  1. Whatever happened to the notion that the garden centre had sold the place for the development of flats? I heard that from a reasonably good source also...
  2. I'm amazed the area around the station hasn't moved on at the same rate as that of the rest of LL. The shop keepers must all have really long leases or something. Does anyone have a good understanding of this? I never see places closing down around there.
  3. Very clever. But undeniably unfortunate for the owner.
  4. I hope the fill the place with quick drying cement. Squatters infuriate me. Leeches of society.
  5. Smoke bombs?
  6. But the 'ever increasing rates' by the landlords is all part of the process I described. Only those companies employing economy of scale to the degree of Starbucks etc will be able to warrant paying those rates in order to remain profitable. Only the local councils will be able to stop the bigger companies from moving in, but that would be illegal.
  7. I'm the 1% that would still take a taxi ;)
  8. The list is endless- myspace facebook facepary friendster bebo hi5 friendsreunited ... ... mobile phone sms email IM Skype RL (if time permits)
  9. Probably because of direct services from places further out, such as Croydon.
  10. Starbucks was a local business once also. I think we all agree we don't want ED to turn into another clone town like Islington, but it's inevitable in the end. Capitalism is a fight of the fittest and the small fish will be shallowed up in time unless they too become as successful as the Starbucks of this day. Economy of scale will mean that only the biggest companies will be able to afford the increase in rent. It's unfortunate, but ED will be the victim of it's own success. Enjoy the independence while it lasts!
  11. Well, the rumours around the East London line coming to ED was the thing that spurred on the gentrification of ED in the first place (in my opinion)! That soon got axed though. Close to SE15 was my choice. Check out places around "The Gardens". 5 mins walk to LL. 8 min walk ED station. 12 min walk Peckham Rye (or 5 mins on a bus). 2 mins walk to the common. 3 mins walk to Tesco express. 2 mins walk of the shops on ED Road.
  12. Damn, better dash. Have to RL for lunch with an Iraqi...
  13. Why do we need this?
  14. Yes, to Peckham!
  15. Why is it that people are happy to use the conglomoerates such as Sainsburys for their shopping and Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation for their banking needs, but complain about drinking coffee at a successful British chain such as Nero!? If you don't like capitalism, then go and live in another country! Are you not all happy about the house price rises and high employment? We'll you have the economy to thank for that - mostly led by the city (aka the Capitalism machine). Hypocrites the lot of ya ;)
  16. There are more trains from Peckham Rye though : 08:07 08:17 08:26 08:38 08:56 08:59 6 in the hour (8am-9am), so I'm still right. Average 10mins apart.
  17. "Minority Reports" style '3D' transportation isn't that far away. GPS systems are in fact already operable in 3 dimensions (although only accurate enough in the encrypted military-mode). Now all we need is anti-grav!
  18. captain - indeed. Mark has kindly provided the necessary evidence above.
  19. Londoners are obsessed with "The Tube". It's just an underground train for Heaven's sake! East Dulwich/Peckham Rye have trains to London Bridge every 10 minutes (Victoria and Blackfriars also from Peckham Rye), so what's the big deal? On an overland train you get air conditioning to boot (on a good number anyway). I can't stand breathing in a dust from the tube. Wasn't there a research study done a year ago or so saying how travelling on the tube for a week is equivalent to smoking a pack of 20 or something!?
  20. I live on the Peckham Rye side of East Dulwich, so have the option of trains to Blackfriars, Victoria or London Bridge. Buses arriving every few minutes take me to the station in 5 minutes. I work in the city and have a 35 minute door-to-door trip every morning. That's the same commute time as when I was living in Chelsea. I guarantee that trains are a whole lot more comfortable that tube trains, especially in the summer!
  21. Will second that. One of my favorites.
  22. Quick - buy your next property now. Expect Foxtons' overnight 10% inflation!
