National Travel Survey and cycling policy in London
Nigello replied to Rockets's topic in Roads & Transport
>>>>> BTW, there is plenty of evidence that people travelling by bicycle are much less likely to break the rules. Probably because you're more vulnerable on a bike. I’ve no car, no bike but a decent pair of eyes and a large minority of cyclists do break the rules. No lights, no bells, no stopping at lights/zebras, footpath riding are all very common and I’m not anti-cyclist or pro-car. -
Proposed Development - The Sidings, Railway Rise, SE22
Nigello replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
It’s hard to deny that housing of all kinds is needed, and fast. If people want (not necessarily need) all manner of (non-essential) services then more space has to be given over to a variety of accommodation to help bridge the big gaps and that may mean reducing space between developments, building higher, etc. So, if you’re upset by the planned development then at the very least consider asking yourself whether you and your habits could possibly be contributing to it. -

Please tell them it’s not good enough. I emailed the head of leisure. Also, a man who approached me as I left the building quizzed me about the place. I told him the god and the bad, stressing the unnecessary booking system for swimming, and he told me he may be the new general manager. So, who knows? Maybe it will help bring about a change. Please do email the head of leisure and your councillor. I can’t see them agreeing with such a waste of opportunities to swim when they’re pushing the sport for all line so fervently. Councillor Catherine Rose cabinet member for neighbourhoods, leisure and parks your councillor can be found at WriteToThem. Yeah, which is bad enough, but people also book and then just CBA to turn up. It’s no way to operate a public facility.

You have to book ahead, unfortunately. It’s an unnecessary legacy of the pandemic. I hope they amend this. Some special sessions should be bookable (OAP, disabled, single sex, etc.) but not general or lane swimming.

National Travel Survey and cycling policy in London
Nigello replied to Rockets's topic in Roads & Transport
Agreed. Pedestrians and wheelchair users are far down in terms of provisions, despite the fact we are - cyclists, riders, drivers - all very likely pedestrians or wheelers a lot of the time. Conway’s Special Ponding Pavements and Dropped Kerbs are sadly not unusual around here… -
I can’t find any shop or local council-run place that sells poppies - no supermarket, cafe, doctor’s surgery, library etc., which is puzzling and a bit deflating.

New JAGS Pre-Prep on East Dulwich Grove
Nigello replied to ed_pete's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
At least JAGS uses the portable bollards it has to stop illegal and hazardous parking. Goodrich could do the same but chooses not to (even though the bollards are very likely to have been bought with public money)… -
Road works 7th and 8 th November Barry Road.
Nigello replied to Pugwash's topic in Roads & Transport
I read a sign as saying it’s later (12, 13/11) for the part of the works from Upland to the top/bottom of Goodrich. (It’s good it’s finally getting resurfaced after years of complaining to Southwark.) -
It’s going to be a cafe, serving bubble tea amongst other things.

The council says homeowners and business owners can get their properties cleaned of graffiti for nothing, provided it’s below 2m. I hope councillors let their constituents know about this and/or the council does also. If not, pass it on. 020 7525 2000 - environmental services (The news came to me from another poster here.)

The Chinese takeaway next to Eric’s on Upland Rd has been revamped, or has closed and been taken over by another owner. Seating is being installed outside. A new restaurant, perhaps? Good luck, whatever it will be.

National Travel Survey and cycling policy in London
Nigello replied to Rockets's topic in Roads & Transport
We should encourage safe and conscientious bicycle use, driving likewise. Far too many cyclists don’t have lights and/or cycle on footpaths, ride through red lights, don’t have bells… Far too many drivers refuse to indicate, slow down at zebras, park illegally. To pretend that any one group of road users shouldn’t be criticised because other groups are also bad or worse is irrational. -

I was booked in to TJC by DMC tor a Covid jab today (Sat.) but on arrival was told TJC was not offering this service today and that it was only the Lister Centre doing C jabs. Two other people (one elderly) were in the same boat. I have an email address of the head of the service so will complain. Anyone else experienced this cockup?

Gotten / Good job! / I hear you. / Big-ass XYZ / Ass -
I hope so. Far too many landlords/owners of businesses in and around here pull down the shutters and give no hoots about the ugly frontages they leave for the rest of us to see. Most of Southwark is blighted with this problem - all the shops on Rye Lane and most on Old/New Kent Roads are covered in scrawl.

One of the planters on Derwent near to the main road junction has been moved and damaged. The road is no longer blocked.

Has Southwark council stopped free dog poo bags?
Nigello replied to Soylent Green's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Sheesh! If you can afford a dog you can afford a quid every other week for 40 dog-do bags. Better still, re-use other kinds of bags (like freezer bags, etc.) you have already. -
Muggings by Charter School pupils on East Dulwich Grove
Nigello replied to Adam's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
“It’s not inconceivable” doesn’t mean “it doesn’t need reporting because all of us will have already conceived of it”. Is it so unremarkable and unimportant that children should be mugging other children to the extent that it not be reported on a local forum? -

Nigello replied to Adam's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Why? What’s up with it? Keep it open unless it’s known for a fact it’s a lie. Just because something is unpalatable - kids mugging other kids is definitely that - it doesn’t mean it ought not to be aired.
