  1. I was under the impression that all routers supplied by the major suppliers had ethernet ports. I work from home and plug my Mac into my Sky hub with an Ethernet cable. This offers me the best connectivity in the house, although as we aren't on superfast cable the performance is only serviceable. Our Sky hub is also pretty poor when it comes to supplying WiFi to the whole maisonette. Some wireless routers seem better at this than others. For instance the BT hub that the guys upstairs have seems better as they have let us connect in the past when ours has gone down. I'd suggest that on the whole though using Wifi once you get more than a room away from the hub is always likely to be pretty flakey. As a result we ended up buying some Powerline adaptors. These have worked well, although we could do with an extra set to extend the signal even further. Anyway, as others have said, you need to work out whether it's a broadband or WiFi signal issue and for that you really need at least one device wired in.
  2. Very jealous about the Osprey. I've seen a few Buzzard and a single Red Kite but no Osprey as yet.

I really like the bee and I think the one you've linked is awful. Not a big fan of the numerous stick men and I really don't like the 'new age' type stuff down by the Herne Tavern, but as they're not directly opposite my livingroom window or on the side of my house I'm not really bothered.
  4. The issue isn't dog, child or bike, it's lack of respect for other people. Unfortunately in some people this is taken to such extremes that they feel anything they disagree with entitles them to become abusive or violent. I'm sorry to hear this happened and feel very much for the original poster and her boyfriend. Whatever the victim may or may not have said (within reason) there was no excuse for the attackers to use violence. I was in the park with two of my children from 9:30 until around 13:30. While on that path my daughter mentioned a fight but I didn't see anything and thought she was talking about two dogs, maybe she was as this was about an hour earlier. I hope you both recover from the shock and that these idiots are caught and charged. DJKQ, unfortunately threads like this will always get hijacked when they touch on a subject people feel passionate about. Some problems involving dogs, children, frisbees or whatever are down to absentmindedness or wandering attention. Sometimes these things can be avoided while at others it's just modern life. However, as I said earlier the biggest issue is the inability of some park users to respect others. Some people want to live life their way and ignore the fact that this can impact on others. Whether you use the park to run, cycle, play football, fly a kite, birdwatch, play with the kids or walk the dog, it's up to you to respect that there are others doing something else. I was in the park today. I spoke to a nice polite lady about her dog being off the lead in an area where signs say that dogs should be on a short lead. Despite the signs she felt there was no good reason for her to do so at this time of the year. Like I said, she was polite, I hope I was, but by ignoring the signs she was exhibiting that same lack of respect. If calm, polite people feel they can ignore the rules, what hope is there?
  5. Hi As well as asking opinions on here I would make sure that you check the Ofsted reports and recent GCSE results for each school. Some of the info on here is a little mis-leading (not saying that's intentional). For example two years ago Kingsdale's results were much better than Forest Hill Boys, last years on the other hand were much worse. Whether this has anything to do with the allegations/investigation is not something I'm prithee to. For the record my eldest is now in his second year at Forest Hill boys. It wasn't my first choice as I'd have preferred a mixed school, but our impressions, on the whole, have been incredibly favourable. My son is glad that he went and enjoys it immensely. None of us know, or have heard of, any bullying which is not to say it doesn't go on. I can't imagine that there is one school in the area that is completely free of it. I think Forest Hill's speciality in performing arts really allows boys to express themselves without the fear of bullying. If your kids have an interest in Dance, Drama, Music and Art I'd say it's the perfect local school, while still being strong academically.
  6. All of our children have gone to Goodrich and we are very happy with it. Our oldest has now left and our other two are in years one and six. While there are undoubtedly issues, this is true of any school. Most of the teachers are very good and the atmosphere at the school is very friendly. The new head is working hard to improve the school and the quality of teaching, and we've found him open and friendly when we've needed to speak with him. We'd say Goodrich is a great choice of primary school and we'd thoroughly recommend it.
  7. Hi Chichirara I have heard of them occasionally being spotted in the area but I don't believe they're living in the woods. I don't think they'd get on with all the dogs to be honest. I believe some of these species use the railway lines as corridors into our cities from more rural areas.
  8. Quite right mate. As I said in an earlier post its about respect for other park users. Having just started running you have nothing to fear from me. I'm not fast or fit enough!
  9. I don't necessarily want dogs on leads the whole time but I do think those owners who know their dogs may be acting dangerously by chasing squirrels like butters should put them back on. Those dogs are not under control. Unfortunately from my experience there are as many out of control dogs in Dulwich park than those under control.
  10. In the spirit of the OP I once saw Nicholas Gleaves in Barry's Food Stores. He used to be in Playing The Field and is now in Scott & Bailey. I've also seen Brenda Blethyn in the chemist. No she wasn't buying anything embarrassing and neither was I.

How many times do people > have to keep going on about the same subjects? It's obviously something which a lot of people feels strongly about, on all sides. There will always be new members commenting on things that those of you who have been members for longer will feel have been done to death. I am a member of many different forums and I always try to adhere to the rule that if I don't want to keep going over old ground I'll give those threads a wide berth.
  12. Personally I wouldn't own a dog living in a city or large town. Probably more the idea of picking up poop which puts off than anything else but also down to whether I'd be able to give it enough exercise. If I lived in the country I'd probably have one if I could afford it. I guess where I'm coming from is we all need to look at how our actions in the park effect others and have more respect for each other. As someone else said bikes can also be a huge problem, especially those banana bikes that are hired out. I stopped taking my kids to Dulwich park when they were small in fear that one would be knocked down by a kid on a bike coming flying out of the bushes. This includes some dog owners that are oblivious to the damage that otherwise docile pets could cause. I'm not having a pop at anyone here. I think the park management could be more proactive in this but it would be hard to police. Maybe if dogs were only allowed off leads on the main playing field area where there is less likelihood of them hurting someone. Maybe it's putting in more dog free areas.

  14. My first proper post on the forum but this is an area I feel strongly about. I actually like dogs and have nothing against their owners on the whole. However I do feel that as with anyone that has a passion about something it can be easy to get the blinkers on when sticking up for what you believe. As someone else has said, there are certain areas of the park in which dogs are supposed to be kept on a lead and this is regularly flouted. Whether this is enforceable by law is one point but surely out of respect for other park users this is something that should be adhered to? I recently met the Park safety officer and he told me that he had approached several dog walkers flouting these rules over the course of a week. Many dog walkers gave him short shrift and ignored his pleas. In fact he said that often it would be the same people on consecutive days. He also said that his actions had caused more complaints to the office than the park management could remember to some time. I use the park for both jogging and birdwatching. When jogging I keep to the bridle way around the main road. I have almost been knocked over by medium to large dogs on three occasions, once last week while jogging and twice in the early spring while birdwatching. Having a dog off the lead is fine in the correct areas, if you can be sure it is controllable. Unfortunately many I see are sent into some sort of frenzy chasing squirrels with owners seemingly oblivious to how madly they are running around. One dog slammed into my legs so hard I nearly went over. I'd stopped and was aware it was coming, otherwise I would have done. Had it been my five year old daughter it hit I hate to think what the outcome would have been. It is only a matter of time before someone is seriously hurt by one of these dogs.
