Moving to east Dulwich - childcare question
Jellybeanz replied to Daithiaseire's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I would ring around local nurseries, not all have as long waiting lists. I would recommend Mother Goose on Upland Road or Little Fingers Montessori on Barry Road. There are also some lovely local childminders, ring Southwark council and they can give you a list. -
This salon is great - very cheap as it is a tiny place - near Bond Street / Oxford Circus https://www.groupon.co.uk/biz/camden-town/ioannas-creative-hair-extentions I tend to do a colour at home and then go to the salon, and alternate like that to save some money!

Walters Taekwondo - please help them rebuild

My sons used to go to Walters classes and I would highly recommend - will consider going back at some point! -
Secondary School admissions 2021

I would agree with Peckham Nicola - put choices in the order you prefer and if you don't get the school you want, put yourself on the waiting list ASAP once decision is made and you stand a good chance of getting a place within that school year, with people moving house or deciding on different state/private schools. I am in the same position but I believe Kingsdale is very good for Maths and Sciences, so would hope their Computer Science provision should also be of a good standard. There are also some very good coding classes locally - Sparks is one. https://www.spark4kids.com/october-2020-online-workshops/ Good luck making the decision!

Hope it's okay to share on this page but I thought I would, as it's nearly at 1 million and could do with more support - government seem to be agreeing that no child should be without food over school holidays but refusing to act and provide vouchers for families in need (in contrast to Wales and Scotland I believe who are offering food vouchers in holidays until spring 2021 at least). https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/554276 Whatever your party politics, hopefully we can all agree that nobody should be going hungry in this country in this day and age and by supporting free school meals in school holidays we are supporting their families also, in a period where many are suffering. I read that London unemployment rates had doubled since the start of the pandemic. Truly shocking and I think many of us are very sheltered and fortunate to have stable jobs, so should be doing what we can whether supporting a petition or giving to a food bank or local charity. Thanks for reading, much appreciated.

Shouting through the night in ED
Jellybeanz replied to first mate's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Voices.. dogs barking... music... different people each time. Ulverscroft seems to be a short cut home for those coming back from the pub generally and also has a few people having get togethers frequently with loud music and people standing on the street yelling/drunk/whatever. -
Emily's Plaice still my favourite - North Cross Road opposite the Actress, close to Crystal Palace Rd. The one near Goose Green playground also very good by all accounts.

Looks very good so far -
Can anyone suggest a good GP practice?
Jellybeanz replied to Nushi's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Despite bad reviews, Tessa Jowell centre (formerly Melbourne Grove practice) is reliable and good, i.e. you can get an appointment on the day if you ring up, new receptionists (not always good or friendly but in my experience that is commonplace anyway). Quality of doctors is excellent in my experience. -
Just got a book posted to me (from West London) on 29 August. Shockingly bad at the moment.

Oskar and team did our garden revamp and did an AMAZING job - part of a low wall cracked (paintwork but looked unsightly) and he came back straight away, replastered (not just repainted) and put it right. Could not recommend more highly, hard to find guys like this.

Most finish because [they are mainly based in schools] the schools do a deep clean and some teachers set up their classrooms just before term restarts...

My sons go to this fantastic holiday club and they still have spaces next week, so thought I'd share - 15% discount :)

My sons (the eldest now 9 has been going since he was just 4) absolutely love this club, so I thought I would give it another mention - quite a few parents I know haven't seemed to know what's on over the summer childcare-wise. Link for more info and booking is www.nimblearts.co.uk It runs from 8am-6.30pm (movie club from 5pm is optional for small extra fee). They have a breakfast bar with snacks, fruit and drinks in case you've had a manic morning or the kids are still peckish when dropped off. There is a different theme daily (and a permanent bouncy castle in situ!). The kids are split by age and the supervision is excellent in my experience - with many having teaching or TA experience. So far in the club my boys have held exotic animals, learned some magic and circus skills, done lots of arts and crafts (from drawing to making clay crocodiles!) and loads of fun games. It's a little more expensive than some others but they use high quality materials and have a lot more supervision from what I have seen (when compared with other clubs, who tend to hire students or people without any close experience working with children and understanding their needs - whatever their age!!). Highly highly recommended, like stepping into a Blue Peter set when I pick them up (oh and they never want to come home - always a good sign :) ).

Silly question perhaps but how much have people been charged for tiling a bathroom? We are being quoted on the basis of square footage of tiles but friends have been charged a daily rate. Advice gratefully appreciated. Thanks

Hi lovely people of East Dulwich. I am posting this as a mum of two, I cannot imagine having to worry about a place to live, food and essentials for a baby - and although my husband lost his job when I was heavily pregnant, thankfully we never struggled for money. I am trying to raise some money for my friend's daughter who is really struggling financially - having always been independent since her late teens, she and her partner are living back at her mum's until they can save for a new place of their own with their baby once she is born (due October). If anyone would kindly make a donation, small or large, I would be eternally grateful smiling smiley I will be giving her some help but obviously I have limits (along with my own young children). EVERY LITTLE WILL HELP so thank you in advance. [www.crowdfunder.co.uk]
