them what it is though, especially if a bag contains items that might frighten the horses.

As a former librarian, I see absolutely nothing wrong with homeless people coming into public libraries to read a newspaper in a warm place, any more than with senior citizens who can't afford to heat their homes. Incidentally, libraries in Southwark now all provide free wifi, though no sign of a caramel latte...
  10. Was this ever really a hotel, and if so, does anyone know anyone who admits to staying there? I always thought it was either a scam or a joke.
  11. Sadly the pedestrian was killed in the accident. A policeman told me the road would remain closed for the rest of the night. They are also not letting pedestrians though further than the station.
  12. I go to GK Barbers at 7 Melbourn Grove (the station end). They always do a good job. http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/directory/1183/162015.php
  13. Is this just a move to cater to North London hipsters wanting to get a cheap bus tour of the backstreets of Peckham?
  14. Which White Horse are you talking about. Is this a pub in East Dulwich that I've somehow managed to miss all these years? Or a traditional name for a pub that goes under another one?
  15. At risk of being branded a Pollyanna, I just think everyone who works in every shop around Lorship Lane I've ever been in is just lovely, lovely, lovely. Particular mention must go to A.J. Farmer (everything you possibly need for the home, including kryptonite for shifting stubborn Supermen), Pretty Traditional, both Shaun's ? great for home maintenance tips ? and Dulwich DIY, the beautiful young things of Blackbird Bakery, Rye Books (of course), Mon P'tit Choux for the friendlisest latte and Toasted where the staff greet me like a long lost friend and let me carrying on tasting wines I can't afford, Cheese Block, SMBS, and let us not forget the carefully compact Dulwich Supermarket, which contains as many lines as Sainsbury's within less square meterage than needed for three car parking spaces. None of these places will have given their staff "customer service" training. What you get instead is good, honest, human contact, sometimes with a smile, sometimes wryly laconic, always individual and genuine.
  16. I hadn't heard this line, but I'm glad Andy has posted this, and that he's had sympathetic support from the Administrator. My concern has been how in general, people have used the Forum to try and get revenge on local businesses often for trivial matters. In one case, I felt bound to intervene over what was clearly an unjustified slur on one of my favourite local shops. I was pleased that on this occasion the administrator took the thread down. I think that a small minority people have to understand the difference between expressing an opinion and just being pettty and vindictaive. So can I just take this opportunity to say that I haunt almost all the pubs and bars in East Dulwich and I have never experienced anything from the delightful bar staff other than courtesy and kindness far beyond the call of duty, often enduring with remarkalbe forbearance what must feel like hours of my droning on and on endlessly about how things were so much better in my day, and the music was so much better, and do people really pay that much for a bottle of beer these days...
  17. Just went past and the tarmac is beginning to bulge upwards. Looks like it's going to be Herne Hill all over again. Somebody was on their mobile to Thames Water who were "waiting for a gang to arrive". So glad our water bills are going up by almost ?30 a year when this is the service they provide.
  18. As a regular London cyclist who hasn't owned a car for 20 years, I have to say, I completely agree. Over 16, maximum, and you're more than big enough to ride on the road. At risk of being a hypocrite however, I have to confess, that I often pavement-ride the final 3 metres or so to my flat, but only if there's no one walking on the pavement. I get this wierd kick out of being able to wobble all the way to my garden gate and am working up to being able to unlock it without putting my feet down. Probably not a good idea at my advanced age.
  19. ...apart from K&W, lovely though it is. Part of me feels that I shouldn't ask this question. But as a registered clinophobia sufferer, where might I get a drink after the Bishop has stopped serving?
  20. I'd just like to back up the point about Indian Mischief. The food is fantastic, vegetarian, has a lovely garden out back where you can sit on warm evenings, and the people who run it - part of the SMBS/Cheese Block Clan ? are really laid back and friendly. Highly recommended. ( http://www.timeout.com/london/restaurants/indian-mischief )
  21. Blackbird Bakery on Grove Vale: great bread, great coffee, great staff and an open fire in the winter.
  22. James, Regarding the Spurling Road cycle contraflow. This deserves the status of "ghost cycle route" ? how would anyone know it's there since it isn't signed and there's no indication from the roundabout that cyclists are permitted to use the facility? I'm afraid it's yet another example of embarrassingly half-hearted cycle facilities, for which the UK is justly famous throughout Europe. See, for example http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/gallery/2009/oct/20/crap-cycle-lanes Kind regards,
  23. Can anyone do anything about the appalling ignorance of Facebook when it comes to South London geography. If you post a picture and then choose East Dulwich as a location, the page it links to says: "East Dulwich, Bromley, United Kingdom". East Dulwich is in Bromley? I don't think so. Or is there another East Dulwich in Bromley?
  24. Went for my blood test at Dulwich Hospital at 7am this morning, half an hour before opening and there were 23 people ahead of me. The friendly staff are super-efficient though and I got seen around 8.10am. Popped back to pick up my forgotten reading glasses at 11.30am and there was still quite a queue. The gentleman doing the leeching said afternoons are quieter. People who need a cholestorol count need to go first thing if they have fasted for 12 hours and want it over with so they can have breakfast, not to mention those trying not to be late for work. The only place I've found information online is here: http://www.kch.nhs.uk/service/a-z/phlebotomy The only thing I learned from the page is a new word ? phlebotomy.
