  1. The OP is an hysterical overreaction, but nevertheless, I'm not really sure that kids riding on the pavement is a great idea at the moment.
  2. Freshwater species like catfish are not that common.. I would be quite impressed if you managed to find it fresh, but of course happy to be proved wrong. Of course one option would be to substitute with another firm white fish, fresh from the market or fishmongers. How close would something like haddock be to catfish?
  3. Penguin68 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > although most face coverings will > partially at least protect others from you Isn't this exactly the point? If everyone (or at least the majority) wears one then there's a pretty big benefit.
  4. Yes, blah speaks the truth. Whether this is the right time to relax restrictions is a matter of opinion (I also believe that the numbers have not yet tailed off enough). But it is undeniably true that it's a balancing act - and a very tricky one. Of course in absolute terms lives are more important than the economy. It's easy for me to say that, sitting at home working on full pay, sipping a coffee in my dressing gown. But the economy is not just about statistics and national debt for politicians to argue over. It's about people suffering financial hardship, losing businesses they've worked their entire life for, major employers disappearing. There does eventually come a point where the balance of the greater good starts shifting towards these things.
  5. With the current trend for old-fashioned names.. Rosie, Poppy, etc.. surely only a matter of time before Bruce, Nigel, and Gary become trendy. (Maybe quite a long time, though...)
  6. Oh I see.. yes it's the first storey that doesn't align. All very strange.
  7. Perhaps because the road isn't quite flat, so the rightmost "unit" is higher than the rest? Still... looks a bit crap to me.

  9. Why don't the windows line up?
  10. So which is it? The government brought in restrictions too late, and haven't been strict enough? Or picnics, games of football, and going out for coffee on Lordship Lane are all fine? Can't have it both ways.

Only I am aloud to take snipes from my > lofty perch, on my moral high ground..... Because someone recommended a supplier of eggs, with a large minimum order. So shelf life is relevant. Nobody is talking about deliberately stockpiling them.
  12. If pedestrians are walking side by side, when someone comes the other way they should really switch to single file, if possible. Whether the person coming the other way is walking, running, in a wheelchair, or on a skateboard.
  13. I totally agree with Daddio, social distancing is a collective effort.
  14. It's all going to be very gradual, isn't it. The biggest factor will be individual behaviour, which as we've seen, is already becoming more relaxed.

The rise of belief in conspiracy theories, > the rejection of science (even around this > pandemic) and experts. OMG don't even get me started on those nutters. I've had to unfriend people on Facebook this week, because of 5G/Covid nonsense. And also idiots actually defending Trump's disinfectant episode. Also found out that an old friend of mine is a flat earther (she is also a medical doctor... go figure...)

Put all of that to one side.. it is fiction, unrealistic, and downright absurd. Treat it purely as stylised revenge fantasy (e.g. Inglorious Basterds).
  17. Certainly these are risks with intensive farming around the world (swine flu example cited repeatedly) but I do have specific issues with the concept of live/wild/exotic animals in food markets, specifically. Sorry, didn't mean to suggest you in particular were pandering to anything... more the general "zeitgeist" among left/liberal leaning social media acquaintances, who seem to think that questioning these things is ignorant or hypocritical. But the reality is that superstitious and irrational beliefs are strongly coupled with the market for these animals.
  18. While on some level the type of exotic produce seen in these markets could be seen as analogous to the British eating game meat, I do have concerns. To me, it seems fairly logical that selling exotic imported wild animals (often alive), in a crowded fish/meat market is problematic. Who knows what parasites, bacteria and viruses they could be carrying, the the environment is perfect for them to spread. Also, I'm not inclined to indulge cultural practices of consuming exotic (sometimes rare/endangered) animals, or animal parts, for supposed medicinal purposes. It's a regressive practice, and endangers wildlife. I see no sense in pandering to it for the sake of appearing "woke".
  19. Schitts Creek and Ozark are both good! I have also enjoyed : Mr Robot Man in the High Castle Altered Carbon (season 1, anyway) Homeland Hunters (not everyone liked it, but I did!) Narcos Peaky Blinders Sex Education

I'm a bit more "philosophical" about it. It doesn't make me angry as such, but if you've made your choice - cricket in the park and a stroll with a gelato - then don't make out that you've been let down.
  21. Agree with many of the points. Lockdown should have come a couple of weeks earlier. Should be more restrictive, maybe enforced more proactively. This would all make a difference. But there's only so much you can do, you can't physically lock people in their homes. It was always going to be a collective effort. Even on this forum, many are in favour of popping out for a coffee or ice cream. And defending sunbathing and picnics in the park. If that's the way you feel then fair enough, everyone's entitled to their own opinion, but it is not indicative of a city taking serious precautions. The America comparison doesn't hold up for me, we don't have the same concept of civil liberty being so intertwined with right wing politics.

And there's no way you can possibly know that. Yeah the govt royally screwed up procurement of PPE for hospitals (and the advice not to wear masks I now believe was mainly because of this), but ultimately they have told us to stay at home as much as possible and maintain a distance from others. But people aren't doing that. So if I may return your lovely compliment, you are talking absolute crap.

    Heresy?

I haven't been joining in every Thurs, but we've done it a couple of times. It's a nice thing to do, and I have heard several accounts of NHS staff appreciating it - finding it moving, even. As others have mentioned... I guess when the worst of this is over, we'll find out whether this new found appreciation of our health service is really genuine.
  24. Road closures sound appealing (I've not used my car at all this part month). But how do you deal with residents of closed streets, who might need to use their car?
  25. Yep. I go jogging at quiet times, and give everyone plenty of space. But most other people don't seem interested in keeping any sort of distance. Joggers oblivious to others, couples walking side by side not even moving over one inch. People sitting out front of their houses right next to the pavement. People sitting in the park together smoking. Bloody idiots everywhere.
