Hello, I am Polish and my husband's Japanese and we are expecting our 1st at the end of Feb. I would really like to get in touch with Polish and Japanese parents with young children, as it is an absolute imperative that our baby learns both our mother tongues. Anybody out there who needs a peer for their kids? Mags

Hi Greeners, Thank you so much for all the info. I'll check the classes and depending on how much toll commute takes, we might meet one Saturday. As for colds and no medicine: elderberry syrup! You could get Sambucol, but I'm not keen on additives in it (only 1 though) and make my own. 1 cup dry elderberries (I found that NYR sell them, or buy on-line) 3 cups water bring to the boil and simmer for 30min. strain through sieve or cheese cloth cool down a bit and add 1/2 to 1 cup honey (raw if you want extra benefit) take 2 tbs a day (you can dilute in a glass of water or 1 spoon hourly when ill. It'll keep in the fridge for upto 3 months. You can also try onion and garlic (stinks to high heaven, but helps). chop 1 large onion and and 2-6 cloves of garlic add 4 tbs of hot water and sugar to cover leave to macerate for 3-4 days at room temperature. once the thick, oily syrup is formed you can add some liquid honey Take 1 spoonfull 2-3 times a day (cauation, it does taste dicgusting. No need to refrigerate as you should use it up before it goes off.

Hello, I am new to the forum and the area (moved in May). I am due with my first in Feb 2013 (home birth hopefully). Can I join the thread? I am absolutely stuck for information. Any good yoga classes in the area that run in the evenings? Workshops for parents (not nct, please) that are especially father friendly? As for the flu jabs, I would think twice about it. I have consulted my MW, GP, obstetician back home and made my husband call all to Japan to ask his doctor as well. The answers were: 1 for and 3 against. That really scared me off. The main reason given was that vaccines usually contain mercury.

This is a great post! I was wondcring if anybody knows how the triligual situation can be handled though? My husband's Japanese and I'm Polish. We communicate in English, but I really want our kid (due in Feb) to speak all three languages. Obviously one parent, one language approach will work for as long as there is no need for all 3 of us to talk together. What then? Any tips on this front?

Thank you, I'm currently trying to get through the posts there, quite a lengthy process :) -
I agree that they are great, I have a couple myself however...... they are not entirely eco. They are made of poliester, which is petrochemical derived and does not biodegrade. Unfortunately, I have not found any recylcing option for them (maybe e-cloth will look into that some time in the future). Until then e-cloths are just a delay in adding to the landfill.

I mix soda with water to make a thick paste for scrubbing. I use vinegar for lime scale removal. I pour soda down the drains and follow with vinegar to fizz out any possible build up. Vinegar is great for cleaning toilets. I use castile soap mixed with soda for general cleaning. Coconut soap is the most foaming possible (it even foams in salt water). As for dishwasher, I haven't got one, so no experience here. However, I read a coupe of reviews of soap nuts powder and soda mix used as dishwasher detergent. Followed by vinegar in the rinse cycle.

Hello, I'm new to the area and due 28th Feb. I'd like to get in touch with other mums to be, mainly because I really need some support chain to gain some info on what's available. We're registered with KCH and planning a home birth. I'm not very keen on NCT classes (having read several reviews), especially that I was my friend's birthing partner 3 years ago and have already read and watched everything there is. I'm also good with my own pain management (crippling period pains teach you a lot on that I believe). I'd like a class that would focus on a role of a partner in childbirth and early days and breastfeeding. Mainly so that my husband can learn what it really is about as, unlike me, he hasn't been around newborns much. Can anybody recommend something in the area, that does not break the bank?

I'm sorry, but the soap dish recipe is rubbish. If you mix soda and vinegar they react releasing CO2 and what you're left with is water and salt. I use castile soap, vinegar and soda for cleaning, but given that London is a hard water area, you do have to go and fork out some cash on a coconut derived dish and laundry soap. Sorry, but that's just pure facts.
