Stay and Play sessions for toddlers?
zork replied to betsyrainbow's topic in The Family Room Discussion
There is a free music group for pre school children up to 4 years at Goose Green Primary school on Wednesday mornings (term time). It’s lovely & their music teacher is brilliant. See attached poster & link https://www.happity.co.uk/schedules/goose-green-primary-school-east-dulwich-goose-green-primary-school-stories-songs-and-rhymes-wednesdays-09-00-09-40 -

Experienced Carer wanted for 3 days a week. Hours flexible, but roughly 9am - 5pm. Crystal Palace Road. My family are looking for someone to help us with my elderly father’s care. He requires full time care and has a vision impairment. He lives with my mother who is well and independent and currently his full time carer. We’re looking for a carer who will help him throughout the day with personal care, keep him company, get him outside for a walk, help him with a simple breakfast & lunch and overall ensure he is safe in order to allow my mother some more freedom and oeace of mind when she’s out for the day. We’d like someone local, who is fairly flexible, and we are happy to pay the going day rate. Starting ASAP. Please DM if you’re interested. We’d like to hear from you. Many Thanks

Considering moving to Dulwich and need some advice
zork replied to Yz871's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
As someone who grew up in Hammersmith have now lived in East Dulwich for 12 years, commuting all over town for work, I can tell you how much easier and more pleasant I find taking the trains, and buses than the tubes. And if you work in the city, how much more accessible it’ll feel from here. All the areas mentioned are great places to bring up children, we are so happy we have done so with ours. Though I would say Blackheath won’t be as convenient if your reason for moving is mainly to be near your mother. Good luck. I’m sure you and your family will be very happy here. -
Our daughter is at Goose Green. She is thriving and so very happy there and has been for 5 years now. We love the sense of community and personal feel of the school thanks to the wonderful long standing and passionate staff. No forest school but there are so many other plus points. For us, a big factor is that its 2 form entry rather than 3, and the focus on music & arts.

There?s a gate on Greendale cycle path - As it goes north, as it Starts to go uphill. Or you can find a smaller opening on the football ground side, the south eastern corner of the astroturf. You can also access it via the small wood behind Sainsburys. My family have used the wild space and astroturf consistently for 10 years. My daughter learned to ride a bike here, hit a tennis ball, rollerskate etc. Football, a good run around and endless family hide and seek in the wild areas, not to mention blackberry picking every summer. We always run into friends there and end up having a catch up. We?ll be sad to see it go, so many fond memories

Here is the link: https://e-activist.com/page/78581/data/1?ea.tracking.id=c9beaa6f My father is an ED local, elderly & visually impaired so I?ve seen, first hand, how street furniture and clutter impacts those with disabilities on even the simplest of walks/errands... Whilst I fully support the hospitality business after such a difficult year, raising some awareness of the impact on those with disabilities is also important, hopefully there can be some work done together to reduce the impact. Also, this seems a good place to mention that for the visually impaired, social distancing/2m rule can be hard to judge, so please be patient & understanding especially as it?s not always obvious that some people have any disability.

Completely agree - really impressed with the home learning provision, communication & support. So thankful to all the staff at Goose Green, you are doing an incredible job!

So many flies tonight we had to move our al fresco dinner indoorsco Been here 10 years, never happened before, noticed increase in flies pre-heatwave too!

Pretty surprised about this - what happened to the no new fast food outlets within 400m of schools initiative? https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/total-ban-on-fastfood-outlets-within-400m-of-london-schools-a3702376.html I'm pretty confident Charter ED and Dog Kennel Hill Primary are well within 400m...

Just echoing what the other parents above have said really. I have a daughter in Yr 2. She loves Goose Green and so do we. Ever since she started in Reception she's been happy and is thriving. The teachers and all the staff are warm and passionate and care greatly about the pupils and school community. It's a smaller school, just 2 form entry, and we really like the more personal & creative feel of it. We feel really lucky to be part of such a lovely school and the community that comes with it. Wrap around care is also excellent with brilliant and caring staff. Please do feel free to PM if you have any questions. Best Wishes

Goose Green Primary School is Good (and improving)
zork replied to GG governors's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Such brilliant news. Such a wonderful school, we love being part of it and we?re so pleased you?re getting the results you deserve! -
Live very nearby Sainsburys DKH so have found myself in there several times a week over the past 6 or so years and I definitely think it?s gone down hill, particularly in the past 2 months. I haven?t a bad word to say about the staff. I?ve always found them to be very friendly, helpful & pleasant. But the shelves are half empty! At the moment, it seems like the vegetable aisles are always half empty. I know it?s ?Veganuary? or whatever but good management/buying should have taken that into consideration. Moreover - I?ve been noticing a rotten stench round said Aisles and today noticed, in a couple of the very empty crates, a few inches of liquid that is best decribed as similar to ?bin juice? and the smell too. Staff were totally oblivious as they cleared the units of empty crates... Shame because I?m loving the smart shop scanning and used to find everything I needed. Hope it?s just a blip!

HELP PLEASE ... Herne Hill School (v The Villa)
zork replied to TRed's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Have you been to visit all of the local state primary schools? We are spoilt for choice with primary schools in East Dulwich, (most meeting or exceeding national standards) and with a dip in the birth rates coinciding with the addition of some new primaries, the past few years has sadly seen some local primaries being undersubscribed, so you may stand a chance even if you're not in the usual 'catchment'? And as Soylent Green mentions, you might be surprised. Most open days are over now, but i'm sure if you wanted a tour most Heads would welcome you. Speaking from a lot of experience - a convenient school run is not to be underestimated when it's being done 10 times a week, in the winter months, especially if you have to be somewhere yourselves before/afterwards... Also something to consider, is where your child's friend's will live. School becomes a huge part of your life and personally, we've loved that most of our children's friends live only minutes away from of us, and some on our street! Our children feel a real sense of community, as do we. Best wishes, and like all parenting steps.. follow your instincts! : ) -
Brick House Bread announced they aren't reopening
zork replied to Azalea's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Such a shame about Brickhouse. Will really miss their Peckham Rye as well as the cafe. Paul Rhodes in Greenwich make beautiful artisanal bread which they sell in their own shop as well as supplying to many high end restaurants and catering business I believe... I wonder if they could make an outlet in ED work? There's definitely an appetite for it (pun not intended...) Will get to Franklins to try some Snapery Bread - always heard good things about it -
Youngest in school year? Heber/Goodrich school
zork replied to theboycj's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Our daughter is now 5, but her birthday is 29th August - so right up to the line! We toyed with the idea of holding her back but in the end we didn?t, and she is very happy and settled at Goose Green Prinary now, which we all love. Reception at GG worked really well for her thanks to the gentle start to each morning (parents are invited into the classroom each morning to help settle their child and can stay for 20 mins reading books etc) and the reception teachers & TAs are just so lovely, kind & patient. I really think it depends on the child and their character, they are all so different and you as his parents will know your child best and what call to make - but I totally relate to your situation... it is a tricky decision to make! What helped us come to to the decision to not hold back a year was imagining our daughter in nursery/childcare for another year, at almost 5. We felt she?d likely be ?bored/tired? of nursery if she was there another whole year (she was at nursery from 18months). Also, once we started looking at schools and understanding just how play based and similar to nursery reception is, we felt more secure about her being so young. As I said, it?s so variable depending on the child and you know your child best. But just wanted to share our experience incase it?s helpful! All the best! -
2019 Reception Starters - Advice and Support
zork replied to Lolamaxx's topic in The Family Room Discussion
My daughter goes to Goose Green and we live in East Dulwich. She?s in Year 1 and she is very happy and thriving. We love the school & so does she. Reception was fantastic, loveliest teachers & T.As, and she?s now loving Yr 1. We almost didnt go to an open day at Goose Green but at the last minute we did and I can?t tell you how glad I am that we did. We new instantly it was the school for us. Warm, diverse, mukti cultural, passionate, creative, friendly, a great size (only 2 form entry) and a real sense of community. We love that we can?t pop to the shop without running into a new friend, and a 5 minute school run is a big bonus, especially when you are doing it 10 times a week, and in the depths of winter! You must go with your gut when choosing schools, but do see them all, and try to get opinions of parents with children AT the schools, rather than those without. We almost missed out on our lovely school based on that..! All the best in your application : ) -
Views on Bessemer Grange / Lyndhurst / St Johns
zork replied to beachhousegirl's topic in The Family Room Discussion
We must live pretty close as were in a very similar situation at this time last year! We loved Lyndhurst for similar reasons but knew it was very unlikely being just on the edge of the catchment. We also liked Bessemer for similar reasons as you and had the same concerns about size, nevertheless is was our number 1 from beginning of viewings til January... until we went to the last open day of Goose Green. At that point who would fill the heads position was still very much in the air, Ofsted etc was a consideration and much discussed by all many fellow parents (namely those without children at the school FYI!) but we loved the school & we decided it felt right for us. Being at the heart of our community, the lovely teachers who had been there for many years, the smaller entry (only 2 form) and many other factors meant we felt it was the right choice for us and now in our second term I can?t tell you how pleased we are that we made that decision. Our daughter is very happy and so are we to be a part of such a lovely school at the heart of our community. And the new head is great! Whatever you decide, hope you get your first choice! All the best -
