I hate to tempt fate but after having mice coming in from the cold for 2 years running, I got an electronic deterrent last year and haven't seen them again this winter (yet..) Yes to the moths! Blooming things. I use those sticky traps for them - attract the males but not the females (or vice versa) so it cuts down the mating at least.

Couldn't recommend Outlook highly enough. They did our loft 5 or 6 years ago now and no issues at all. I particularly liked that they put a team on your job and only your job, so the team are not trying to do multiple lofts at the same time. This means it gets done much quicker and with better continuity on the project.

Water just gone on Landells road. I guess it?s not worth reporting as they already know of issue?

Looking for recommendations for a dyslexia tutor
damzel replied to Boomdeay's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Another big thumbs up for Toe by Toe. We used it home, started with my dyslexic daughter around 7yo and it was a real turning point for her with reading. I wish there was a similar tool for writing. She?s 10 and still very challenged with writing and spelling. -
Secondary school - kids with working parents
damzel replied to damzel's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Thanks all, I feel less concerned about after school now. I think the school holidays will be a challenge though. My daughter loves (non sporty) holiday clubs - it's a shame they don't cater for y7/8. -
Primary school kids are fairly easy for working parents - after school club or child minders can look after them until 6pm. During school holidays, we are really lucky to have so many great holiday clubs available in this area. None of the above is available for secondary school children though so what do Y7/8 do? It seems a bit young to be master of their own destiny for 3 hours after school and during school holidays. My daughter is still a couple of years away from secondary but I would be very interested to hear what options are available when she gets there.

Thanks all - particularly like the Nunhead centre - that looks great but unfortunately they are booked. We have altered our plans a bit so we don't need a room now. Much appreciate everyone's input though which will no doubt be useful in the party years to come :)
-
Never heard of that one - thanks - however, they are fully booked in Feb sadly.

Can anyone recommend a room for hire locally for a 10 year old's birthday party with around 12 kids and a few adults? Not expensive and we want to bring our own food. Don't want to be rattling around a big hall really. Thanks! Edited to add that we have the entertainment organised, just need a venue to host.

Silvester Rd post collection shambles
damzel replied to bels123's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I was queuing earlier today but gave up when some people who had just picked up their parcels, said it was likely to be a 1.5hr wait from where I was in the queue. Apparently, only one man on duty and he wasn't even supposed to be working today. Are they trying to make the service as awful as possible so that we stop complaining about it moving to Peckham? Incidentally, the sweet shop on corner of Crystal and Goodrich take Amazon parcels. I usually use it, don't know why I didn't this time! -
Royal Mail Sorting Office Closure Meeting..
damzel replied to DulwichFox's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I would strongly suggest you call them first and check as I once had a delivery card from Brixton and drove all the way over, only to find that Sylvester Rd had run out of their own cards so were using Brixton's! My parcel was about 400yds from my home... Shopping robot spotted on Lordship Lane
damzel replied to Carrie's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
So how exactly do you arrange for it to collect your stuff and deliver it? Do you have to be a member of an exclusive club or something?? -

That must be very stressful for you all. https://www.eric.org.uk is a good source of information. -
Southwark Kerbside Strategy Consultation Opens!!!
damzel replied to Burbage's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As a cyclist and a pedestrian, I only struggle for visibility when tall sided vehicles are parked close to junctions. Therefore a good compromise would be to only restrict tall vehicles (vans/lorries for example) from parking in the 7.5m zone, but allow cars to park there. This would resolve the "wide-open road causes speeding" theory (of which I agree) and also make junctions safer as pedestrians and cyclists will have more visibility. -
response to enquiry re Rye Lane Cycling
damzel replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I complained about this stretch of road a year (or so) ago when they resurfaced it at the bus stop (which wasn't that bad) but didn't continue to the dangerous bit that you refer to. I didn't get a response and after one too many near misses whilst trying to avoid the holes, I changed my route. peckhamside Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Having had a good response (it seems) to complaint > to councellor about poor road surface at top of > Rye lane, can something be done about road surface > at Kings on the Rye junction as it was once known, > going East from Goose Green the road is bad, which > causes risks for cyclists at a busy junction when > they need to concentrate on traffic and cannot > swerve around pot holes. -
response to enquiry re Rye Lane Cycling
damzel replied to Renata Hamvas's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Going south it's impossible to use, badly positioned lamp posts, bollards etc. and pedestrians use it. It is far safer to cut across the pedestrian area (slowly) I always give pedestrians priority and cycle very slowly. Going north it's not much better because it's difficult to position yourself properly at the lights from that angle, street furniture in the way etc. The cycle lane down alongside the path on the Rye is ridiculous, so dangerous when buses are parked because pedestrians walk straight onto it from between buses as they don't know it's a cycle path. I'm not a fan of slippery blue cycle paint but it would be a short term fix here. -
Thumbs up from me too. Fitted new taps and repaired a leak. Nice fella too and a good price.

Insufficient visual harm - what do you think?
damzel replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It's rather ironic that a law firm have illegally put a sign up, for that reason alone they should be forced to take it down. Doesn't really say much about their business ethic does it. -

A Bike Train is running this afternoon and looks like a great way to learn some routes http://southwarkcyclists.org.uk/events/bike-train-awayday-weekender/. -
Thanks for your thoughts katgod. Yes we are getting help and doing our best to help her rationalise her fears. We do not avoid parks with dogs usually but this is about her learning to ride a bicycle which is a big enough challenge for her already, without having to confront her fear of dogs at the same time.

Thanks Goldilocks, you read my mind! I had looked at the Velodrome site and thought exactly that. However, my daughter is nearly 8 and is tall for her age so the Frog session won't work I don't think. I might give them a call and see what they say. She's extremely nervous about this type of thing so I need to tread carefully else she'll never do it.
-
Thank you! Some great suggestions there and I will try them out. I didn't even know Lettsom Gardens existed and am looking forward to checking it out - sounds perfect!
-
Great suggestions thanks although she is nervous even with stabilisers so not sure grass would be good or the narrow path at the library - does the Picture Gallery have a paved area? I'll look into the velodrome but it might be a bit soon, my daughter is much more nervous about this type of thing than would be considered normal. That's why the dog issue is such a big deal, kind of another excuse I think.
-
My daughter is terrified of dogs which makes learning to ride a bike in the park extremely difficult. Is there anywhere around that's relatively dog free that would be good to learn to ride a bike? Maybe a dis-used car park or quiet cul-de-sac?
