I don't think you need to shower at work when cycling. I shower before I set off. Bit moist when I arrive at work. But a quick toot of Febreeze and I'm fresh as a daisy. The overground from Honor Oak Park or Forest Hill is good. Packed, but you can get on; including at peak time (c8am). Then off at London Bridge or Canada water for the tube if you need to get central. I get off at Southwark and walk over Blackfriars.

Edwards are great at this time of year as they're clearing post-Xmas stock. They always do me a good deal on a new bike (eg chucking decent tyres and pedals on). Agree Rat Race is excellent for servicing

It's like the worst Blair Witch sequel ever. And that's saying something. -

Well a glade is defined as a clearing in a forest. Or a brand name for something that masks the smell of crap. So I suppose SSW take inspiration from the latter. -

There are two VC graves in the cemetery. In the wooded area lies William Stanlake, who got his VC at Inkerman during the Crimean War. His old regiment association (the Coldstream Guards?) put a stone up recently and created a clearing, so you can easily access it. The other is Albert Mackenzie (WW1) whose grave forms part of a private plot, near to but not part of the main war grave site and memorial (at the north eastern edge where COC abuts Forest Hill Road). I think he is buried in his mother's plot. So his stone is just in front of hers. Mackenzie survived the war (as did Stanlake). But he died of influenza in 1918. They erected a statue to him in Bermondsey a few years ago. -

The Daily Telegraph no less. The WW1 graves angle is pure bull. The most cynical thing they've done yet. -

SSW's latest angle on this is a wilful and disingenuous misreading of Petchey's judgement. Quite staggering really. And utterly disreputable. A link to the full judgement is here: http://www.savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk/download/i/mark_dl/u/4013025308/4631603353/Petchey%20Consistory%20Court%20Ruling%20Camberwell%20Cemeteries.pdf Worth reading as an insightful, balanced and thoughtful analysis of the issues. Para 45 deals with the war graves issue. Key quote - "CWGC do not object to the proposals and evidently see them as an opportunity to provide additional commemoration of the war dead." I would absolutely trust the CGWC on this matter. They are a brilliant organisation. Paras 49-54 deal with the tree issue. Pretty damning of SSW. -

So Blanche, presumably representatives of Southwark's orthodox Jewish and Muslim communities are up in arms about this? Have they made representations? I saw the (somewhat hyperbolic and offensive) quote on your website - "This is London in 2017 with a Muslim Mayor, not Selma, Alabama in 1965." - but I couldn't see any evidence there had been objections from representatives of these communities. -

Ditto Siduhe. I engaged with the group over a year ago and quickly disengaged because they were clearly not going to brook any notion of discussion or compromise with the council or other interested parties. The religious discrimination idea is purely tactical and disinegenous. -

Oh boy, what a state this campaign has descended into. It is a study in how not to run a public campaign. To alienate so many people takes a special talent. -
There are a couple in Warwick Gardens, Peckham (just off Bellenden Road)

Southwark Plans for Camberwell Old & New Cemeteries.
taper replied to Penguin68's topic in The Lounge
I'm in the cemetery two or three days a week. Walking through mainly, sometimes with my dog in the wooded area in the north-east corner and the field that backs onto Ryedale. Two things strike me. First, the wooded area and field is worth preserving and managing pretty much as it is. It would be a real shame to see it levelled and re-used to any significant extent. Second, the cemetery is a working cemetery, to the benefit of the people of Southwark. Funerals are held in there all the time. And at the weekend there are always individuals and families visiting graves of loved-ones. This is genuinely moving and clearly important to local people. So it would be hugely remiss of Southwark not to look at how to extend the active life of this cemetery, balanced with the need to preserve the best of the old. I believe this is the position of the other friends group, which Lewis and co seemed to have usurped (Camberwell Cemeteries Working Group). We should support them. -

Hell of a game. Great to see so much pink and blue around East Dulwich beforehand and afterwards

They're moving to Lordship Lane.

None of the above. Just tired of cynicism. The community will benefit from a more vibrant and successful high street. Small projects such as this can help. If not, ?21k is peanuts. Good luck to those who have got off their backsides to put the proposal forward. And no, I don't want to help out. I can't stand shopping.

"..most of the people of this forum aka this community.." Now that's stretching it a country mile. I for one look forward to seeing Lordship Lane made more attractive. And if local businesses benefit, then that's a good use of public funds. Local regeneration and economic development is part of Southwark's remit. They're not just about bins and potholes you know.

Of the ones I saw, the record for a standoff was about 40 minutes. Those of us who lived either side learnt to enjoy them as spectator sport.

I lived on Lyndhurst Grove for a decade or so. It is a well known rat run that can take you from Camberwell through to Nunhead,Deptford and beyond a lot more quickly than if you stick to the A roads. That said, it didn't bother me much, other than when Camberwell Grove was shut and occasionally when driver stand-offs happened at the east end of the road, where the road narrows. The school run to The Villa was sometimes a problem when parents parked idiotically. If you introduced a no-right-turn rule at the junction with Lyndhurst Way, that would reduce a lot of traffic down the road and into Bellenden. But it would need to be thought through as part of a wider plan. It's a terrific street though. I loved my time there and made a lot of friends.

Peckham Vision do seem deeply reactionary at times. I can't recall the last housing development they supported. But I do think they have a point here. 20 stories is out of proportion to the rest of the area. Other than some of the horrific housing blocks that went up in the sixties. The Aylesham is a dump. So development is welcome. But keep the height down and the views across Peckham as they are.
