Don't worry I am following procedures and he passed the Kent test so can apply to Kent grammars (St Olaves has a different test as do those in Bexley, you're correct). Thanks

Sounds great! -
ED on North Cross Rd is absolutely my favourite shop for gifts... Also Willow has lovely bits and bobs especially arts and craft stuff and bath bombs :)

Really pitiful service at the moment. That's what you get with privatisation. No doubt the former sorting office on Sylvester Road will be luxury flats in the new year! Meanwhile we barely get any post and when we do it's at random hours of day and night. Apparently Hermes offers a very reasonable service for parcels (from some newsagents) so worth considering should you need to post something and want to avoid the awful post office queue.

Heber Road primary are also selling them apparently :) (funds to the school)

Thanks all, have decided to put 3 grammars and 3 local state schools down and see what happens... He got a high score so we have a chance but letting fate decide now! (won't move until we have an offer as would be pointless as people point out, it's where you live when you apply, albeit they can bend the rules if you can prove you have exchanged contracts or have a 12 month property rental agreement when you apply).

My son has passed the 11 plus so now we need to choose which schools to apply for. Do any locals send their child to a grammar? I'm new to this so considering whether he commutes or we move and would also love personal feedback on any recommended grammar schools in kent or any to avoid. Much appreciated P.S. yes I liked ED charter and Kingsdale so planning to put them on my application form also, as plan B.

Affordable dog walking service - recommended
Jellybeanz posted a topic in The Family Room Discussion
As a mum with kids eager for a pooch, I am thinking of relenting and have found this dog walking service: https://www.walkahound.co.uk/services Looks great and only charges ?20 per day. I know the guy who runs it, as he also does magic birthday parties and events, so thought I would pass on his website details. -
I have friends/family whose children went to Hollydale - good, standard primary... and Edmund Waller, this was quite a few years ago but they liked the community feel, parents had good comms with the teachers etc. As a mum with 2 primary school age boys I wouldn't worry too much to be honest. Check the Ofsted, do the virtual tours. We are very lucky around this area as the primaries are mainly excellent. Good luck!

Thanks to all who signed - you have probably seen the government have now done a very positive u-turn and will offer free school meals during the Christmas holidays. Amazing result! -

Moving to east Dulwich - childcare question
Jellybeanz replied to Daithiaseire's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I would ring around local nurseries, not all have as long waiting lists. I would recommend Mother Goose on Upland Road or Little Fingers Montessori on Barry Road. There are also some lovely local childminders, ring Southwark council and they can give you a list. -
This salon is great - very cheap as it is a tiny place - near Bond Street / Oxford Circus https://www.groupon.co.uk/biz/camden-town/ioannas-creative-hair-extentions I tend to do a colour at home and then go to the salon, and alternate like that to save some money!

My sons used to go to Walters classes and I would highly recommend - will consider going back at some point! -
Secondary School admissions 2021
Jellybeanz replied to whingeo's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I would agree with Peckham Nicola - put choices in the order you prefer and if you don't get the school you want, put yourself on the waiting list ASAP once decision is made and you stand a good chance of getting a place within that school year, with people moving house or deciding on different state/private schools. PeckhamNicola Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > As far as I know go with preferred order as long > as there are realistic schools on your list. > > If you get say your third choice school to begin > with, you remain on the waiting list for your > first and second choice schools and there's still > a chance if getting in right into the first weeks > of the school year beginning. -
I am in the same position but I believe Kingsdale is very good for Maths and Sciences, so would hope their Computer Science provision should also be of a good standard. There are also some very good coding classes locally - Sparks is one. https://www.spark4kids.com/october-2020-online-workshops/ Good luck making the decision!

Hope it's okay to share on this page but I thought I would, as it's nearly at 1 million and could do with more support - government seem to be agreeing that no child should be without food over school holidays but refusing to act and provide vouchers for families in need (in contrast to Wales and Scotland I believe who are offering food vouchers in holidays until spring 2021 at least). https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/554276 Whatever your party politics, hopefully we can all agree that nobody should be going hungry in this country in this day and age and by supporting free school meals in school holidays we are supporting their families also, in a period where many are suffering. I read that London unemployment rates had doubled since the start of the pandemic. Truly shocking and I think many of us are very sheltered and fortunate to have stable jobs, so should be doing what we can whether supporting a petition or giving to a food bank or local charity. Thanks for reading, much appreciated.

Shouting through the night in ED
Jellybeanz replied to first mate's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Voices.. dogs barking... music... different people each time. Ulverscroft seems to be a short cut home for those coming back from the pub generally and also has a few people having get togethers frequently with loud music and people standing on the street yelling/drunk/whatever. -
Emily's Plaice still my favourite - North Cross Road opposite the Actress, close to Crystal Palace Rd. The one near Goose Green playground also very good by all accounts.
