Article about closure of Hooper's Bar and its future
cle replied to Sue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I find it as shame as some backstreet pubs (like the Gowlett) can still work, although I wonder how profitable they are. But I think it would probably need to hit a different demo to the previous incarnation and be a bit more like the Victoria Inn... decent food, wifi, child friendly, craft rather than camra beers etc etc -
Trying to buy a house in this area is near impossible

Otta, they're just numbers. I know 500k/1m seem symbolic, but it just creeps up and happens. I couldn't believe when someone I knew paid 250k for a one bed flat, but now it would be a steal. People are aren't idiots for buying 500k houses which then become 1m houses. The people that don't are surely the fools. -

Which came first - product of bad luck/unfortunate upbringing, or the opportunism and greedy to scam a few lazy quid through lies? -
Amy Lame' as new Labour MP for Dulwich/W Norwood?
cle replied to Nigello's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
She sounds interesting, and that she's actually lived a life. People in politics should represent all parts of society. I'd be keen to hear what she stands for though, locally and nationally. Better someone a bit kooky than another career politician, a bored law firm partner or shiny grad scheme twerp like Chuka. -

Where we are (Ivanhoe/Grove Hill Rd triangle) seems to be mental. ?1m houses are not a rarity and it's quite scary stuff. I guess it's also overspill from the Grove Park/Camberwell Grove market as well as ED/Bellenden ones. But on the other hand, if you get ?1m for your house, then it is worth that. And property doesn't have a static value, nor do areas. They're constantly evolving and shifting, so you could never say it's "too much" because the market dictates that. And you can guarantee corresponding areas are going up similarly so it's not unique to the area. Anyone tempted by the HS1 Javelin trains? Could have a palace by Seasalter! -

May also be to try and see if you're out, or alternatively - to do a recce on what is within grabbing distance from your front door. So rather than ignoring it, it's best to always open (have a good chain fitted) to get them to bugger off. And don't keep car keys/phones/loose change within eyesight and reach of the front door or letterbox. -
Major lols to the post talking about evangelicals and yam eating. So true - you'd think human culture (London especially) should be static and not evolve. What about all the middle class white folk pushed out of Brixton post-Windrush!? Should the new black population have not opened up patty shops etc and respected the white culture of the time?! Ridiculous. Bellenden Road is ace. I worry it'll get a bit LL, but for the moment, it's independent, not packed with chains/estate agents/buses and enterpreneurial. Nowt wrong with a good, indie coffee shop or deli. Not everything has to be appropriate to all income levels and common tastes! Rye Lane and the High Street are still there for the local community and aren't going anywhere. Louisa, you can pick up your fish heads and get your weave did with aplomb. Oh wait, you're just a (likely middle class) a keybaord warrior, not a member of the 'real Peckham'.

I don't know it that well but what a first impression and a sign. The bits around Ladywell/Crofton Park/Hither Green stations is cheaper and less rough - unless you're at the Catford and Lewisham ends. Crystal Palace seems a popular one these days too.

How to dispose of estate agents sign?
cle replied to ellieaness's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Gumption seems to be lacking in this case. OP ignored the many serious responses (erm, call them... and so on) and went victim-y on the slight ribbing. Bet the sign is still there and no calls have been made though. Can we see a picture of this non-standard, elephantine sign, with scaling? It sounds gargantuan compared to the 1000s of others that we are all au fait with and have tackled. How on Earth would we win the war today etc... -

I can't understand the passiveness of people that would have this sitting in their garden for 2 year before querying it?! Comedic fish slap needed. Bin it for heaven's sake...or take it down to LL and drop it off at the agents if you can be arsed. -
Have done so, including requesting trains until midnight from Victoria (Mon-Sat) rather than an incremental lateness, and a decent service on Sunday too.

An update: http://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/news/latest-news/southeastern-consults-on-changes-to-timetable-in-december-2014/ and a PDF at the bottom of that. But in short: - Later Dartford via DH/PR trains, Mon-Sat - No mention of Sunday just yet. - Victoria to Gillingham trains (some of which stop at DH in morning peak, i.e. the wonderfully clean and quiet 08:30) to stop off-peak hourly too, giving three trains each hour to DH. Will become Dover trains, so a direct train from the area out to Bromley, Faversham, Canterbury and Dover - might be useful?

Not to mention whatever floods might have happened, even last week. It's too tenuous. Heathrow is in the best place, objectively. It's a pain living under the paths sometimes though. But it's part of what makes up London and its economy and success.

I wouldn't assume anything about burglary. Yes it could be kids, but no harm opening the door or being a bit more on guard - especially if you read this forum and see all the various ways, tricks and yes, times.

Tell him to f*** off and if he persists, pepper spray him square in the boat. Having reported him to the Police beforehand, and documented how you've felt threatened in your own property.

Jeremy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Victoria Inn (during the day) is very baby/child > friendly. Seconded. The right hand bar is basically a family area and they even have a separate playroom with a camera for parental lushes to keep an eye! The Monty less so (more the dog crowd).

People just riding the wave - they never have the wealth themselves but if 10 years ago they bought a flat for 100k and moved 2/3 times (doing some improvements to each place) it's easy to see where you'd get the 200k equity for a deposit. Millionaires and even people on 250k+ don't buy 1m houses - they either buy much bigger or quite often rent in fancier areas - with a main house elsewhere.
-
Is there much of a description? I wonder if there should be a 'master' mugging and a master 'burglary' thread - so that seemingly isolated or unconnected incidents might actually be linked and fragmented bits of the story/description/themes might be shared. It is supposed to be a community resource, after all - and the internet allows info, warnings and advice to have a much wider reach than ever possible, even than neighbourhood watch groups. For example, it's not far from Belvoir Road, with its own thread...might there be something in common. Maybe I'm getting a bit Marple and carried away!

Just as well everyone is different. If you don't like queuing, you'll keep the queue shorter for those of us who are prepared to. Equally queuers mgiht not be able to get walk-in tables due to the 'bookers'. But there you go.

Where is the Christmas tree in Dulwich ?
cle replied to tallulah71's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Slightly tangential, but where is a good place to buy trees, and that is trading early? Need one up for this weekend due to relatives (kids) visiting. -
New entrance to Denmark Hill station
cle replied to youandiaredominoes's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Have just thought of an example - a few years ago when I commuted there, there was an AMT at Hammersmith (the H&C line station) which had hatches/servers for both sides of the barrier. So this could work. The real problem would be that Southeastern would no doubt lease to the highest bidder - so that rather than anything independent and interesting, we'd probably get a Costa. -
Admin - could these names be reinstated once the Defamation Act (2013) comes into play? It is aimed at reducing the UK's targeting for libel tourism, but has a clause about opinions being fine if clearly stated as an opinion and not aimed at causing serious harm to rhe reputation of the business. Surely commenting on a terrible meal or some bad service doesn't quite warrant that? Especially as this is the EDF and hardly the front cover of The Sun. For reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defamation_Act_2013

New entrance to Denmark Hill station

I meant in addition to being a cafe/shop in the space and serving passers-by - they could also have a hatch for people within the station. -

The (now sadly closed) Gastronomia cafe on Columbia Road had a coffee-only hatch. Perhaps they could fashion one using the old door for 'rail-side' customers to use?
