  1. the person setting it up really is super keen to make it a success, so let's be positive folks! as someone above says there are plenty of eyesores around the area, superdrug being the newest addition

  3. I've got my sticker but no idea about the brown bags - sounds like they have overly complicated things!

  6. Is anyone interested in meeting up to play chess at the weekends? I'm wondering if we could set this up in a local pub (The Plough?) or perhaps above the library. My 9 year old also loves chess but there doesn't seem to be anything local other than sessions in schools.
  7. I've asked my husband and children to make a donation for Mothers Day instead of buying me flowers or us going out for lunch. Thought I'd share in case anyone has seen the news reports of the poor people suffering in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe floods, and wanted to do something to help... DEC link for donations here:https://www.dec.org.uk/?gclid=CjwKCAjw1dzkBRBWEiwAROVDLFMV_OBYpXkQgI48y0reXyE1XEwckmwA_KqSp_N9GyBv3Ww6X5XyLRoCFNkQAvD_BwE
  8. Also recommending Nimble Arts. Brilliant holiday clubs from age 4 yrs upwards. My sons love it :)
  9. newsagent on Lordship Lane (V7?) particularly rude and unhelpful. I tend to drop near work instead!

I would highly recommend Nimble Arts - it's on the pricey side but well worth it - many of the carers are teachers or have had teaching experience, in contrast to many of the other holiday clubs. They also use good quality materials and their organisation is superb - from passwords at pick up to the activities themselves. They are best in class as far as I am concerned and my boys love going - they are aged 4 and 8. Range of activities from sports to arts & craft and even exotic things like learning about various parts of history (e.g. Tudors - with actors dressing up, plays, just amazingly well done) and even falconry!!!
  11. This is a real shame and will be a big loss to the area. Another business closure, esp unexpected after huge kitchen revamp!
  12. Could not agree more. This truly is an illustration that these type of incidents can happen anywhere. East Dulwich is a lovely area, full of lovely people (and yes not perfect obviously but very multicultural and people generally are happy and friendly round and about, if you need help people would often stop). I have always felt safe, even at night when it's dark, so this is very shocking. rendelharris Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > snoopy17 Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > Andrew castle is right it is a rough area > nothing > > fancy, inbetween Peckham and Camberwell. only > > rich people consider it a posh area, its > nothing > > special to everyone else. > > > ED is nothing like in between Peckham and > Camberwell, they're both north of it. 13. Would expect no less from LBC. Shame we don't have a more balanced London talk radio station. rahrahrah Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > HelBel65 Wrote: > -------------------------------------------------- > ----- > > Terrible news. > > > > I was a bit taken aback to hear Andrew Castle > on > > LBC this morning referring to ED as ?a rough > area? > > where you ?really have to watch yourself? 14. What a complete fool this man sounds. The frightening thing is that these incidents can happen any time, any place, anywhere. Tory police cuts are what need addressing and SOON! I wonder if he would make such ignorant statements if he had known the man. The victim was innocent by all accounts simply refused someone a cigarette and lost his life. Tragic. Full stop. 16. It was my wife that put the post up. I was there and believe you me, I have lived in East Dulwich for about 18yrs. I love this place and its multiculturalism. I would be the last person to cry racism and in fact when my wife first alerted me to the fact that the guy had lied to us about the pub's availability I didn't believe it. I was shocked when I called the pub and was told there WAS availability, in the 2-3 minutes that it took me to call them back using my mobile phone - a table big enough for the exact number of people that I asked had magically become available. I don't wont to continue with this thread and want to draw a close to this matter. When you brush things aside as political correctness gone wrong, it truly shows your naivety. My children were there and that for me made the experience even more painful.
  17. Bumping post as still such a pivotal issue.
  18. ?
  19. I have racked my brain but sadly can't think of any logical explanation. I'll be interested to see what the General Manager says tomorrow after they've had a discussion.
  20. Racism is usually so hidden or subtle, this was very shocking especially in an area which is so mixed. Tragic really.
  21. My friend's son has attended Heber nursery and loved it, loads of fun activities, lots of help with basics in phonics and numbers so he's now well prepared for reception (which will be a different school, as his brother attends another primary school). Best of luck with your decision
  22. Mine are 4 years apart but loved sharing a room from the start. I was worried for same reasons as you but actually they both settled and slept better because they were together on the whole. It's been rare that one has disturbed the other. Good luck, I'm positive they'll be fine!
  23. I have posted a thread in the lounge but so upset I wanted to let other families know about our experience. We went to the Crown & Greyhound at lunchtime today (me, hubby, our sons aged 4 and 8 and their auntie) but my husband (British, Nigerian origin) was advised by the restaurant manager that they were fully booked. I noticed the booking sheet only had two bookings for midday so was surprised but happy to go to Rocca next door as that's one of my favourite places to eat with family. I commented that I didn't think they were fully booked to my husband but he didn't believe me, so we went into Rocca and he stayed outside and called the Crown. He rang to see if they had a table, giving his name as John, and they said yes no problem within twenty minutes. My husband went back and spoke to the General Manager, who did not know what had happened and was very helpful. The restaurant manager said a table had become available but this was obviously a lie as the place was almost empty of diners. The General Manager is ringing me back after promising to look further at what happened. I will update this post after we've spoken tomorrow but for now I wanted to post as this experience was so disgusting, particularly in an area we love partly because it is so multicultural and friendly. All I can say is how shameful of the restaurant manager to be so overtly prejudiced and what a shame.
  24. Unfortunately it is often the case that you have to go to appeal in order for them to see sense. Best wishes and good luc, sounds ridiculous and stressful!
