  1. Good on Picturehouse workers for successfully getting a pay rise. But more widely, there are risks of LLW campaign. The minimum wage is set by the Low Pay Commission, they set the increases at the highest possible level that won't have an impact on jobs. There's currently lots of pressure in Westminster to get them to push up the increases. Personally I think there are big risks in politicians/pressure groups/general do gooders interfering in the work of an independent body that are experts in this area. There is an argument that London can afford a higher minimum wage than other parts of the country. But how would you feel if you were a cleaner in Birmingham being told than actually, your work isn't worth the same as if you were a cleaner in London? Plus it could lead to an even bigger pull to London compared to other parts of the UK which, in my view, is bad news.
  2. Toasted and The French Cafe also dog friendly (in the day at least, maybe not in evenings which seems fair enough)
  3. I can totally sympathise with you, after spending the best part of a year trying to get Southwark to take down a raised flower bed that was causing damp to my property (which is a problem for them too as a freeholder.) Best advice would be to try and speak to different people until you hit someone who is actually competent and happy to help you (which is what finally happened with me.)
  4. Lillyrose - I loved the sweet shop but very happy that another small independent is opening in its place - much better than the place being empty. Best of luck.
  5. Depending on where you live in East Dulwich, the 12 also runs all night (good service) and Parliament Square from Victoria is a 15 min walk or easy bus ride.
  6. I grew up in Teddington and always used Middlesex as part of my postal address... only recently realised that it didn't exist!
  7. If you are desperate to stay in the area because you have family here there are actually plenty of affordable options just outside but still nearby East Dulwich, particularly if you go ex-council...
  8. I've moved a lot around London and James Barber is the first local councillor I have ever been able to name. That's got to be a good reflection on him.

I am sure your "fellow workers" would be delighted at the idea someone else in the carriage is pitying them and their sorry lives...
  10. Why don't you just take it to the tip? That's what we did when we got fed up of waiting for the estate agent to take it down http://www.southwark.gov.uk/a_to_z/service/353/rubbish_tip
  11. Luton is also quite easy. If you time it right you can get direct trains to Luton Airport Parkway from Peckham Rye. If they're not running, bus to Elephant and Castle and then a train from there.
  12. Putting aside the rights & wrongs of the free school/academy debate - Harris schools have a great track record, many rated Outstanding in tough areas. That's got to be a good thing (unless you're so wealthy you can afford to go private, and care more about an intellectual debate rather than the quality of education local kids receive.)

    The Patch

If the number of people who claim they read the Guardian actually did read it, the circulation figures wouldn't be what they are. *ahem*
  14. This may be no use to you, but if you have a iphone there is a very good app called Live Bus Times which you can use at any bus stop. I agree it would be better to keep the count down screens up
  15. Lots of shops with great service but would particularly recommend the DIY shop opposite East Dulwich station, ToastED, Rye Books and the new jewellery shop Zara Taylor on Northcross Road.
  16. I get the bus every day & always use my contactless card. On a couple of occasions it hasn't worked - and not because I didn't have ?? in my account before you ask, because of some unknown error. That's why I think it's really important people can still pay by cash
  17. Gone Girl - won't win the Booker Prize, but a great page-turner
  18. If you've only asked him once, why don't you ask him again before getting the council involved?
  19. I drove in this morning and Walworth Road seemed fine for cars too.
  20. This happened to me too. I didn't get the letter because I had recently moved into my property, but let them in & then kicked myself - but checked with Thames Water and found out they were legit.
  21. I think it's great that James Barber highlights what's going on in the area so people can make their views known. Personally I'm pro a Co-Op opening 24/7 - I work shifts so would be very handy being able to grab some food on the way home!
  22. Always worth contesting. I once won an appeal just because the parking attendent hadn't taken down the right info/pictures
  23. Thanks SouthEast There is also an entrance on Darrell Road which is even quieter than Crystal Palace Road
  24. People may call me a nimby, but I am very concerned about the proposal I live opposite where the pharmacy would be I'm a young woman and because I work shifts I'm often walking along the road at night around 10pm in the dark - a needle exchange (which is part of the proposals) worries me I understand people need these facilities, but of it was offered at a pharmacy on a main road which is well lit, that strikes me as being very different from a quiet residential street, when of you are walking home in the evening nobody else is around.
  25. Both A&E and maternity services downgraded - maternity services to midwife led centres, A&E will be running at 75% what it was previously. Lewisham loses A and E cover for any patient with life-threatening conditions. And women with a high risk pregnancy will have to go elsewhere.
