Attempted robbery on Upland Road/ Dunstans Road
ClareC replied to JFminustheK's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
I was mugged in Camberwell @ 7 years ago, time does heal but you will always be more aware (probably a good thing). I came close (I think) to a similar incident to this near where this happened @ 645 pm one dark winters evening pushing a double buggy!! I saw the suspicious character from afar and crossed over, and then again walking in the road (lightest part) i walked as fast as possible to the light of Barry Road. These people are scum, makes me so angry it's a risk to use a mobile whilst mobile / walk home with a laptop. Sadly I think you just have to accept it and take care. -
That's great, thank you both. Will do some researching on Cape Cod

Is it child friendly? Any tips? Etc etc I'm thinking about taking the kids to Disneyland (even though I can't think of anywhere worse, but I really wanted to go as a child and never did so want them to have that opportunity). We Would spend ad few days there and then move on somewhere more for us, Florida doesn't appeal, San Francisco I like but that means a long flight home so considering maybe a few days NY and then Nantucket for the beach/relaxing part. Any tips / other suggestions welcome! Thank you

Btw mine birth had nasty sores, to the extent it hurt them to touch them and my son couldn't walk due to the ones on the back of his leg. My daughter was given antibiotics but the Austrian dr recommended savlon for my son (who had it much worse) which did work. Good luck x

Sounds familiar! We had this with our son last week (same age as your daughter) and our daughter two weeks before (age 4). Both had 2 days of very high temperatures and being very ill, after that they were happy and felt well it was just the itching - neither would let us put cream of any description on the spots. We religiously gave calpol every 6 hours, kept temperature down if spiked with cool baths and also gave them piriton. My son was particularly ill and we ended up seeing a Dr in Austria (the spots came out day one of a family ski trip). He was prescribed an antihistamine medicine that was given once a day and was magic! Worked absolute wonders and far better than piriton. We also put savlon on the spots that looked particularly angry. Both children were really ill two days after the main spots came out. Good luck, it's horrible but my two both turned round really quickly from the "high temperature" two days.

working mums - role models required!
ClareC replied to Jtpickers's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hi Jo, My children are a bit younger than 5 (age 4 and nearly 3) however, I am also a lawyer and have managed to work part time fitting in with the children whilst maintaining decent work. I have been working as GC for a medium sized company 3 days a week for the last couple of years. Basically they needed a GC but couldn't afford one full time, I was happy to do the role but only wanted part time so a perfect combination. I've recently reduced to two days and started to take on project work, mainly for blue chip companies so a great contrast. I have just taken on a maternity leave contract for 1.5 days per week so now work 3.5 days a week temporarily, mainly from home and days to suit me. Childcare wise, my children go to the local preschool (830 to 330) on the days I work with a childminder collecting them, feeding them and having them until 6pm. My daughter starts school in September and this arrangement will continue. On my half day they just go to the preschool with me collecting them and us having the afternoon together. We then have all day Friday together too. When they were tiny we had a nanny 3 days a week. It does feel as though life is a juggling act but I love being back at work part time, I wouldn't want full time work but have found 3 days to be a nice balance albeit the days I work I don't do the school pick up - to do so just makes the day too short. Although I could do this I would be catching up of an evening which isn't ideal. -
How many ex-East Dulwichites are still active on the EDF?

Rural and pretty idyllic. Totally different life to ED but no regrets. It's great having the kids grow up with plenty of outside space to run around in, getting to ride in tractors / combined harvesters and being a short drive from the beach. It's @ 70 miles away yet takes just 35 mins on HS1 to get to St Pancreas. I only come into the office a couple of times a month these days but it takes just 10 mins longer door to door which is fantastic. The only part I miss is everything being walking distance. Nothing is walking distance these days but to be honest that's not too inconvenient - other than running out of milk / bread ;) -
Sounds like a great idea to me, hope you find an ideal sharer!

If you could re-train, what would it be in?
ClareC replied to Ole's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I always wanted to be a vet or Dr. Dismissed both on the basis of not being clever enough, too sensitive and squeamish. Ended up doing a law degree instead and becoming a solicitor - I've been working as a solicitor nearly 16 years now but have always thought if only...... I always remember being newly qualified and bumping into a school friend who had just qualified as a Dr, I was in awe, as was she..... She was thinking about going back to Uni to do law! Would love to hear more about these 3/4 years retraining as a Dr courses...... -

I contacted a local animal sanctuary to offer temporary grazing (there have been animals drowning / starving down here due to flooded fields) - they were very grateful and it looks like we may have some evacuees coming soon. No longer in ED (obviously) ;)

We left nearly 2 years ago now. Have met two ex ED residents here (both from this forum) plus a number of "ex" London! No forum here but a few local FB pages - it's not the same as an actively used forum like this but then there is a fraction of the population here compared to ED. Don't frequent these pages nearly as much as before but do still take a peek and make the occasional post :) -
Friends of ours adopted 6mth twins last year. Good luck x

Don't forget your ski boots remove a lot of leg. I'm only 5'3 and even my longest ones (Salomon) are fine once wearing boots.

Ideas please! Birthday day out for a 5 year old
ClareC replied to crystal7's topic in The Family Room Discussion
It's further afield but we went to Druisilas at the weekend, it was really good and both my 4 year old and two year old loved it and had a great time. It's only small but there is lots there including a zoo (you can go into some enclosures), Thomas the tank engine and some great playgrounds! -
Just received a letter saying our deal finishes 1st May - I thought it was September! I will do some googling in a minute it has anyone remortgaged / taken out a mortgagee recently and found a great deal? Are lenders still a nightmare? Last did this 5 years ago at start of credit crunch and it was painful to say the least!!

Where do you buy your clothes (for you, not kids)?
ClareC replied to Pickle's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Another vote for Sally, I had a wardrobe refresh and consultation following baby 2 and then a shopping trip. Well worth the money and made a huge difference. -
Any advice or thoughts on mid sleepers (cabin beds)
ClareC replied to hazelnunhead's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I've been looking at exactly the same for my son. My friend recommended izzy wot not - her daughter has one and they are very happy with it. -
Sell it I suspect.

There is a big difference between new and old. I had a new gas fired Rayburn installed in my house in Hampshire, it cooked, heated water and 16 radiators. Not expensive given it did everything. The kitchen was large so no need to switch off in summer. I loved it. The only negative being two ovens a squeeze when cooking for large numbers. I now have an Aga in my current house. It came with the house and dates to the 30's! It's been converted to run on oil and is far from economical but is lovely!! Food is far nicer cooked in an Aga (and Rayburn) and it makes the kitchen very cosy. I wouldn't have one that isn't on all the time (electric) as you lose that something special of the kitchen being warm etc. We will be replacing ours with a modern version when we do our kitchen, my preference would be gas but that's not an option so we will have a new oil fired one. I will also recommend the 4 oven version or getting the companion. 2 ovens can get crowded! You do need a large kitchen though and handy to have an alternative means of cooking for when it's serviced / if you want to switch off.

What is the chocolate game? Traditional birthday parties are the best :) -
Or a treehouse - there are some really luxurious ones
