  1. i think anyone that tunes into the brits expecting it to represent anything real about the music 'scene' rather than 'industry' is rather naive. i thought the fearne bits behind stage were classic, the fact that one of the winners when asked 'has it sunk in yet' replied 'well i've known since last year' and every time a phone line was mentioned a lengthy clause about being charged but not counted was added.
  2. so where should things be headed? complete subsidiarity in the political system? functionalism? anarcho syndicalism? how does one extract money from politics? or, is politics the 20th century religion that is spent and no longer represents how to run society? i feel a lounge just round the corner so i shall stop posting off topic > back on thread... recession down LL: well should keep some people happy, all those cursed delis and tat shops, all those kids emporiums and nice restaurants going going gone.
  3. oh yes cameron and boris would have run the show so differently...oh i suppose they may have taxed us less along the line and we wouldn't have a mayor. a case of cleopatras nose, if the reference is lost can i recommend war and peace by tolstoy (i am not meaning any of this to sound catty, more fun i hope) but as history has always shown no one person runs the band, yet the band plays on. so long as the bbc keeps making great telly and i can enjoy the smooth tones of radio 4 i'm happy as a man called larry, who ever he may be.
  4. happy happy happy joy joy joy gordon? you think he be the 'big man' that decide these things...i'm sure he wishes he had that much power. buying over priced houses on mortgages 5x an income, buying on 0% credit cards all that stuff that was *really* needed and now rots away wasted as a ridiculous interest rate is charged on late card repayments... you name it on all levels, everyone plays a part.
  5. ha! i roll in a 1986 saab, is that ok as it's swedish? the heated seats no longer work but hey it'll do me and my se5 existence ...
  6. ha! just been on the wd forum and noted that many threads in the lounge had not been posted on since mid jan and there a couple of threads dedicated to dissing east dulwich, fantastic. all this love would make ken proud of this great melting pot of a city. i have always loved how tolerance is preached for all except: clapham and 3 wheelers...
  7. nnnooooooooooooooooooo the 3 wheeler attacked again. do i need to repeat they sell because they are a dream on your back and your bank balance (osteopaths bills saved etc...) and they are not as expensive as many 4 wheelers out there. i love maclarens, indeed started with one but you try pushing 2 x 15 kilos up horniman gardens...blah blah blah zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz i'm loving the attack, bring it on. i grew up in an area which like dulwich had an east/north name share and this fighting never happened, how exciting. should we deploy the scarey kids by the train station/estate as the infantry? i'm with dulwich mum (and kate adie) here: lipstick on the frontline. oh, but i don't wear lipstick...so red 3 wheeler on the frontline.
  8. the safer neighbourhoods team are very helpful in south camberwell. whenever i have reported a concern (only twice) they have reacted promptly. i have said this on another thread, but they are the people to report not just an actual attack but what you see developing around you. we have to work with them as their eyes and ears on the ground. obviously don't waste their time but if you are concerned about a shift of mood from a group of kids and it feels serious let them know. also, i recently heard on R4 that if you see a dog being allowed or encouraged to rip up street furniture or feel that the people looking after the dog are not treating it well/handling it properly you can call the rspca and they can act on your behalf. again, like with the neighbourhood team let them know but don't waste their time.
  9. NO i don't want an se22 post code, i benefit from all the delights of east dulwich but get cheap cabs with my post code from town. leave se5 alone thank you, i at least am very happy with my 5 and 020 7 number...
  10. i think the ash tray sounds like a good diplomatic idea, making the point, giving them no excuse to carry on and not pointing the finger at anyone. if it persists then shoot to kill ...
  11. that somerfields is a joke. you can be stood at those tills long enough to have gone to sainsburys, picked up all the items that you wanted for less and be back in ED, whilst i'm still stood in the queue at somerfields.
  12. didn't mean to upset anyone about gatwick. i just happen to have lived most of my life way closer to heathrow and am still shocked at the noise people near airports accept as normal. i don't wish that noise on anyone and apologise to the people of gatwick, indeed anyone who has to suffer the 4 a.m. rumble of a boeing anouncing the start of a regular flow all day. personally on this one i'm an idealist hippy who, like with car use, hopes that the problem will go away. but i know it won't.
  13. pleased to see people taking a big issue seriously. the expansion of heathrow is ridiculous, it's about making more money for baa etc... are there any reasons why expansion of gatwick is not undertaken before adding more terminals and traffic at heathrow? thanks for letting me know about the consultation.
  14. well i have heard good things about charter and the trickle down effect of people with toddlers now choosing to opt state will have an impact onto secondary. this is exactly what happened where i grew up in london, the secondary had a bad rep but good teachers and parents who couldn't afford fees and mortgage. the school quickly picked up and i left with 9 o levels. not everyone did but those of us who wanted to pass could.
  15. pete dogherty (forgotten how to spell his over rated name)
  16. ha ha, love it bob fannyface would be the victorian version ... and it requires no stars.
  17. yes, but sadly they are both rather catchy... how about spaceface. that sounds more like a diss.
  18. when i read the southward bumpf it was about distance from school but i'm not 100% sure. i know that special needs etc.. are all taken into consideration.
  19. try using your local safer neighbourhoods team instead of the police station. i know that we have one in south camberwell and they are fantastic. i also used the herne hill team when i was on the brixton borders and again they were brilliant. they are there to deal with local problems and work closely with other neighbourhood services. so deal with non 999 type problems. each time i have called and left a message they have got straight back to me with all the info i needed and more, plus when needed they will check out your concerns. good on ken for bringing them in: they have a made a real difference to my attitude to the met and the support that i have received has been great.
  20. Moma new york, or does it have to be in the UK? if it's the uk: selfridges, just not the store that it used to be.
  21. i have merged them into one "spacebook", but i think it makes it sound to exciting. the things is, as this article points out, once you've signed up they never actually shut your account, all your details are kept live and can be viewed by 'interested' parties. a friend went back after leaving and couldn't believe that his account remained in tact and they automatically mailed all his buddies to let them know he was back.
  22. when i was looking around se22 i found that for the size we needed/money in our pocket most places off lordship lane were too small and pricey. we ended up with an se5 postcode, lovely sized house/garden, a few hundred meters from dog kennel hill primary (brilliant offsted report), near the supermarket, train station, lordship lane, bellenden road and 'denmark hill village' (ha!). basically a brilliant spot with great transport links and with many, many coffee/play options! i am a 100% state educated south londoner and would urge you to send your children to the local state schools. your kids will meet a totally diverse cross section of the community, get to know everyone down their street and like me make friends for life. my mum experienced great joy when i had passed all my o levels and a levels at the cost of ?15 a year compared to other parents who had thrown all the money they had at their kids education and still they did no better or even failed. also, by sending your children to the local state school you are adding to your community. the arguments are endless but the primary schools here are too good to waste money on fees. by the by, don't listen to the vitriol often expressed at parents/kids on this forum. it's just bitter and exhausting, you'll get to recognise who the complainers are and admit at your own peril that you like east dulwich today and shop in any of the new shops ...
  23. you may have already seen this article. i've always hated the idea of myspace and facebook and now i've read this article i'm happy to not be part of it, still preferring to meet friends down the pub... http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/jan/14/facebook
  24. welcome, definitely watch out for the whiners and nay sayers they are rather exhausting .... as an unusual name i have to ask if you are who i suspect you may be, without getting too personal did you grow up in south west london and have 2 sisters? if not sorry..
  25. re: housing association and your flat. no please don't worry, this was in reference to the empty flats on the estate, not ones that are occupied. but as i mentioned i have not seen any signs of this deal coming into affect.
