Obtaining a mortgage in an ex-local authority block
VixSta replied to Arberama's topic in The Lounge
Hi Simon I have a residential mortgage on an ex-local authority flat (Southwark Council). We had no trouble getting the mortgage (Nationwide, applied May/June 2015). Happy to send you details of our mortgage broker if you would like. Also happy to discuss/give any other advice. Vicky -
Knocking wall between bathroom & toilet ex council flat
VixSta replied to ontheedge's topic in The Lounge
I'm also a leaseholder of an ex-council flat (Southwark Council is freeholder) and in my opinion, if I were you I would inform them of your intention to knock down the wall. We had our bathroom refurbished last year and didn't realise we were meant to inform the Council before we had the work carried out. We applied for retrospective permission and it cost us ?400 rather than the ?30 or ?40 it would have cost had we asked for permission before having had the work carried out. We did wonder whether the Council would ever know/find out that we'd had the work done, but thought it better to get the correct paperwork in case we get asked for it in the future when we sell. Depends on your risk appetite I guess! But Southwark Council are just money grabbers and I hate having them as the freeholder!! -
Do you have details of the leaseholders association please? Either a website or contact details? I tried to get in contact with the Leaseholders Council but never got a reply to my email.

Has anyone ever attended a Homeowner's Council meeting? I believe the next meeting is next Wednesday evening. I am thinking of attending but wandering if others have views/previous experiences of the meetings?

mortgage protection - how much do you pay?
VixSta replied to rover's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My boyfriend and I pay ?15.92 per month (this is one payment that covers both of us). This is for decreasing term cover if either of us dies or has a critical illness. It's with Legal & General but got it through our financial advisor. Happy to give you his details if you're interested. -

If you learn how to use punctuation, you may be in with a shot.

I saw a pair of Jimmy Choos in there the other week! I've donated to Save the Children recently, I donated items from the 'more expensive' end of my wardrobe, e.g. stuff from Coast and very nice dresses from Warehouse. Appreciate both these shops are high street and not designer, I still felt the quality of the items was more suitable for Save the Children than the other charity shops we have. I always enjoy a browse and am often surprised at some of the stuff people are prepared to donate when they could get a decent amount of money themselves on eBay.

Thanks to both of you. Will probably need to take a trip to the dump to get rid of a nasty old carpet so could definitely take the knives to the reuse centre.

Does anyone have any ideas of how I can get rid of some unwanted kitchen knives? I presume you shouldn't just throw them away in the normal household rubbish. Can they be recycled? Many thanks

Question about returning books at Southwark libraries
VixSta replied to se22cat's topic in The Lounge
Yes I believe you can return a book at any Southwark library. I borrowed a book from the library in Camberwell and returned it at Dulwich and there was no problem. -
Says on their Twitter page they will be open on 14th Nov, so this Friday! Look forward to trying them out!

It was complete chaos when I got to London Bridge just after 5.30. People were queuing to get in the station! I did join the queue but as I got closer I managed to have a look at the departure boards, all trains were either delayed or cancelled . So I left the queue and went and got the bus instead :-)
