I put my petition to get signatures! This has turned into a rather silly opinion and counter-opinion discussions! I don't mind people having opinions about the petition but not to the point of pettiness!
-
So a little bit of positivity to our direction please :)
-
I don't mind you disagreeing with me, but LondonMix ia actually coming across as being deliberately antagonistic to our petition! I have given so much background information about this! We had been to meetings and had long chats with the ppl involved making this decision as we have kids on the list to start the nursery this September! I am only entitled to 15 hours of free hours not 30! We can only send my daughter to a private nursery, if Fairlawn Nursery was to close down because all the other school nurseries (except for St Francesca- a catholic school) is really not doable for us because of where we live! A few minutes to the north of the school! In addition, nursery staff will now face redundancies. They really love that nursery as they had been working there for many years! Furthermore that nursery is a community nursery feeding to many schools, horniman, st barts, dalmain, holy trinity...
-
LondonMix is not you again, is it? Honestly it is exhausting arguing with you! All the schools in the area had a budget cut by 35% at the beginning of the year which meant that the school could no longer keep the nursery! They are absolutely devastated to make that decision! They can't offer 30 hours of childcare! They are not a childcare provider but an education provider! Simple enough for you? Sorry to be rude but you are coming across as being antagonistic to our petition!
-
yes sorry. my mistake, shouldn't have put it on the general discussions!

Hi please take a moment to sign our petition to save our nursery. After 23 years of providing excellent service for the community, Lewisham Council decided to close down our nursery. My son was there last year and was very happy. Lovely staff, excellent resources. We need more nurseries in the community not less! http://www.thepetitionsite.com/450/616/975/save-fairlawn-nursery/?taf_id=23276060&cid=fb_na#

Growlybear Eliot Bank is too far for me. My only option is really a private nursery! Which is an expensive option for many parents. The deficit into running this nursery is pitifully small (too big for the school). The council seems to have money for digging up streets so why can't they fund a nursery which provides a vital service for many families around the area? Furthermore, what is the council going to do with that site now? Block of flats? Furthermore in a wider context, why are the rich given tax breaks (who does this exactly benefit except for the rich and the conservative party? Not the Nation!)? Why should our children pay for the ill conceived decisions that the central government is making?
-
Sorry I am not personally attacking you but neither do you know anything about me or the people on the list to start Fairlawn Nursery this coming September. Haseltine is in further down in Sydenham. No way our kids could make it there. So our options are private nurseries (which don't necessarily have a teacher and would be expensive for most parents) or school nurseries which are out of reach for us or give priorities to children who are from either catholic background (St Francesca for instance) or children who are at the school already. So Lewisham Council is wrong! What most parents who have 3 year olds kids want, are for their children to be prepared for the life in primary school as well as being looked after really well which is what Fairlawn Nursery is providing!
-
I live three miles away from the Haseltine so do a lot of us with children on Fairlawn Nursery's list. That's why. As I said LondonMix, you obviously don't have any kids of your own to know about practicalities about getting kids to and from the schools, nurseries etc... or about the benefits of having children in school nurseries as they really prepare kids for the life in primary schools :)
-
Yes we do. The answer to question is that they need to increase the funding. They need to factor in the cost of running a separate annex.
-
We put a petition together to show how much we love this nursery and also urge Lewisham Council to find a way to keep it, DaveR.
-
Why do you want to set the record straight? I just don't understand what have you got against our poor little nursery? :)
-
It is really exhausting trying to reason with you LondonMix, Fairlawn Nursery's numbers might be falling down but this is not because they are providing bad service. It is because they had to make changes so that they can keep the nursery! Like for instance last year when my son was there they had 60 kids. This is what they were offering one full day and 4 half days. They had to get rid of one full day (cost cutting exercise)!
-
LondonMix, I think you either don't have any kids or you choose to believe what you want to believe. The facts are Lewisham Council began funding the school nurseries differntly due to cuts which has made it impossible for Fairlawn school to keep its annex! We have been to meetings! Read article below: http://www.southlondonpress.co.uk/article.cfm?id=116736
-
dbboy? Sorry? Are you the one who suggested that we should go and talk to other schools? All these schools had cuts this year. So no they can't afford to come on board either. Why shouldn't we blame the government for it? Case in point is cuts to disability benefits while giving tax breaks to the rich. Anyhow whether you share my politics or not please sign my petition :) You never know one day you might need that nursery for your children, grandchildren etc...
-
I don't think at all that school nurseries are getting more unpopular. PPL with children already in the school do their best to get their second or the third one into the school nurseries even if it means using childminders etc... What is happening is that central government's inability to collect taxes properly is costing us mortal beings vital services whether that be education or health services. And I still need you to sign my petition thank you :)
-
Heber is not doable for us, i am afraid! There is an article that SLP covered on this issue: http://www.southlondonpress.co.uk/article.cfm?id=116736
-
Forgive my cynicism but you can't be that sad about a community nursery closing down and potentially 60 families per year losing out on excellent provisions made in this nursery to prepare the kids for primary schools , staff facing redundancies as a result of this. The school is devastated to having to make this decision!
-
OK we get it LondonMix you won't sign our petition. As for the rest of you intellegent folks of East Dulwich (with kids or not), please sign our petition :)
-
161 and counting! and some one from the forest hill society is collecting manual signatures for it. Plus SLP is covering it too. So it is encouraging for both the community and the school to know that ppl care about their community nursery! Not everyone shares your view LondonMix and (dbboy?)!
-
Sorry guys, it is me again! Can we please have some more signatures? Pretty please :)
-
Indeed it is sad news! Potentially 60 families will be affected by this decision year in year out. The staff are going to be affected. Some members of staff have been there for years! Those of us who had kids on the list had to make other arrangements. Lewisham Council has to do something about this. Other schools in the area had budget cuts as well so they won't be able contribute with the running of the nursery.
-
LondonMix as I said I won't be getting your vote any time soon :) As for the rest of you, please support our petition! We need your signatures! Thank you
-
It was a cost cutting exercise (lunch time supervision). It is Lewisham Council which funds the schools for early years education not the school so they need to consider funding it differently. As for the falling numbers, they had 60 kids last year a lot of whom had working parents so that childminders dropped and picked up the kids. What better use of taxpayers money then early years education! Private nurseries are not oblidged to provide a teacher whereas school nurseries do!
-
LondonMix it is clear that I won't be getting your signature anytime soon. When my son went there last year there were 60 kids. Then the school had to get rid one full day (another cost cutting exercise). The nursery had its ofsted last year (Outstanding). They have since continued providing excellent early years education. My daughter was due to start in September along with others but we have now made alternative arrangements!
