The Dreaded Royal Mail 'Something For You' Cards
mrsilencio replied to JickieC's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I've had 2 "missed you" cards in the last couple of weeks. I was definitely in and even checked the bell was working. No chance they even tried. Even more annoying, I went to Peckham and they wouldn't let me have the parcel addressed to my wife as I only had a photo of her ID and not the real thing. -
Tuesday - NUT Strike Action - Sharing Child Care
mrsilencio replied to WorkingMummy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Did I say anything about falling standards? My point was referring to the assessment upheaval and the introduction of a new curriculum - can you tell me what you know about the entirely new set of tests you speak of and whether you think the new curriculum gives children a balanced education? Can you tell me if you think schools chasing thresholds in reading, writing and maths gives a child a balanced education? Can you tell me whether you think that increasing class sizes paired with reduced teaching support and unqualified teachers taking the place of those with years of professional experience is a good thing? Out of interest, could you tell where from what viewpoint you are speaking and how you have come to be such an authority on what teachers think and how the education system is, in actual fact, thriving now more than ever? Just to clarify what you quoted above, with regards to teacher's pay progression, this is not automatic as quoted above, it is based on "performance". Granted, one of the reasons for calling for the strike was terms and conditions of teachers; that isn't necessarily the reason why so many teachers chose to follow the strike. With regards to the accountability issue, could you show me where in the NUT's statement for strike there was any mention of OFSTED? -
Tuesday - NUT Strike Action - Sharing Child Care
mrsilencio replied to WorkingMummy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
DaveR, you might want to read something more uo to date, like this year's SATs results. You think that there isn't a problem when only 53% of 11 year olds met the "expected standard" in reading, writing and maths? It amazes me that, despite the political turmoil recently with the lies and misinformation given out by the Leave campaign prior to the referendum that people continue to only believe what a person with a vested interest tells you. Have you ever been in a school and spoken to a teacher? I spoke to lots of people during the match yesterday, and not a single person was there because of pay. -
Sorry to hear that dippybird, I hope you were well insured? As is happens, I had a call from the police 2 days ago, saying they have recovered mine. Apparently they found it in Bexleyheath, fully intact. As the insurance has already paid out and I'm no longer insured, I don't know where I stand with it, or what I should do tbh. I'm mainly interested to find out if they caught whoever took it.

Tuesday - NUT Strike Action - Sharing Child Care
mrsilencio replied to WorkingMummy's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I too am a teacher, striking on Tuesday, and very grateful for the support of most of you on this thread. Unfortunately, as not every teacher in my school is striking (due to being in different unions and fear of reprisal mainly), my school is staying open, with the exception of the classes whose teachers will be on strike. As such, some (by no means all) parents are blaming me personally for being selfish, and causing them to take a day off work. I cannot add much to what has already been said above, but will add this. I am not striking for pay. I am striking against proposals and a changing landscape which affect the education of other people's children. Class sizes are increasing and funding is being cut, with no clear plan. Good teachers are leaving in their droves, due to workload and a system which fails to support them, instead holding them accountable for problems that were forced upon them. I am sacrificing a day's pay for the sake of other people's children; it would be nice if the parents of those children would care as much about their children's education and not begrudge having to make other arrangements for one day. Parents and teachers need to unite on this issue, not be forced into a situation that causes conflict. I may not agree with the timing of the strike, but I will still stand up for the reasons behind it. I would just like to add that before teaching I spent 10 years in another career. I took a pay cut of over 50% and work a damn sight harder now than I have ever done. I have not taken a single sick day, work over 12 hours a day and through holidays and weekends but I do not begrudge any of this because I feel I am doing something important. Whether or not this is recognised by the general population isn't important. What is important is that the rights of a child to education are upheld and, in a society that is prosperous by global standards, that this education is provided to as high of a level as can be afforded. If every one of us - teachers along with the rest of us - stood up for that, then I feel that we might get somewhere. -
James, I think that would be great. There's is definitely demand in the area. I have used one on a residential street in Putney which I believe is Wandsworth borough. I grabbed a picture off Google Streetview and attached here. ------------------------------------------------------- > I have a query with council officers why we can;t > deploy ground anchors in the road. Sadly, I sold my bike today and now have no wheels for the first time in 4 years. Insurance premium was just too high after the old one being nicked. Shame the scallywags have won - I hope others are more fortunate. At least I may be able to sleep at night now (no doubt dreaming of the days I could jump on my bike at weekends and get out of London!).

Ive only just seen it, but James Barber replied to my post asking what was being done: mes Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Hi mrsilencio, > The offer of free ground motorbike anchors is > still in place for all East Dulwich ward residents > - any resident can email with their details so we > can organise this. > We also have free motorbike property marking kits > - again any resident can email me their contact > details and we can get this organised. > > I will ask our Safer Neighbourhood Panel Ward > Panel to make motorbike crime number one priority. > The Police can get a list of all registered > motorbikes in the ward and proactively visit > offering our free anchors and property marking > kits. Thanks for your reply on this James, that sounds good. I have considered the same thing with regards to petitioning for secure motorcycle parking. Many of us in the area don't have to option for putting in a secure ground anchor. That said, after my bike being stolen, my insurance renewal has just come in and I'm having to admit defeat. Previously paid ?250, and now they want ?2500. Feel like the insurance company are trying to rob me a second time. I would have been better off if I hadn't made a claim, so now I'm going to have to sell my bike as can't afford the insurance. So think about your insurance premiums if you are considering making a claim! Seems we now live in a high risk area.

So let me get this right, Luker2100 and KatieHolland85 both had bikes stolen on Sunday night? A friend of someone I know also had one stolen in Forest Hill last night too. This is getting crazy. Luker2100, what kind of security did you have?

mrsilencio replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hi James I started a thread about Motorbike crime in the area, as this seems to be a real problem at the moment. Would you mind taking a look as I would be interested to hear your take on the issue and whether the council is aware of the seriousness of the issue. Thanks John -

Sorry to hear that. Surely the police should be doing more as this really is ridiculous. The thieves seem to be on patrol every night at the moment looking for something to steal.Every time I hear a moped in the night I wonder what the damage will be in the morning. Katie, do you mind me asking what tyoe of chain you were using? I was in Putney at the weekend, and the residential street had a proper motorbike lockup with ground anchors. It would be good if we could get something like that in the area.
-
Yeah, I was told the same thing. The policewoman said they need to change the legislation as they are using the battle. She admitted there is a really problem at the moment in the area. Not just scooters though, some of them are going in the back of vans so make sure you are chaining to a fixed object!
-
Yeah, it really is ridiculous. I'm being interviewed by the police tonight. For the top box! They didn't do anything when a ?4000 bike was stolen in broad daylight with witnesses, but for ?100 worth of damage in the middle of the night they want to come and pay me a visit. Can't wait to hear them explain that one.
-
Yeah, sorry I know what you mean about seeing the idiots on mopeds. I really just meant if you have anything damaged/stolen. Easy to just think it's not even worth reporting given the fact the police won't do anything. They did nothing when my bike was stolen, but told me I should have reported this straight away so they could have sent a squad car! Good to have it record though, just so they can see the impact of closing down local police stations.

Top box was empty! Don't ask me why I locked it...

Ok, so a previous thread about my motorbike being stolen was moved to the lost, found and stolen section, but it was actually meant as a warning to other motorcycle users as much as anything. Nothing has been stolen this time so hopefully it is fine here. A month after my motorbike being stolen in broad daylight from outside a busy pub, and four days after getting a replacement bike, my topbox was broken into, removed and smashed to pieces last night. I was woken up by a loud crash at 2am, and the sound of a moped tearing off down the road. When I looked out of the window, I saw the damage... If anyone has a bike of scooter in the area (I'm by The Castle on Crystal Palace Rd), I urge you to make sure it is well chained up, covered and any luggage is removed whenever you aren't using it. This time it was in the middle of the night, and secure, but as I said, my old bike was stolen in the middle of the day on a weekend. Also, keep a lookout for anyone (or more likely two) people on a scooter looking suspicious, and please report anything to the police so they can build a picture. Clearly this kind of crime is on the rise, as until the last couple of months I've had no trouble at all. So far these people have cost me over ?2000, even with insurance, and I am but a poorly paid teacher!

Anyone have experience of applying for roof terrace permission?
mrsilencio replied to mrsilencio's topic in The Lounge
Thanks for the input everyone. The terrace would be fairly unobtrusive as far as I can tell, particularly if I set back the barrier so that it isnt seen/cant see any of the gardens below. Even as it stands, it doesnt really overlook anyone. Asherplanning, I may send you a PM after my architect friend has got back to me if thats ok? -
Hi I live in a top floor flat with a flat roof, and am desperate for some outdoor space. I have looked at moving, but cannot afford anywhere remotely nearby with a garden. So, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience of applying for planning permission for a roof terrace. My property faces the side of rows of houses, rather than toward the back of them so cant see into windows etc, and I live a few doors down from commercial premises that have a flat rood with access. It would be great to be able to step out onto a (small!) roof terrace, but wonder if it would just be a waste of time even applying for permission from Southwark council? John

In reply to the second message, I think you need to consider context, both of where (a community forum), when (shortly after reading and seeing something I felt seemed a bit odd) and how (a quick post to non-judgemental people, without agonizing over how it would be pulled apart) it was posted. I was saying what I saw in the moment as thought people might have been interested, or be better placed to assess whether I should do anything with it. I gave a lot of detail as that's just what I happened to type at that time. Having reported, and given more information to people actually able to properly assess it, I don't now feel the need to expand on my description as it was never intended to be a literary wanted poster... This is still a community forum right? Good folk, sharing thoughts, not calling people weird for trying to be helpful...?
