I think it should probably proceed, because the damage will have already largely been done, with the travelling/mixing. But I guess it depends what happens next.. how the infections among the athletes (and within Tokyo overall) play out over the next few days/weeks.

Zero tolerance of racism and hate crime in sport

If these people have to wait for a groundswell of public opinion before they realise that racism is bad, there isn't really much hope for them is there? -
Rye Lane NEWSFLASH buses to return !

I don't think Rye Lane is "unfit". I do agree it is scruffy. But the reality is that the whole road operates as a quasi-market, with open fronted shops spilling out onto the street. There is certainly room for improvement in terms of upkeep of premises and refuse arrangements, but it's also probably unrealistic to expect it to be wonderfully neat and tidy. -

Seems quite likely there will be some restrictions re-imposed (if not "lockdown"). I imagine schools and shops will stay open, but hospitality will be forced to close again when the deaths go over a couple of hundred daily.

Measures in shops / pubs / restaurants post 19 July

Nigello Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Hand sanitiser is really not that useful, is it? Yeah I am also of the opinion that ventilation is more important (and reducing time in indoor public places). Hand sanitiser is still a good idea for shops though, where people are likely to be touching when browsing goods. And also for kids who find it hard to stop touching their face and other random stuff. -

There are plenty of people out there with their eyes wide open, who have done their research, and are not buying into the fearmongering and this big pharma conspiracy! And the hospitals are filling up with 'em.

I'm with you, Foxicus. Many people have not been vaccinated (largely their own fault), and many have only had one jab (especially amongst the younger people who are understandably itching for a proper night out). This is all happening at a very unfortunate time. A mask in indoor/enclosed public spaces is a small measure - trivial almost. Why on earth wouldn't you wear one?

With "three lions"... I always interpreted the "it's coming home" climax as a sort of imaginary terrace chant... depicting the improbable fantasy of victory. The way the song gradually builds from a sad/dejected mood, through to cautious optimism, through to this unlikely imaginary celebration. Even as someone who never liked football all that much (never liked the tribalism and aggression), this song was good natured, self-deprecating, charming even... extremely well crafted and catchy. 25 years later... it seems the original intention (or maybe just my interpretation of it?) has been lost! And I think it's fair to say that the "it's coming home chant" is wearing a bit thin now. BTW... last night. England were good for a bit. Terrible for a lot. Rarely a threat. The close result probably flatters them.

Genuine question for people who refuse to wear masks.
fishbiscuits replied to Ronnijade's topic in The Lounge
Bit more nuanced I feel... as the vaccinated can still contract and spread (albeit with a lower probability). As can schoolchildren. But of course vaccine hesitancy is a major issue too. I will be wearing masks in shops and avoiding public transport for a long while to come... -

Yep. The spike in cases is just beginning, I feel. It's going to shoot up massively, I just hope that vaccines prevent the deaths returning to 100s a day. -
I know you probably don't trust "the mainstream media", preferring to get your info from right wingers, anti-vaxxers, and conspiracy theorists, but this article explains it fairly well : https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-57610998

niledynodely Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I know that RRR is standard practice but don't you > think ARR is what most people would expect? No because the RRR describes the effectiveness of the drug... it is an intuitive measure. The ARR incorporates the prevalence of the disease, so has to be taken in context. -
It really isn't a very useful piece of info. All it really tells us is that the vaccines unfortunately don't save everyone, and the elderly are more susceptible. Compare the number of people dying now, to the number of people dying last time we had 25K+ cases a day (Nov/Dec for example). It is a different order of magnitude.
-
Yes - The fact that the number of hospital admissions are now skewed towards younger/unvaccinated shows how well the vaccines are working - Vaccines are working well across all age groups - But they are not perfect and unfortunately some people still fall critically ill. Mainly older. - No fully-vaccinated person under 50 has died from delta variant

Genuine question for people who refuse to wear masks.
fishbiscuits replied to Ronnijade's topic in The Lounge
Not been on public transport in 18 months. I walk/run most places. Drive or take a taxi for longer distances. I'd put supermarkets above 80% actually, for mask wearing. As with most measures, masks probably only help a little bit, but nevertheless definitely worthwhile. -
Yet again... citing extreme right wing sources known for misinformation. Just stop it... for gods sake.. https://www.medpagetoday.com/infectiousdisease/covid19/90536 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America%27s_Frontline_Doctors

Genuine question for people who refuse to wear masks.
fishbiscuits replied to Ronnijade's topic in The Lounge
In recent months, talk of vaccine effectiveness has shifted from protecting against infection, to protecting against hospitalization. I do not know how effective Pfizer/AZ are against contracting the Delta variant, but I suspect the answer is... "not great, but it helps". Israel probably thought they had the problem cracked, with most adults fully vaccinated with Pfizer, and both cases and deaths at a very low level... almost "background noise". But all of a sudden, delta variant is taking over and cases are spiking. They have re-introduced masks in indoor spaces. I think we are about to see Covid sweep through the nation very aggressively indeed. With no further lockdowns likely, government policy will be to let it run its course.. most of us will catch it. The vaccinations will be a massive help but I think the deaths will go back up into the 100s every day before the end of summer. (I hope I am wrong, of course). -

Spartacus Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Whilst we hope not to need them soon Cases are rising VERY quickly. The spike in cases we're about to see will (I think) dwarf the previous one. Even if vaccinated you can still get pretty ill for a week or so... I think we'll be wearing masks for a long time to come. -

Not debating the basic principle, Alex. That as more and more people are vaccinated - and given that the vaccines are not by any means perfect - eventually the number of cases amongst the vaccinated could be expected to outnumber those amongst the unvaccinated. -

LOL... yeah I didn't really follow the maths there either... Also, our measures of effectiveness have changed over time. I don't think Pfizer is 90% effective at infection from delta variant.
