There's a new "pile" on the stretch between Goodrich and LL practically every morning, suspiciously similar in size. > there are dog bins there as well! I've written to the > council about it but there is only so much they > can do. Actually on Friern there's only one of these bins up near the junction with LL. I wish there were more bins, signs and renewed pavement markings. That said I doubt these would deter the thoughtless antisocial perpetrator(s).

Best route to Paddington Rail Station ?
davidq100 replied to intexasatthe moment's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes - but it's a bit quicker to take the Victoria Line to Oxford Circus and change to the Bakerloo (very easy change across platforms). Another option I've used when in a hurry = Uber to Brixton then Victoria-Bakerloo tube. Can be done door to platform in about 45 mins if all the stars align. -
Am sure you are aware but the 12 goes to Oxford Circus (although always feels like a forever journey!)

Thameslink from Denmark Hill
davidq100 replied to Zebedee Tring's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The 8:16 from Peckham Rye was >5 minutes late today - and rammed solid. Time keeping generally seems to have become a little better since the continuous shambles a couple of months ago. Agree it is unfortunately still the best way to get to Farringdon / St Pancras... -
We recently had a Howdens kitchen installed by our builder as part of a bigger project. For us at least they were ok to tell us the costs involved, although presumably that's because they were able to create a quote on our builder's account. For what it's worth it cost about ?5.5k for Burford cabinets and doors, handles, a built-in microwave, wine fridge and waste disposal. Ours was quite a large kitchen with a long run of cabinets along one wall and an island. The quote was similar to Ikea, a little cheaper than Wickes and massively less than Magnet. We bought the worktops (quartz) separately from Bells on Lordship Lane after a tip on the forum. Was a good decision as they were cheaper than anyone else and did a great job with installation. We are very happy with the end result - the kitchen looks amazing and has a genuine quality feel. I'd certainly recommend the Howdens units although for what its worth, we also had a quote from Bells for comparable cabinets and doors which were a little more expensive than Howdens but not by much. If you set-up an appointment with Howdens (Kevin is the manager there I think), they should be able to give you some indication of the cost. I'd also suggest having a chat with Keith at Bells.

Where to go when you move out for building works?
davidq100 replied to Chirpie's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Agree 100% with Pickle - assume 4 weeks. We just spend the best (worst) part of a year living out of the house while it was being refurbished. Originally expected to be out for 4 months :) We moved back in as soon as we could but had a dreadful month or so living in a building site - a world of dust. That was without kids so I imagine the pain would be compounded with the 3 of you. For what it's worth, we ended up as nomads, circulating between staying with friends, relatives outside of London at weekends and various low cost hotels during week days (we found that Jury's in East Croydon was a good, cheap base). If we did it again (never!) then we'd defintely rent a place. The cost outweighs the pain. I remember there were some quite nice-looking 'whole house' options locally on air bnb -
Bakerloo line extension consultation open
davidq100 replied to craigyboy71's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James Barber's very own Simon Hughes has launched a petition for support for the extension too I notice. Can't do any harm I suppose (so long as it doesn't condem signatories to a tidal wave of future party political spam) http://www.simonhughes.org.uk/bakerloo -
Looks like TFL are pretty non-committal about expanding the scheme according to this article with the "Cycling czar" Andrew Gilligan. http://www.bikeradar.com/commuting/gear/article/bikeradar-readers-quiz-londons-cycling-commissioner-43881/ That said there's a slight glimmer of hope in that they are 'considering' expanding to 'parts of Southwark'. Fingers crossed. "We?re not going to expand the scheme significantly further ? we are going to have incremental expansion though, what I call oozing: we?re going to expand it to the Olympic Park next year for instance, and there are demands for us to expand it to parts of Southwark, which we?re considering. But on the whole we?re not going to have any major expansions because it costs quite a lot of money and we have a very good deal with Santander, which has significantly reduced the cost to the taxpayer ? and I want to spend the cycling budget on infrastructure rather than on cycle hire."

Signed too. Fingers crossed. Would be great (apart from the hills)

@Rolo Tomasi No easy answer to that one. I think the bus is the most reliable option currently. It's going to take you about 40 mins at that time of night. The train *should* be faster, but then again you could easily be left hanging around for half an hour waiting for a train to turn up. Delays and cancellations are endemic on Thameslink at the moment. Based on the last week or so you might be better chancing your luck at London Bridge. It's less than 10 mins walk from Tate Modern too.

Future Thameslink service from Peckham Rye
davidq100 replied to jj2's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Another shocker this morning. Interestingly there was a suprise extra Thameslink service - the 8:24 - which arrived at Peckham Rye at 8:36. It was so full that hardly anyone could get on though. The 8:36 came in at 8:48 and was rammed of course. The Victoria train was >10 mins late too. The system seems really broken at the moment :( -

From my observation I'd agree with your analysis Renata. The Victoria trains do seem (a bit) less packed than the Thameslink trains, although any significant delay or cancellation immediately tips these over the edge too. The other thing I'd like to mention, although not sure if anything can be done, is the lack of timely information about delays. A good example was yesterday where the 8:33am to Victoria and 8:36am Thameslink were both still showing as being 'on time', even though it was already 8:37am -
easiest journey to Heathrow in morning peak?
davidq100 replied to Bluelagoon's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The LHR travel debate continues! I unfortunately have to make the trip to and from T5 several times a month. In my experience I'd also recommend the following, although all require a taxi at some stage in the journey for maximum speed: 1) Via Hex / Paddington - Option A: Taxi to Brixton, tube to Paddington (easy change at Oxford Circus from Victoria to Bakerloo). I've managed to do this in under 1 hour, although usually more like 75 mins. Cost for 1: ?32 HEX (return), ?30 taxi (return) - Option B: Taxi to Elephant and Castle, tube to Paddington. Taxi is more expensive and traffic to E&C can be bad 2) Taxi there and back. Depending on how long you are going for, it's cheaper than parking+petrol. Mason & Green will take you there for ?38 and collect you for around ?40. The benefits of stepping out of the terminal into a car and being whisked back to ED are not to be underestimated. Particularly after a long-haul flight. 3) Taxi to Baron's Court, tube to Heathrow. Pretty quick if traffic to Barons Court is ok. Similar total price as Brixton > Tube > HEX (?50 taxi return, ?10 tube). A bit slower. As previously mentioned, if there's more than one of you then HEX becomes more expensive than a cab / driving. Can't wait for CrossRail! -
Future Thameslink service from Peckham Rye
davidq100 replied to jj2's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
More ammo for Renata: I take the Thameslink from P'Rye into Farringdon daily (8:16 or 36 usually). It's been very rough so far this year: late by at least 5 minutes everyday. Jammed like sardines everyday. This morning the train couldn't leave the platform at Peckham for 5 mins or so because it was too full for the doors to close. And that was at 9:30am. Coming back, as antantant says, it's less busy at Farringdon (can sometimes get a seat!), but by the time it reaches Elephant and Castle there's still often no room left for people to get on. It wasn't quite as bad before Xmas and the London Bridge shambles, but was still packed in both directions most days. Give it a go any weekday morning and you'll get a good idea why more trains are needed. Btw it would be also helpful if this line ran through the centre at weekends. Hopefully that will come with the "new Thameslink"...
