    The Plough Pub

The Crown and Greyhound offer a wide range of bitters and ales, and they also have a reasonable selection of bottled continental lagers. Not so sure about the Harvester, they have little of anything behind the bar there.
  2. Tessa Jowell isnt so bad, not as bad as the Peckham and Camberwell mp Harriet "deputy leader of the Labour Party" Harman. I saw Tessa at the last election wandering down CPR.
  3. Lorraine Chase was discovered in the Jennys cafe near Peckham Rye station, and she attended the girls school in Peckham, which is now called the Peckham Academy.

    The Plough Pub

Interesting to note, just had a read of 'Mitchell and Butlers' website... I was not aware that The Harvester chain, The Crown and Greyhound in the village, and Alleyns Head in West Dulwich are all owned by Mitchell and Butlers. I am now disappointed, because non of the above rock my boat. Castle brand or no castle brand.

My dream makeover would be to the Grove Tavern. If that was restored and the Harvester removed, i'd be more than pleased to go in their for my half guinness every night.. It is such a wonderful place... Someone out there save it for me! I'll marry you!

    The Plough Pub

The pub companies and breweries define 'class'... If a place goes through a refurb with a lick of paint and a new food menu, it seems to change the clientel and usually, though not always, this involves a certain class of person leaving eg older male working class smokers who like a pint, replaced by younger wealthier foody types... This usually involves a class stereotype I am afraid.

    The Plough Pub

Dont get me wrong DPF, the Plough was not a pub I would have gone into in recent years, it was bloody awful over the last 10 years. The Just So Pub Co ripped the old interior out and with it went the heart of the pub, and had the cheek to call it the Goose and Granite. I like the changes, and the fact the original name is being kept.. It's all fantastic.. I shall visit it, and I hope they keep a good choice of traditional ales and stouts as well as fancy continental lagers! I wouldnt say the Magdela was working class, and I was refering to the castle not the plough... I guess the CPT is a less pretentious crowd than most locals.

I guess the wannabe gangsta crowd will be relegated to the castle. It's going to be packed pretty soon, its the only working class public house remaining.

I took the above picture so I can vouch for the lane being slightly wider the people being somewhat smaller :)

Praise where praise is due! It obviously lacks the older entrance at the front which can be seen below, which is such a shame. I would also have liked to see the old style lantern hung from above the main entrance. http://www.ideal-homes.org.uk/images/southwark/dulwich/lordship-lane-01620-750.jpg
  11. Peckham Rye park was orignally called Homestall Farm, and this name survives in a local road name. Below is a picture of the farm before it was sadly destroyed in 1908. This was the last farm in Southwark to survive the onslaught of the mighty London suburbs in the second half of the 19th century. What remain of the ruins (very little now sadly), are situated in a group of trees located near the "japanese gardens" close to the centre of the park. http://www.ideal-homes.org.uk/images/southwark/peckham/homestall-farm-00271-640.jpg

    The Plough Pub

I walked past the Plough on my way back from my friend's this morning and was highly impressed by the interior. It has a contemporary edge but is primarily quite traditional. I give it my seal of approval.
  13. The 60 odd people killed queuing outside the co-op was one of the most striking and chilling events in the history of ED. Innocent shoppers struck down by an invisible enemy. I agree with you magroban, the majority of shops were out at the plough end of the lane, not the goose green end.

Jah, it was over two years ago that a lot of things happened, including Tony Blair taking this country war, but it doesnt mean he cant be taken to task over it does it? :)
  15. There is a boutique clothing shop along that stretch of shops, the green bistro cafe place on the other corner and a newsagents.. Oh and lets not forget the picture shop, chinese restaurant and cafe :)
  16. moz i've been placed on the naughty step today and it isnt nice, so heed the warning, i've had slightly past the sell by date organic pheasant meat and rotten organic duck eggs chucked at me since about midday lol :)
  17. I know it's not the best pub in the world, but I would recommend the Crown and Greyhound in Dulwich Village for a large event, easy to find location, and somewher with a big garden which caters for all... You can hire the back rooms during summer I believe leading into the gardens. :)
  18. Keef do you know an older guy called Tony, I believe he was a tax inspector, regular at the CPT going back to the 80s/90s period.. shortish guy with thick glasses? :)
  19. And people say I stir up the gravy ;-)

Keef - I just know them too well, there is no way they would let someone down like that.. But as I said to susyp, I will take them to task on it next time I venture into the place. :)

  22. Sydneham Sainsbury's was a SaverCentre at one point, but is now just a very large standard store. It sells electrical, large dvd and music section, cooking items, a very large frozen food section.
  23. Edwardes Brothers is not lost either, it is now located in West Dulwich.
  24. Love is in the air...
  25. Keef, apparantly everyone from a working class background who shops in Iceland and prefers Britannia chippy is some sort of benefits claimer. Now you can see why I get my back up so often.
